1 The Epidemiology of Infection Control in Dentistry: Principles and Particulars of Protection (SPICE) Featuring Dr. Ralph Leonard and Dr. Valerie Murrah Friday, October 9, 2015 LOCATION: The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education Sponsored by the University of North Carolina Departments of Diagnostic Sciences and Operative Dentistry
2 COURSE DESCRIPTION The NC Administrative Code specifies that each health care organization in the State, including dentistry, shall designate a staff member to direct infection control activities. The designated staff member in each dental office shall complete a course in infection control addressing seven specific areas. This course satisfies the required Infection Control training as mandated by the Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE). WHO SHOULD ATTEND? New staff members, dentists, dental assistants, hygienists, and the untrained designated staff member who has been identified as the person who will oversee the infection control activities in your office. Any time the person placed in charge of Infection Control for your office changes, the new person should attend the NC required infection control course for dental care offices training program. AT THE COMPLETION OF THIS ACTIVITY, PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO: 1. Describe and discuss epidemiologic principles of infectious disease 2. Describe and discuss principles and practice of asepsis 3. Utilize sterilization, disinfection and sanitation practices 4. Restate universal blood and body fluid precautions 5. Discuss engineering controls to reduce the risk of sharp injuries 6. Demonstrate disposal of sharps 7. Review state laws regarding HIV and Hepatitis B SPICE is a required course. Annual OSHA updates do not fulfill this requirements of this law. However, this course will meet OSHA s annual training requirements (except for office specifics). Please Note: Your annual OSHA-training course will not meet the state requirement for SPICE infection control training. The NC statute is very clear that at least one person in every dental office must complete the state-approved course addressing the topics listed above.
