2 Why come to Inside Out Leadership The capacity to be a recognized, flexible, and authentic leader with vision has never been more in demand. Different personality characteristics can have a positive or negative impact on our ability to lead and to exercise authority. As managers we can develop our leadership effectiveness by becoming more aware of these characteristics, as well as of the expectations of others on us to exercise authority. This will impact on our capacity to lead others. This unique residential experiential workshop provides a protected environment within which the role of leader can be understood better and the capacity to lead more successfully can be developed further. The workshop takes into account research based on how we learn most effectively. This research shows that most learning comes from experience, augmented by conceptual inputs and mentoring from others, particularly from a superior. This leadership workshop incorporates systemic understanding derived from The Tavistock Institute for its framework, which provides an alternative to classroom learning. The method is experiential. It focuses on leadership, authority and organization and enables managers to learn from the inside out: that is to say, using their experience of leadership and their feelings about their experience in order to lead more effectively. The Tavistock methodology Established for more than 60 years, the Tavistock Institute applies ideas from across the social sciences, including group dynamics perspectives, to provide practical help to individuals and organisations needing to deal with issues of change, innovation and policy delivery. This way of working has been pioneered and developed over time to ensure that those who experience it benefit from the intensive and practical nature of experiential learning. The workshop is organized by CESMA and developed in collaboration with Tavistock Consulting and OEZPA. All utilize this experiential Tavistock methodology, which combines insight into the individual with an understanding of wider group and systemic processes. In linking these together the individual with the group, the organisation and the wider environment leadership capacity is enhanced and developed. Leadership needs practice and persistence, rather like learning a musical instrument. Topics of the workshop To ensure that Inside Out Leadership fits your learning needs, below are some of the characteristics associated with successful leadership which we will focus on during the workshop. The capacity to remain stable under stress To be able to perceive threats in the environment The ability to contain and control feelings in the face of uncertainty A thorough grasp of your own and others' behaviour as part of managing group dynamics A high achievement and leadership drive Openness to experience and recognition of the need to learn The capacity for self monitoring The ability to identify organizational culture and environmental context The presence of mind and skills to apply insights effectively, especially during reorganizations and current turbulent in competitive environments. 3 We believe that rather than focusing only on theoretical key concepts in leadership development, an appropriate experiential learning setting is the effective way to develop your own leadership potential. This is because it involves having a learning experience, which involves your feelings. Reflecting on that experience, developing an understanding about how you take up leadership roles, modifying the way you exercise leadership and testing this out in new situations, forms the basis of leading in a more effective way. Aim of the workshop Leadership capacity is also intricately bound up with the use of your personal authority in taking up a role as well as recognizing your interdependency with others: authority needs to be given as well as taken; thus there are no leaders without followers prepared to trust in their leadership. Analysing, understanding and working with the complexity inherent in taking up a leadership role, within changing organisations and temporary systems, will make leaders more effective in managing change and improving performance. Developing your capacity to lead will make you more effective in leading change in your organisations. This workshop addresses the development of leadership capacity through experiential learning learning by 'doing' combined with conceptual learning on leadership and group dynamics. Both serve to improve emotional intelligence and your understanding of how organisations function. Is this workshop right for you? The workshop is designed for women and men in significant leadership positions, including executive and non executive directors, senior managers, entrepreneurs and change agents who want to improve their ability to work with complex and challenging issues. 4 What will I develop the ability to do? Exercise leadership more effectively by understanding the kind of leadership you offer, what you expect of yourself, what others expect of you and how to take others with you What more do I need to know? This is a three day residential experiential workshop, designed to explore leadership within the context of organisational life. It will be held in English, so at least a working knowledge of English is required. Clarify your authority to lead or be led and how authority and responsibility inter relate Mobilize and empower others to achieve results Manage uncertainty, both your own and that of your followers, developing your ability to resist the pressure to act in order to reduce uncertainty Understand how you use authority when you are in leadership positions and how your perceptions of your own leaders are influenced by underlying and often unexamined attitudes to authority figures in your own life Understand how authority and group support for action can be lost, leaving the leader isolated Function with increased awareness of how unseen processes, often hidden beneath the surface, conspire to undermine performance. This may also include resistance to learning about the needs of the organisation in the changing environment Manage resistance to change in yourself and others by understanding the ways in which organisational structures provide emotional security in the workplace and can therefore prove difficult to alter The learning is designed to enable you to analyse, explore and experiment with how you use your authority when within leadership roles within the organisational structures of the course. The emphasis is on learning, analysing situations and using this information to guide future action within complex organisations. This will have a positive effect when you continue to lead or influence organisational change. What will the workshop consist of? The programme consists of a number of group events with specific tasks designed to increase your understanding of the leadership role. These include organisational role consultations which give you an opportunity to analyse your current and potential organisational roles, conflicts and uncertainties, and to understand the exercise of authority in your own work life. Links will be made between formative experiences of authority figures and current concerns about leadership and followership. What will I have to do in advance? You will be asked to hopefully do some preparatory work before coming to the workshop. Leaders inside out leadership 4
5 What about logistics? When? The 3 day workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday 26th February and will end at on Saturday 28nd February Where? The workshop will be held at the Hotel Concorde in Arona, 45 minutes north of Milan on the beautiful Lake Maggiore in Italy. It is an ideal environment and residential context for you to really benefit from the learning provided. Milano Linate airport (at km 85: by car about 65 minutes by bus and train about 2 hours). Bergamo Orio al Serio airport (at km 109: by car about 75 minutes by bus and train about 2 hours).
