1 Community Public Charter School Dragon Scales January 8, 2016 If you re not willing to learn, No one can help you. If you re determined to learn, No one can stop you. Anonymous In This Issue: NEW CPCS Daily Schedule January 15 ~ After School Activity Time Reminder to Dress Warmly Student-Run Coat Drive Supporting CPCS A Day In The Life CPCS & Murray High Parent Support Group Golden Apple Teacher Nomination Teacher Wish List High School Transition Dates & Information Charlottesville Happenings ~ Chess Club, Volleyball, Summer Enrichment Program Classroom Clues Calendar of Upcoming Events New CPCS Daily Schedule After many thoughtful and deliberate conversations about the current schedule, and in response to information from the students, a decision has been made to change the daily schedule. The school day still begins at 9:18 and ends at 3:27. We have moved our lunch back by 13 minutes and have therefore, added a snack break in the morning. We are asking each family to send in a healthy snack for their child and, if you are able, send in snacks for those who might not be able to send in a snack. Students will still be considered tardy if they arrive later than 9:18, unless they are arriving on a school bus. We are excited about this new schedule and the students were pleased when we shared this information with them on Thursday. 9:18-9:48 ~ PE (M, W, F)/Electives (T, Th) 9:48-10:46 ~ Period 2 10:46-11:44 ~ Period 3 11:44-11:52 ~ Snack (WE ARE ASKING PARENTS TO SEND IN HEALTHY SNACKS WITH YOUR CHILD EACH DAY) 11:52-12:50 ~ Period 4 12:50-1:30 ~ Lunch (12:50-1:10)/Recess (1:10-1:30) 1:30-2:28 ~ Period 5 2:28-3:27 ~ Period 6 January 15 ~ After School Activity Time Molly Bunts and some of her peers have planned an after school activity time. On Friday, January 15 from 3:30-5:00, all of the students are invited, and encouraged, to stay after school to participate in a variety of choices including a movie, improve, open-gym, and dancing, complete with lots of food! Students will need to be picked up promptly at 5:00 PM. Below is a permission slip that must be returned in order for your child to participate! Page 1 of 16

3 Reminder to Dress Warmly As a reminder, we are dedicated to spending time outside each and every day. Our students are outside during PE, some Electives, and recess. Students are encouraged to dress for the weather. Some students are indicating that they don t want to go out because they are wearing the wrong shoes or clothing. Your help with this would be appreciated. Additionally, if you have extra mittens/gloves or hats lying around, we would love to keep some on hand for the children to borrow. Student-Run Coat Drive One of our students, Bryan Sorto Guzman, along with Ms. Sites, is conducting a coat drive that will benefit not only our students but those in our community. If you have a coat that you would like to donate, please just send it in to school. Thanks! Supporting CPCS If you shop Amazon, try AMAZONSMILE.COM instead and designate the School Improvement Fund as the organization of your choice. CPCS receives a percentage of the profits from your purchase. Please encourage you, your family, friends and neighbors to save Box Tops for Education. We have already collected several hundred since our last competition in September! You are also encouraged to participate in the Terracycle recycling program which raises money for our school. Finally, please take a moment to register your grocery store cards with Kroger and Giant. And don t forget to designate your Target Red Card for CPCS! A Day In The Life. Fun in the gym during PE Theo s basket made during Elective Time Page 3 of 16

8 Teacher Wish List Stationary bikes ~ We would like to have several stationary/exercise bikes available for the students to use if they need to burn off a few extra wiggles. If you have a stationary bike that you are not using, or maybe a friend or family member has one, that you would like to donate to us, we would be very appreciative. The students are hoping to start a Yo-Yo club. We are in need of quality yo-yos as well as a teacher! If you know how to yo-yo and would be willing to share your talent with us on Tuesday mornings from 9:17-9:52 for 4 weeks, we would love to have your help! If you have any nice yo-yos looking for a new home, please consider donating them to CPCS. Thank you!
