As the state s only comprehensive academic medical center, UI Health Care offers world-class, patient-centered care; conducts groundbreaking biomedical research; and provides the scientists and health-care professionals of the future with a solid educational foundation.
This campaign isn t about hitting a financial target, it s about what this support will make possible: leading-edge research in areas we haven t even thought about yet, long awaited answers to critical health care questions finally revealed, and breakthrough discoveries that will radically alter the course of medicine. Sally Mason, Ph.D. President The University of Iowa
What began in Iowa City as the nation s first coeducational medical school is now Iowa s only comprehensive academic medical center one of just 131 such centers in the U.S. which consists of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and UI Physicians. UI Health Care is consistently recognized as a highly integrated, premier medical enterprise. UI Hospitals and Clinics was again included in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report s most recent Best Hospitals rankings. Nine specialties, including otolaryngology (5th), ophthalmology (6th), and orthopaedics and rehabilitation (12th) were ranked, and UI Children s Hospital was ranked in all 10 specialty areas. Additionally, 148 UI physicians were included in the publication s 2011 listing of the nation s best doctors. We take pride in our commitment to excellence and innovation and believe the future is filled with change and opportunity: ever-evolving health-care needs, a growing need for resources to support leading-edge research, and the need to assure all Iowans have access to high-quality health care. With the assistance of the UI Foundation, UI Health Care is embarking on this historic campaign not just to sustain excellence, but to keep UI Health Care at the forefront of medical research and the delivery of advanced medical care to patients from Iowa and around the world. 2
When I walk across our medical campus, I am filled with pride for the people and the work being done here. We are continuously striving to provide ever-higher levels of patient care while generating new ways to think about and practice medicine. Jean E. Robillard, M.D. Vice President for Medical Affairs University of Iowa Health Care 3
Our vision for a healthier future Launched in spring 2011, Iowa First: Our Campaign for Breakthrough Medicine is an ambitious $500 million campaign that will transform medical research, education, and patient care at UI Hospitals and Clinics and the UI Carver College of Medicine. Our vision for a healthier future and our campaign for breakthrough medicine grew from a detailed assessment of the long-term health-care needs of Iowans, how the UI fulfills the state s medical needs, and what resources are required to achieve our mission of changing medicine and changing lives. This campaign is focused largely on enhancing our capacity for life-changing breakthroughs in Iowa s nationally recognized centers of excellence while identifying new opportunities to serve Iowa and the world with innovation and compassion. Our funding priorities for this campaign include the following areas: Children s health $100 million Eye disease, particularly conditions leading to blindness $100 million Neuroscience, including diseases such as Alzheimer s and Parkinson s $100 million Cancer treatment and research $55 million all we can to empower them. Cardiovascular health $50 million Mary Joy and Jerre L. Stead Co-chairs Iowa First campaign New frontiers for high-risk, high-yield research $50 million Our gift is first and foremost an investment in people. The doctors, nurses, staff, and researchers are constantly thinking about the people who will be served by their work and what they can do to make life better for them. We want to do Medical education to ensure exceptional care for future generations $25 million Aging and aging-related diseases $20 million Funding these priorities will have an enormous impact on the future of medicine and the future of healthcare. We invite our stakeholders patients and families, corporate partners, alumni and friends, as well as the State of Iowa and the University of Iowa to join us in changing medicine and changing lives. 4
One of the things you need to decide as a philanthropist is, where do you get the most bang for the buck? The University of Iowa is staffed with very competent people who have a vision. And I think that our contribution will make a significant difference. John Pappajohn Honorary Co-chair Iowa First campaign 5
Make a Difference Iowa First will generate substantial resources for research, faculty recruitment and enrichment, student scholarships, and patient care. That s why your support is so important. Please consider making a gift to this historic campaign. Your participation will provide hope to patients, give much-needed assistance to medical students and their mentors, and bolster support for leading-edge research and treatment programs. A major goal of this campaign is to secure endowed funds to support in perpetuity a variety of areas, including: Student Scholarships By current standards, the UI Carver College of Medicine offers a comparatively affordable medical education. However, students today still face large debt loads upon completion of a medical degree, and we run the risk of losing talented potential students to schools that are able to provide better financial assistance. Private support from our alumni and friends in the form of named, endowed scholarship funds will help the University provide critical resources to top students from Iowa and beyond. A commitment of $100,000 or more can endow a student scholarship. Faculty Positions In order to provide a world-class education for future physicians, the college must recruit and retain top faculty. Additionally, faculty members must have the necessary resources to maximize their potential as educators, clinicians, and researchers. Named faculty positions allow the college to reward and retain its most promising faculty members and attract the best recruits from around the country. A commitment of $1 million or more will fund an endowed professorship, while a pledge of $2 million or more will establish a faculty chair in a specific discipline. Research and Programming Funds Life-changing and lifesaving breakthroughs in medicine are happening at Iowa. While much of our funding for research comes from government and foundation grants, endowed funds are essential to our success. They provide important bridge funding for our more established programs, as well as start-up funding for promising young investigators. A gift of $50,000 or more can create an endowed research fund. With a gift to this momentous campaign, you can make a difference in the lives and work of UI physicians and other health-care professionals, medical students, faculty members, biomedical researchers, and patients and their families. Your generosity will help ensure that Iowa has the resources to develop important discoveries and breakthroughs. These important advances will lead to improved medical care for our patients, who come from all over Iowa, and in many cases, from all over the world. Please join us, and help the Iowa First campaign create a healthy new world. 6
We re Iowa s only academic medical center. We have an absolute responsibility to provide each and every Iowan with the highest quality, safest patient care. We strive for excellence at all times, and we can continue to provide cuttingedge medicine with the right levels of support. Kenneth P. Kates Chief Executive Officer University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Associate Vice President University of Iowa Health Care 7
