1 YEAR 8 FRENCH PERIODS: 5 x 35 mins. PREP: 1 x 60 minutes TEXT-BOOK: Common Entrance 13+ Guide Vocabulary and Speaking. (Malvern Language Guides). Expo 2 (Heinemann) CE Grammar Guide ISEB (Nelson) (Scholars) The work covers the 4 National Curriculum Attainment Targets: AT1: Listening and Responding; AT2: Speaking; AT3: Reading and Responding; AT4: Writing. EMPHASIS: Whilst a good deal of time is spent on ATs 1-2, much attention is paid to coping with the demands of the reading-comprehension and creative-writing exercises (ATs 3-4). Equal time is spent on the 4 ATs as the Common Entrance awards 25% of marks to each skill. COMMON ENTRANCE: As in Year 7, we aim to cover the Common Entrance syllabus whilst at the same time developing the suggested National Curriculum objectives. CE requires pupils to: orally carry out role-plays and speak about a prepared topic; in addition, pupils must answer listening and reading comprehension questions and write creatively; this includes gap-filling, sentences based on a picture or written stimulus and letters. SCHOLARSHIP WORK: For scholarship candidates, time is spent developing the skills required for the specific types of question such as translations, story-reproduction, information-gap exercises, and readingcomprehension passages with answers required in French, etc. TOPICS COVERED: 1. The language of the classroom. 2. House, home, daily routine and chores. 3. Life and work at school. 4. Time, dates, numbers and prices. 5. Personal description. 6. Family, friends and pets. 7. Meeting people. 8. Free-time activities. 9. Describing holiday activities. 10. Visiting a café or restaurant. 11. Simple health problems. 12. Description of a town or region. 13. Finding the way and using transport. 14. Understanding tourist information. 15. Shopping (e.g. for food, clothes, presents) and pocket money. 16. Weather.

2 ACTIVITIES: Pupils are encouraged to listen, read, speak and write French as much as possible. Activities include: listening comprehension for gist or detail; studying of authentic-style letters and practice in writing similar letters; role-plays and creation of own dialogues; writing about pictures; learning vocabulary and phrases; games; songs; poems; project-work; reading short stories; word-processing; textmanipulation; videos; use of dictionary; ICT for grammar and vocabulary practice. GRAMMATICAL CONTENT: In addition to the grammar covered in Years 6 and 7, we aim to cover the following: être and occupations; some conditional; simple future; interrogatives; imperatives; infinitive constructions; verbs and infinitive; perfect tense for comprehension; some imperfect for comprehension. (Scholarship candidates will be expected to cope with the more complex grammatical constructions required for their particular papers, e.g. all tenses, object pronouns, etc.) FRENCH TRIP: Year 8 pupils may have the opportunity to take part in the activity trip to Normandy with Year 7 during the Easter holiday.

EMPHASIS: Whilst a good deal of time is spent on ATs 1-2, attention is paid to coping with the demands of reading comprehension, and creative writing exercises (ATs 3 & 4). 4 GRAMMATICAL CONTENT: In addition to extending and practising the basic grammar introduced in Years 5 and 6, we aim to cover the following: Revision of present tense. Subject pronouns. Asking questions Intensifiers and connectives. Verbs and infinitives. Present tense of reflexives. Jouer à and jouer de Aimer and definite article Partitive article Il faut and infinitive Comparisons. Quantities Giving opinions Prepositions à and en Possessive adjectives Irregular verbs in the present tense. Use of depuis, quand and si. Modal verbs. Some perfect tense. Some conditional (je voudrais). FRENCH TRIPS: Each class visits France for a day during the summer term and conducts interviews with French people. Year 7 pupils also have the opportunity to take part in an activity trip to Normandy during the Easter holiday. They stay in a château and all the activities are conducted in French. The pupils really enjoy this trip and come back full of confidence and enthusiasm.

The work covers the 4 National Curriculum Attainment Targets: AT1: Listening; AT2: Speaking; AT3: Reading; AT4: Writing. EMPHASIS: The 4 basic skills are developed, and there is continued use of the target language. PUPILS' OBJECTIVES: Consolidation of: Greetings Self and family. Pets. Numbers Age, days, dates, birthdays. Colours. Ask and say where people live. Describe home/bedroom. Tell the time. Understand and talk about meals and food. Ask about places in town. Ask for directions Express opinions Talk about school and daily routine. Understand and talk about leisure activities. Learn more facts about France, French speaking countries and culture. Begin to understand basic grammar AREAS OF EXPERIENCE: Personal and social life; everyday activities; the world around us; the world of communications; the world of imagination and creativity.

Numerals. FRENCH TRIP: During the summer term, Year 6 pupils are offered a three-day cultural trip to Paris. This trip proves to be very popular with the children.

7 YEAR 5 FRENCH PERIODS: 3 x 35 mins. PREP: 20 mins. COURSE-BOOKS: Expo Book 1 (Pub. Heinemann). The work covers the 4 National Curriculum Attainment Targets: AT1: Listening; AT2: Speaking; AT3: Reading; AT4: Writing. EMPHASIS: Although all 4 skills are introduced, the emphasis at this stage is on ATs 1, 2 and 3, as we wish the children to be confident in speaking and understanding the language at this stage. We aim to use the target language as much as possible. PUPILS' OBJECTIVES: Introduction to France (geography and way of life) and why we study French. Learn good pronunciation and intonation. Exchange greetings. Understand and give personal information. Use classroom language and vocabulary: instructions and equipment. Understand and say the alphabet. Count in French. Understand simple dates. Know colours. Talk about one s family, extended family and pets. Describe people and self: height, hair, eyes, personality. Talk about home area. Describe house, especially bedroom. Talk about home activities. Understand and tell the time. AREAS OF EXPERIENCE: Background to France; Personal and Social Life: self, family and relationships, free time and social activities; The World Around Us: home town and local area; Everyday Activities: the language of the classroom and home life, people, places and customs; The International Community: life in other countries and communities. ACTIVITIES: Listening to taped dialogues. Simple oral exercises in pairs/groups. Acting out scripts. Creating own dialogues. Drawing and labelling. Crosswords. Word-searches. Songs and team games. 8 GRAMMATICAL CONTENT: The emphasis is on functions rather than on grammatical points at this stage. However, the following will be introduced: Pronouns, including on. Accents Possessive adjectives Ordinal numbers Plurals Avoir, être, s appeler Simple er verbs Prepositions. The noting down and learning of basic vocabulary related to topics being studied is encouraged.
