There is lots of vocabulary in this chapter! So you have 2 Study Guides today! Watch the slide show & pay attention! Quad means four. Why would all of these shapes be called quadrilaterals? Each shape has four sides. square rhombus trapezoid rectangle parallelogram 1
In this slide show you will learn that we identify quadrilaterals by: their angles and the length of their sides. A square has 4 sides that are each the same length and are congruent. It has four right angles (perfect corners)
A rhombus has four sides that are each the same length. But it has two acute & two obtuse angles. obtuse acute acute obtuse A square and a rhombus both have four sides that are the same length. So, how are they different? 3
A rhombus can be thought of as a slanted square. If we push on the left-hand side of the square, it might end up looking like a rhombus. The only difference between a square and a rhombus are their angles. 4
A square is a rectangle but with four congruent sides. A square is a rhombus but with four right angles. Although a square can be called a rectangle and a rhombus, we call it a square because it has 4 right angles & 4 congruent sides. 5
A trapezoid has four sides. Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are not parallel. These are not parallel These are parallel This trapezoid is regular. regular trapezoid Also known as an isosceles trapezoid This trapezoid is an irregular trapezoid. irregular trapezoid 6
A rectangle has four sides two long sides and two short sides. Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are also parallel. It also has four right angles. A parallelogram has four sides two long sides and two short sides. Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are also parallel. But, it has two acute and two obtuse angles. 7
A parallelogram can be thought of as a slanted rectangle. If we push on the left-hand side of this rectangle, it might end up looking like a parallelogram. The only difference between a rectangle and a parallelogram are their angles. 8
A rectangle is a parallelogram but with four right angles. Although a rectangle can be called a parallelogram, we call it a rectangle because it has 4 right angles. A rhombus is a parallelogram with four congruent sides Although a rhombus can be called a parallelogram, we call it a rhombus because it has 4 congruent sides. 9
Quadrilateral - Trapezoid - Parallelogram - Rectangle - Rhombus - Square - Four sided figure. A quadrilateral with only one set of parallel sides. A quadrilateral with two sets of parallel sides. A parallelogram with right angles. A parallelogram with equal sides. A rectangle with equal sides or a rhombus with right angles. Trapezoid Only 1 set of parallel sides Isosceles Trapezoid 4 sided figure Rhombus Parallelogram with equal sides Rhombus with right angles Parallelogram Two sets of parallel sides Square Rectangle Parallelogram with right angles Rectangle with equal sides 10
State whether each statement is always true, sometimes true, or false. 1) A square is a rectangle. 2) A rectangle is a square. Always True Sometimes True 3) All rectangles are squares. 4) All squares are parallelograms. False Always True State whether each statement is always true, sometimes true, or false. 5) All quadrilaterals are rectangles. False 6) A square is a trapezoid.
