A French woman, Jeanne Calment, started skating at the age of 85, appeared in her first movie at 114, and held a concert in her neighborhood on her 121 st birthday. Some scientists in the past said that humans couldn t live past 110, but Calment lived until she was 122 years and 164 days old. Here in Japan, 73-year-old Tamae Watanabe became the oldest woman ever to climb Mount Everest in Nepal. It was her second successful climb of the mountain in ten years. Psychology is a science that studies the mind and how it influences people s actions, and the people who study psychology are called psychologists. Sports psychology helps athletes, or teams, to get better results. Chris Carr is a sports psychologist, and he helped the USA diving team in the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in He believes that sports psychology plays a very important role in helping athletes to get ready for the Olympic moment. Is sports psychology limited to professional players? 1 In fact, we can see that sports psychology is used at all levels of sport. For example, the members of the sports psychology program in John F. Kennedy University, California, USA, have worked with groups of athletes from schools and colleges in the local community, as well as Olympic athletes and professional teams. Sports psychology is used in more popular sports for example, soccer, golf, and tennis as well as in less well-known ones such as cricket and fencing. It is even used in non-sporting areas, including education and business. These advantages mean that it is growing quickly all over the world. Everybody knows that talent and physical skill are important in every athlete s success, but many people don t understand the importance of the mind and how we use it. In fact, the mind is a powerful factor in being successful in sports. By understanding the power of your mind and being able to use it to help you succeed, you can be a good sportsperson. Sports psychology can help your mind in many ways. For example, it can help you to set and achieve goals, keep your level of *motivation up, and manage the fear and the pressure of losing games. To be successful, you need to be able to build a 2 system for setting goals and reaching them. You may think that goal-setting is easy, but if you don t have a good model or teacher in this area, you will have to use a *trial-and-error approach to goal setting. 9

11 As a sportsperson, you need to understand your motivation. Most top players will tell you that they play their sport because they love to test their skills against other players. However, even the best athletes in the world sometimes lose their motivation. Sommer Christie, of the Canadian Sports Psychology Association, advises athletes how to keep their motivation up, even in the off-season. She says the off-season is the perfect time to keep practicing and to work on everything that makes you better. In addition to training the mind to win, some sports psychologists believe that knowing how to face losing games is also important. In the Summer Olympic Games in London in 2012, over 10,500 athletes tried to win a gold medal and only about 300 won. The others experienced the sadness or anger that comes with 3 failure. Jordan Metzl, a sports expert for young athletes in New York, says that the pressure of losing and the pain of the loss are very strong feelings which athletes have to manage. He thinks it is impossible to get ready for this loss, and believes that thinking about only winning during a game is a more important part of an athlete s psychology. Peter Haberl, senior psychologist on Team USA for the mental care of its top Olympic athletes, takes a different approach. He believes you cannot take away thoughts of losing. So he gives athletes support to face the loss, and to understand that losing and winning are both part of the athlete s experience. One of the wonderful points of sports psychology is that it works both on and off the field. It helps you to become more confident. All successful players know that when they are confident, their chances for success are much higher. Feeling confident leads you to challenge more, and to reach your best results. The way of building your self-confidence in sports psychology can help you to get more power both in sports and in your life. Also, sports psychology is useful not only for each player or person but also for a team. Anytime you have a group of people together, differences in personal characters and goals can lead to argument or fighting. If you don t have the same goals and understanding of one another, you will see a decrease in your team s success. You can use this basic idea of sports psychology in order to make your communication skills better, to take leadership, and to work together better as a group in your life at home, at school, or in your office.
