1 PRESIDENT, CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER AND VICE CHANCELLOR MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES FOUNDATION Position Guide ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AND UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER (UPMC) Founded in 1787, the University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, and was cited in 2014 as the only public university in Pennsylvania considered a Best Value College based on academic quality, cost and financial aid. The university was ranked as the top public university in the country in the publication Saviors of Our Cities: A Survey of Best College and University Civic Partnerships, which measured schools economic and developmental impacts on neighboring regions. The nearly $755 million Pitt spends on research each year directly and indirectly supports the local economy, putting Pitt at the heart of what the U.S. Department of Labor calls an education and health services super sector, and is responsible for more than one in every five jobs in the greater Pittsburgh area. Located on an urban campus in central Pittsburgh, the university is composed of 17 undergraduate and graduate colleges serving more than 28,000 students each year. The centerpiece of campus is the Cathedral of Learning, the tallest educational building in the western hemisphere. As of August 2014, Pitt is under the leadership of its 18 th Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Patrick D. Gallagher. Prior to his chancellorship at Pitt, Dr. Gallagher served as Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he provided high-level direction for NIST in promoting U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards and technology. Pitt and the affiliated University of Pittsburgh Medical Center together serve as a leader among academic medical institutions in the United States in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health, a nationally recognized benchmark of research excellence. UPMC is currently ranked twelfth in the country in U.S. News & World Report s Honor Roll of America s Best Hospitals. With more than 62,000 employees, UPMC is the largest non-governmental employer in the state, and serves 41 percent of the medical-surgical market share in the 29 counties that make up western Pennsylvania. UPMC is comprised of 21 hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh area, with 5,500 affiliated physicians. With more than $11 billion in operating revenue, UPMC returns nearly $890 million back to the community through charity care, community health programs and support for research and education. Notable physicians and researchers affiliated with these institutions include Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine; pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Spock; and Dr. Thomas Starzl, who perfected organ transplantation surgery. UPMC is helmed by Jeffrey A. Romoff, who has served as President since 1992 and Chief Executive Officer since Under his leadership, UPMC has become one of the preeminent integrated healthcare delivery and financing systems in the country.

2 The division of Health Sciences at Pitt is comprised of six schools: Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Of these, the School of Medicine is the largest, serving more than 600 students in 31 departments with more than 2,000 faculty members. The School of Medicine is nationally recognized for its educational excellence and commitment to the advancement of biomedical science. These schools are led by Dr. Arthur S. Levine, Senior Vice Chancellor for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. During his tenure, Dr. Levine has recruited world-renowned scientists to the schools and further developed the university s ranking as one of the top five academic institutions in NIH funding. The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation is the fundraising entity supporting both UPMC and the colleges of Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. The Foundation is governed by an eight-member board of directors with a history of philanthropy and support of both Pitt and UPMC. The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation was created in 2003 to integrate the fundraising teams for the six health-related schools at Pitt along with the primary teaching hospitals of UPMC. In the twelve years since its creation, fundraising has increased from $42 million to $140 million annually. The Foundation currently consists of 98 staff working in alumni relations, annual fund, communications and marketing, corporate and foundation relations, donor relations, planned giving, principal giving, prospect research, records management and special events. With an operating budget of $13 million, the Foundation raises funds primarily for high-quality clinical programs, biomedical research and educational endeavors. To learn more, please visit and ABOUT PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania with a metropolitan area population of 1.3 million. The city s geography is defined by its waterways, as the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers converge to form the Ohio River. The city earned the nickname City of Bridges due to the 446 elevated crossings largely mandated by the area s river systems. Also called the City of Steel, Pittsburgh was a leader in the steel industry for more than a century until the deindustrialization of the 1980s. Since that time, the city has reinvented its economy to focus on technology, especially high technology and biomedical technology, in addition to health care and education. Major corporations located in Pittsburgh include Google, H.J. Heinz Company, U.S. Steel, GlaxoSmithKline and PNC Financial Services. The city also boasts a thriving arts and culture environment, with respected institutions such as the Pittsburgh Symphony, Carnegie Museums and Library, Pittsburgh Opera, Andy Warhol Museum, the Frick Art & Historical Center and the Pittsburgh Zoo, all complemented by a vibrant theater, music and sports culture. 2

3 With the evolution of meds and eds as the successor to the steel industry, the city is becoming increasingly vibrant and youthful. Pittsburgh Public Schools recently launched an ambitious initiative, Whole Child, Whole Community, to improve educational outcomes for students and balance the district budget. The public school system is supplemented by a strong network of magnet, charter and independent schools throughout the city. Pittsburgh also has a commitment to send all eligible urban youth to college or trade school with a scholarship through the Pittsburgh Promise. The Pittsburgh Promise promotes academic success and encourages students and their communities to dream big and work hard toward high aspirations and hope. They aspire to replace the deadly culture of low expectations that often permeates urban schools with the belief that inside every child is a promise, and with the appropriate care, effort and needed resources, that promise will undoubtedly be fulfilled. The full impact of that promise begins with individual children and expands to invigorate the entire community, improve the quality of life in the region, and develop a highly qualified workforce that will meet the needs of local employers, both now and in the future. THE PRESIDENT, CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER AND VICE CHANCELLOR, MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES FOUNDATION The of the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation, is a visionary and science-based fundraising strategist. The President is responsible for planning and leading all aspects of fundraising and comprehensive development initiatives for the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and all UPMC hospitals directly or indirectly through affiliated foundations. The President serves as a high-functioning member of the Pitt and UPMC senior team in a complex matrixed environment. The President reports to the Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the Foundation s Board of Directors. As Vice Chancellor of Development of Health Sciences, the President works very closely with the Senior Vice Chancellor of the Schools of the Health Sciences and collaboratively with the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at the University of Pittsburgh. The President, Chief Development Officer, and Vice Chancellor sets a strong institutional vision for the Foundation s role in philanthropy leading development programs at two of the nation s best health-related institutions. The President works closely with the 3

4 Foundation s Board of Directors and acts as the Board s primary staff liaison. The President manages the portfolio assignments of the University Chancellor, UPMC CEO, Senior Vice Chancellor and key board members with top donors and prospects, assuring timely and productive engagements. The President maintains open and ongoing communication with constituent leadership, providing complete and accurate activity reports, revenue forecasts and situation analyses on a regular basis. Of prime importance will be the continued development of a cohesive University-wide development system that operates from an achievement-oriented environment built on aspirational goals and performance metrics that advance operational excellence. The, an accomplished closer of gifts and accelerator of lead donor prospects, leads a dynamic, multi-faceted Foundation staff of fundraising and administrative professionals that includes a nine-member executive leadership team: Executive Director, Central Development; Executive Director, Clinical Development; Executive Director, Health Sciences Development; Executive Director, Principal Gifts; Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives; Director of Operations; Director of Special Events; Director of Special Projects; and Vice President, Development & Communications, Magee-Women s Research Institute & Foundation. The President also leads the Foundation s efforts to support University-wide comprehensive capital campaigns and strategic funding projects. In order to be successful, the President must be a skilled communicator and relationship builder who can articulate clear and compelling cases for biomedical research and education support that assures the growth and vitality of Pitt and UPMC s premier academic medical community. RESPONSIBILITIES The will have the following primary responsibilities: Significantly increase the level of giving to the Schools of the Health Sciences. Lead, build, inspire and continue to grow the Foundation s high-caliber team of fundraising and administrative professionals. Plan, develop and implement a comprehensive strategic development plan to maximize the short-term and long-term fundraising potential of medical research, clinical programs and education that aligns with Pitt and UPMC s philanthropic vision and strategies. Build strong and mutually beneficial relationships among the academic leadership, faculty and staff of UPMC and external stakeholders including donors, patients, alumni, business and civic leaders. 4

5 Continue to integrate successfully with the University-wide fundraising teams, particularly within the Office of Institutional Advancement, Pitt s undergraduate and graduate schools and its thriving intercollegiate athletics program. Expand the contexts for increased involvement of physicians, faculty, alumni, Board leaders and other volunteers to enhance their advocacy and philanthropic support. Work in partnership with the Foundation s executive leadership team in setting robust but achievable goals with metrics that promote greater accountability. Lead a targeted strategy that enhances private philanthropy and secures major and principal gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Focus on attracting and retaining strong development talent that promotes a diverse and inclusive work environment while providing the staff with ongoing opportunities for personal and professional growth. Design, oversee and strengthen the Foundation s comprehensive grateful patient fundraising in a manner that engages key UPMC physicians and researchers to help match patient and family donor interest with strategic research or programmatic initiatives. Be recognized as a committed, valued and collegial philanthropy leader by the Pitt and UPMC senior leadership, faculty, physicians, researchers, institutional advancement and administrative staffs. Represent the University and UPMC leadership at public functions and events to raise the visibility of the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation as a strong integrated, philanthropic entity. QUALIFICATIONS Deep passion for academic medicine, health sciences and healthcare and a strong familiarity with the issues surrounding academic medical centers. A minimum of 10 years of successful achievement in a broad-based development role in a complex, matrixed organization, ideally within an academic medical center or a blend of leadership experience in higher education and large healthcare systems. Highly collaborative, collegial team builder with proven success in building productive, long-term relationships with senior university administrators, deans, faculty, staff, boards, volunteers and donors. A demonstrated track record of personal success in soliciting high-level major, principal and transformative gifts. 5

6 Experience with planning and executing large capital and endowment campaigns. Ability to successfully develop, inspire, mentor and lead strong fundraising teams in a collaborative, team-oriented approach, with a commitment to Pitt and UPMC s core values of promoting a diverse and inclusive environment. Excellent financial management skills with experience in fundraising and budget analysis, forecasting and planning. A proactive, results-driven, politically astute leader with solid presentation skills and proven ability in written communications. Strong interpersonal and motivational skills, including an exceptional ability to speak on complex medical research and clinical programs with ease; skill in conveying the missions of Pitt and UPMC to a wide variety of constituencies. Experience with the prospect and donor management capabilities of current fundraising software applications such as Ellucian Advance. A bachelor s degree from an accredited university or college is required; a master s degree preferred.
