3 Symposium Description This one-day symposium is designed especially for ophthalmologists, technicians, nurses and allied health professionals who desire to enhance their knowledge in evaluating and managing general ophthalmic diseases. Reports on therapies, new procedures and technologies developed in the field of ophthalmology, and a desire to maintain ethical standards for physicians and other healthcare professionals are contributing factors used in choosing topics for this symposium. The overall goal is to improve the quality of care provided to the patient population served by the attendees. The symposium will deal with common cases and solutions presented via didactic lectures and panel discussions. Symposium Objectives At the end of this symposium, participants should be able to identify, describe and discuss new technologies, techniques, practices and/or concepts concerning the evaluation and management of retinal disease, glaucoma, cataract, cornea, and other areas of clinical or ethical significance. Specifically, they should be able to: Discuss the design and results of the AREDS trial. Discuss the current recommendation for vitamin use for patients with age-related macular degeneration. Discuss the current level of understanding for age-related macular degeneration. Discuss an overview of the increasing importance of molecular genetics in the practice of ophthalmology, both in terms of utilization as a diagnostic tool and as a treatment modality. Gain an appreciation for the clinical utility of molecular genetic analysis in the differentiation between dystrophic and nondystrophic corneal opacification, and learn about ongoing clinical trials involving genetic therapy for inherited ocular disorders. Learn how to incorporate molecular genetic analysis into their practices, including instruction on identifying diagnostic laboratories and practical issues concerning specimen collection, transport and reimbursement for genetic testing. Discuss surgical techniques and developing technologies related to phacoemulsification surgery. Recognize and manage common and uncommon complications that accompany modern day cataract surgery. Discuss diagnosing ocular surface disease (OSD) in the glaucoma patient. Discuss the effect of glaucoma meds on the ocular surface. Discuss the effect of OSD on outcomes of glaucoma surgery. Discuss the management of OSD in glaucoma patients. Discuss the recent seminal publications by the Delphi Panel and DEWS Committees on the diagnosis, classification and management of dysfunctional tear syndrome (DTS). Learn how to incorporate the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the treatment algorithms proposed by the Delphi Panel and DEWS Committees into their own practices, as well as useful tips in managing patients with recalcitrant DTS. Discuss examination techniques related to the ocular prosthesis patient and management of common associated problems. Provide an update on EMTALA regulations and how they impact ophthalmologists taking hospital emergency department calls. Describe the worsening emergency department call crisis in this country as more and more specialists abandon hospitals. Project major changes in health care in this country under the new administration in Washington.
