4 What can we do for you? At Brockenhurst College we have everything you need to progress to higher education. Access courses are designed to get you into university if you don t have traditional A Level or vocational qualifications. At Brock we run a range of access diplomas that are accredited by top awarding bodies including City and Guilds and Edexcel. As an access course student you will normally study full time over one year. However, you may be allowed to study part time over two years. Importantly, we run a compact timetable to help you coordinate your studies with other commitments. Currently we are rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and also hold prestigious Beacon College status for excellence and innovation in learning. So join our community and share in these strengths to get where you want to be in the future. Quality learning All our teachers have expert knowledge and relevant professional experience. Each one is passionate about his or her subject and will strive to help you realise your potential. Importantly, we keep class sizes small to ensure you get the attention and support you need to excel. Support Your personal tutor will give you advice and support on every aspect of your course. Furthermore, he or she will work with you to develop your skills, expertise and career plans. You can also ask for specialist support if you need it. In addition, our Student Services team will be on hand to address any questions or concerns you may have. Finally, our Careers Advice Service will offer one-to-one sessions to help you plan your professional progress. University partnerships We have strong links with Bournemouth, Chichester and Southampton Solent universities which offer you excellent progression opportunities. In addition, many of our students have gained places at other prestigious universities. Employer Relationships We have solid links with businesses and industries, helping you secure work placements and also contributing to your course. Travel to college As a student you can get discounted passes on South West Trains services to the nearby main line station. You can also benefit from subsidised bus services directly to and from the main campus. You can find out more about travel by visiting our website. Facilities All higher education courses are based at a dedicated building, which is just a short walk from the main campus. There you will find modern facilities that are regularly reviewed and updated to deliver the optimum learning experience. Also, our Learning Resource Centre is a spacious independent study environment, which is equipped with specially trained staff to support you. 4

5 Access courses Your Access Diploma Access courses are usually studied full time over one year. However, you may be allowed to study part time over two years. Importantly, we run a compact timetable to help you coordinate your studies with other commitments. Course fees Fees range from 3,022 to 3,384. Access courses are free for students under 24 who do not have a full level 3 qualification. If you are aged 19 or over you are able to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan. See page 7. Entry requirements There are no mandatory entry requirements for Access Diplomas. We recommend that you contact relevant university admissions offices to confirm their specific requirements regarding English and Maths grades. Diploma in Allied Health Professions This diploma is ideal if you wish to progress into areas such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, podiatry or paramedic science. As a student you will study biology as a mandatory subject before choosing three other subjects to suit your career plans. Option subjects comprise: Psychology, Chemistry, English, Maths, Physics, and either Social Issues in Healthcare or Sociology. Fees 3,384 Diploma in Humanities or Humanities with Mathematics These programmes are suitable if you wish to gain a degree that will help you pursue a career in teaching, librarianship, archaeology, or business and management. After mandatory study you may choose three to four other subjects that are relevant to your future plans. Option subjects comprise: English, Law, History, and either Psychology or Sociology. Fees 3,022 Diploma in Law If you want a career as a solicitor, barrister, legal executive, paralegal, or in another related area, then our Access Diploma in Law can be an important first step. In addition to law as a mandatory subject, you will choose three other subjects to support your career aspirations. Option subjects comprise: English, History, and either Psychology or Sociology. Fees 3,022 Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery This popular diploma usually leads to a career in nursing or midwifery. Biology and social issues in healthcare are mandatory subjects. You then choose one full subject in either Chemistry or Psychology and then study one unit from the other subject. Fees 3,384 Diploma in Primary Teaching This programme is the one for you if you are planning a teaching career at primary level. As a student you will choose a combination of any four of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Law, Maths, Physics, Psychology, History and Sociology. Fees 3,384 Diploma in Science If you wish to pursue any science-based career, including careers in biomedical science, biology, forensic science, chemistry, physics, maths or environmental science, then this course gives you the ideal foundation. As a student you will choose a combination of any four of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Psychology. Fees 3,384 Diploma in Social Science This diploma provides the grounding for a variety of careers including social work, counselling, psychology, sociology and teaching. Both psychology and sociology are mandatory for this qualification. You will also choose two other subjects from the following list: English, Law, History and Social Issues in Healthcare. 6 Preparation for access courses We offer several additional courses to help you achieve what you need need to get into university. These may run alongside your access course. However, you might wish to spend a year completing these preliminary phases before beginning your Access Diploma. GCSE Maths (free) GCSE Maths is required by most higher education institutions. Therefore we recommend that if you don t already hold this qualification that you take this course. A good grasp of basic mathematical concepts and techniques is essential to support work across a whole range of other courses. This qualification opens many doors into employment and continuing education. GCSE English (free) GCSE English gives you the opportunity to develop the level 2 literacy and communication skills that are essential for further study and employment. It is designed for people who wish to progress to a high grade pass of A*-C. This course uses a varied selection of materials suitable for learners aged 16 or over. Functional Skills English (free) This course aims to ensure you have functional skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It also helps you to apply these skills in both everyday life and the workplace. Functional Skills Maths (free) This course is designed to give you functional skills in numeracy that will allow you to work confidently, effectively and independently. It also helps you to apply these skills in both everyday life and the workplace. GCSE Science ( 275) A GCSE Science qualification is generally needed for careers in medical services, public and armed services, and for teacher training. This single core science qualification will give you the opportunity gain a high grade pass of A*-C. A wide range of source material and practical work will be used to improve your knowledge and skills. 7 Advanced learning loans Advanced learning loans give you access to financial support for tuition costs. This means that rather than having to pay for your course at the start, you can pay with a loan from the Student Loans Company. You will only start to repay the loan once you have left the course and are earning over 21,000 a year. If you are aged 19 or over you will have the option to: Pay the course fees personally Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for you Apply for an advanced learning loan to cover the complete cost of the course Advanced learning loans are for anyone who is: Aged 19 or over at the start of the course Studying at Level 3 to Level 6 in further education or training Resident in the UK Please note: You will not be eligible for a loan if you have already taken one to complete the same type and level of qualification. If you are aged and are applying for your first Level 3 qualification, this may be free. Please contact us to check your eligibility. If you are taking out a loan for an access course, you will not have to repay it if you then go on to complete a higher education qualification. Loans are available irrespective of your current employment status and will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks.
