3 ABOUT THE JULIA CHILD AWARD The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts (the Foundation) created the annual Julia Child Award to continue to foster Julia Child s legacy. The Foundation will present the award to an individual in association with the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History (NMAH) at a gala to be held in conjunction with the Smithsonian s Food History Weekend (FHW) in Washington, D.C. on October 22, The winner will be announced on or around August 15, 2015 (Julia Child s birthday) and will receive a $50,000 grant from the Foundation provided to a food-related non-profit of the recipient s choosing. The Foundation created the award to: Encourage people to cook for themselves, to better understand where food comes from, to value eating and drinking and the importance that both can play in improving the quality of life. Expand public awareness and understanding of the recipient s accomplishments and agenda. Help further the impact of the recipient s objectives by providing a grant to a food related non-profit organization of the recipient s choosing. The recipient of the award will have significant accomplishments in the following areas: Educator: the person will demonstrate educational contributions as a teacher, advocate and/or food or cookbook writer. Communicator: the recipient will be an effective communicator and motivator in bettering public perceptions and practices related to cooking, eating and drinking. Innovator: the recipient will have demonstrated innovation in America s food world by pioneering a new path and/or fostering a significant shift in the thinking, production, cooking or development of how Americans eat and drink. Mentor: the recipient will have a demonstrated track record of mentoring others in food and wine and/or related professions. Integrity: the recipient will have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in their work and have exhibited a high level of personal integrity in both their public and private life. Bridge builder: The recipient will have conducted themselves as a bridge builder within the national food community. Independence: The recipient will have a demonstrated ability to act independent of conventions or the status quo to convince the public to change its thinking towards cooking, eating and drinking. Award Selection Process The Award recipient will be chosen by an independent jury of five esteemed food industry professionals appointed by the Trustees of the Foundation. The selection process and juror Page 3 of 11
4 coordination will be overseen by an Award Director who will manage a private shortlist of candidates from which the jury will select the recipient. The Award will be presented at a gala event which kicks-off the FHW, on Thursday, October 22, The gala will bring together more than 200 food professionals, advocates, experts and aficionados. Proceeds from the gala will help support programs, exhibitions and research of the American Food History Project at the NMAH. The Award is distinct from other food industry awards in that it is not a peer recognition vehicle, but designed to educate and motivate the public, through an honorific grant to a food-related non-profit of the recipient s choice and in the recognition of the recipient s significant accomplishments. Julia made cooking fun and approachable, while at the same time encouraging excellence. The Award supports her commitment to educate and encourage others and the Foundation hopes it will provide a tangible legacy of her passion for the joys of cooking and eating well. Page 4 of 11
5 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS The Foundation is seeking proposals from designers to create an original Logo for the new Julia Child Award and to design the Award itself. Both the Logo and the Award should be in keeping with Julia Child s image and values. It should embody the following attributes: - Honesty - Integrity - Hard Work - Practicality - Competence - Intelligence - Fun The Logo and Award design should reflect and/or be inspired by the imagery most frequently associated with Julia Child as a cooking teacher, cookbook author and beloved American cooking personality. Such imagery may include: - Pots and Pans - Other Kitchen Equipment or Kitchen Imagery - Julia s signature pegboard used to organize her pots, pans and utensils - Julia s own personal style The Award should be a three-dimensional object, which could be displayed on a mantelpiece or desk, but of such a size and weight to be comfortably held in one hand. The Foundation is attracted to the idea of a mini-pot or pan hanging from a piece of pegboard and/or a stylized version of this idea. However, the Trustees are very open to other original ideas. In keeping with Julia s own values, the Foundation would like to avoid, for both the Logo and the Award, imagery that uses a close likeness of Julia and should not include a chef s toque as Julia never considered herself a fully qualified, professional chef. It should also not be designed as a luxury item or elaborate trophy. Bling was never something Julia prized. Last, the Foundation would also like to avoid the award being a medallion and/or a certificate to avoid confusion with other existing top food world prizes. Please also note that because the Award is the intellectual property of only the Foundation, its design and its logo should not include any design element, or references to, the Smithsonian s or National Museum of American History s logos, exhibitions or content. 7 COMPENSATION The Foundation is requesting that designers provide their services pro bono. As a non-profit organization, the Foundation has limited resources which it must reserve for grant-making activities. The Foundation only has a small budget set aside for the production costs of the Award itself, so designers should consider this when determining materials to be employed in the physical production of the Award. In exchange for providing design services pro bono, the selected designer will receive public credit for the Award design as part of the publicity for the Award, on the Award website, at the announcement of the recipient and at the Award presentation during the gala, subject to the Foundation s ability to control such mentions. Foundation controlled press releases mentioning the Award will include the information on the designer of the Award and, where possible, include a link to the designer s work and/or website. Since the Award will be a high profile, national honor, garnering national media coverage, this should afford strong public exposure and recognition for the chosen designer, in lieu of fees. The chosen designer will be permitted to include the Award and Logo as part of its portfolio on its website and promotional materials. The designer or firm will also be able to promote its winning the design competition via its own press release, subject to review and approval by the Foundation prior to publication. The Foundation will own all legal rights, including copyrights, to the design, logo and to the Award itself, and the selected designer will be required to sign a legal agreement conveying all rights to the Foundation. 8 ABOUT THE JULIA CHILD FOUNDATION FOR GASTRONOMY AND THE CULINARY ARTS The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts was created by Julia in 1995 as a grant giving private foundation. Through its support of other non-profit organizations whose work advances matters Julia valued, the Foundation honors her lifelong love of learning, her farreaching impact as a teacher and mentor, and her passion for gastronomy and the culinary arts. It makes grants primarily for scholarships for professional culinary education, for research in gastronomy and the culinary arts, to support food literacy programs and to organizations which foster career opportunities in food writing and food related media. You can learn more about the organizations and the programs the Foundation supports on the Foundation website. Page 8 of 11
9 ABOUT THE SMITHSONIAN S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY* Through incomparable collections, rigorous research and dynamic public outreach, the National Museum of American History explores the infinite richness and complexity of American history. The museum is also the home of Julia Child s kitchen, which is the centerpiece of the exhibition called FOOD: Transforming the American Table It hosts dynamic programs, demonstrations and events that connect audiences with the history of American food and agriculture as part of the American Food History Project. The museum is located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. and admission is free. * This information provided on an informational basis only. Page 9 of 11
