2 Cutting-Edge Concepts in the Management of Complex Program Overview & Target Audience Effective management of hypercholesterolemia is critical to reducing the global burden of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Moderate- to high-intensity statins, along with lifestyle modification, represent evidence-based, first-line interventions, as reiterated by the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines. However, patients routinely encountered in clinical practice, including those with familial hypercholesterolemia, may require additional approaches to treat hypercholesterolemia. This symposium will help equip clinicians with the necessary tools to overcome challenges in the evaluation and management of patients with complex hypercholesterolemia. The intended audience for this activity includes general internists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with complex hypercholesterolemia. Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Explain the epidemiology and evaluation of familial hypercholesterolemia Review lipoprotein apheresis clinical data and indications for use Describe novel therapies including lomitapide and PCSK9 inhibitors Discuss the 2013 ACC/AHA cholesterol guidelines and associated controversies Review approaches to challenging hypercholesterolemia cases Educational Grants This activity is supported by educational grants from the FH Foundation, the National Lipid Association, Aegerion, Amgen, and Kaneka.
