1 Basic: Communities, Week 4 Bank & Library Unit objective: Students will be able to fill out a deposit slip, practice a dialogue at the bank, fill out a library application, practice a dialogue at the library and interpret a library receipt. Monday Lesson Objectives: Materials Bank functions and vocabulary Fill out a deposit slip Have a dialogue at the bank with a teller. Deposit slips (see coordinator) East Lake Library, (see below) Activity Ideas: Deposit slip practice After discussing the bank and its functions, model filling out a deposit slip on the ELMO. Concentrate on the following fields: name, date, signature, amount, cash back and amount to deposit. Fill out one slip together. Pass out slips and have students fill out their own. Teachers can make fake checks to give to students with an amount if they wish. Bank Dialogue As a class, create a bank teller dialogue. A: Hello. Can I help you? B: Deposit please. A: Cash back? B: Yes. A: Id please. B: Okay. Ss practice with their slips and play money. Ss practice with many people.

The library is open 12:00pm 8:00pm Tuesday and Thursday. 6. The library is open 10:00am 6:00pm Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
3 7. The library is open 12:00pm 5:00pm on Sunday. 8. The phone number is You can check out books with a library card. 10. It is free to check out books! 11. You can check out up to 100 books. 12. You can borrow books for three weeks (21 days). 13. You need to return the books by the due date. 14. If you return books late, there is a fee. 15. The fee is $0.30 a day. 16. If you have a question, ask the librarian. 17. The library is a great place!
4 Tuesday Lesson Objectives: Review Monday s objectives as appropriate Identify library specific vocabulary words (reference, check-out, late, receipt, librarian, library card, check out, return, overdue fine, due date, take books home) Fill out a library application Materials Yes/no signs (volunteer made) Library application (see below) Activity Ideas: Yes / No questions: After talking through the vocabulary words listed in the objectives (using pictures or props if necessary), tape the signs to opposite sides of the classroom. Ask students questions pertaining to the vocabulary to check comprehension. Examples: Is check out take books home? Is late on time? Does a librarian work at a bank? Do you need a library card to check out books? When you return books do you give them back? Students move to their answers. Can count how many are in each. Library Application: Model filling out the application on the ELMO. Students fill out library applications on their own.

Practice as a whole class, teacher vs students, half class/half class, in pairs and have volunteer pairs perform for the class.
