2 HITOS EN ko MUGARRIAK 2012 LANDMARKS Colaboración con empresa Establecer vínculos a medio plazo con las empresas es sinónimo de desarrollo y sostenibilidad en un contexto de confianza y transparencia. En este sentido, este año destacamos el convenio de colaboración firmado con la empresa multinacional PRAXAIR, así como la incorporación de la empresa EDERFIL BECKER a nuestra asociación. Zentzu honetan, aurten PRAXAIR multinazionalarekin sinatutako kolaborazio akordioa aipatu nahi dugu, baita EDERFIL-BECKER enpresa gure asoziaziora batu izana ere. Collaboration with companies Forging medium-term links with companies is synonymous of development and sustainability within a context of trust and transparency. In this sense, this year we highlight the cooperation agreement signed with the multinational company PRAXAIR, as well as the incorporation of the company EDERFIL-BECKER to our Association. Nueva sede de IK4-LORTEK Este año ha sido muy especial; el 16 de julio celebramos la inauguración del nuevo edificio de IK4-LORTEK donde compartimos nuestra ilusión con más de 150 invitados. Estas instalaciones nos permiten abordar con solidez la consolidación del centro. Dispone de más de m 2 de superficie, repartida en oficinas, laboratorio de caracterización y planta piloto y un moderno equipamiento con el que afrontar los retos de investigación y ofrecer a la industria las soluciones que necesita. Joan den uztailaren 16an IK4-LORTEK zentruaren eraikin berriaren inaugurazioa ospatu baikenuen, gure ilusioa 150 gonbidaturekin partekatuz. Instalakuntza berriak zentruaren sendotze prozesuan lagungarri izango dira m 2 baino gehiagoko azalera ditu eta honako ekipamenduz horniturik dago: bulegoak, karakterizazio laborategia eta solairu pilotoa, ikerketa arloko erronkei aurre egin ahal izateko eta industriak behar dituen irtenbideak eskainiz. New headquarters IK4-LORTEK This year has been very special; last 16th of July we celebrated the inauguration of the new building of IK4-LORTEK where we shared our enthusiasm with more than 150 guests. These facilities enable us to strengthen the consolidation of the Centre. It has more than 5,000 m 2 of surface, distributed in offices, materials characterization laboratories and a pilot plant and modern equipment to face the new research challenges and offer the best technological solutions to the future industry needs.

Desde luego no lo es la posición actual de IK4 como agente tractor de la I+D+i vasca. Por eso es justo valorar como merece el hecho de que, en un contexto económico terriblemente adverso, nuestra Alianza muestre una salud capaz de sustraerse a los peores síntomas de un trastorno generalizado. Se podrían poner sobre la mesa innumerables explicaciones y sesudos análisis, pero seguramente en todos ellos terminaría aflorando la percepción de que se han hecho las cosas bien. Si hoy IK4 es un proyecto consolidado, viable y con proyección de futuro es porque hace unos años las personas que forman parte de esta Alianza tuvieron la clarividencia de apostar a medio y largo plazo, sentando las bases de una estrategia que permitiría a IK4 hacer frente a los difíciles retos que asomaban por el horizonte. Esa visión estratégica es la que nos ha permitido situarnos en una posición competitiva ventajosa a la hora de anticipar las herramientas precisas para hacer frente a las dificultades del camino. Es de justicia reconocer las cosas bien hechas, pero eso no exime del deber de continuar esforzándose para trazar un mejor camino por el que transitar hacia el porvenir. Al contrario, es el momento de reforzar los cimientos y fortalecer las vías para que IK4 logre desenvolverse con solvencia en un futuro caracterizado por la incertidumbre general. En este sentido, hemos dado un paso de gigante dotándonos del nuevo Plan Estratégico que se aprobó el pasado mes de diciembre. Este plan, que constituye nuestra guía común para los próximos cuatro años, establece las líneas maestras que dibujan el papel que IK4 ha de cumplir en el nuevo contexto. Se trata de un plan que nos insta a maximizar el valor aportado e incrementar la competitividad de las empresas, impulsar el uso eficiente de los recursos para lograr un modelo sostenible en el tiempo, colaborar con la Administración en la definición de las políticas industriales y apoyar las políticas públicas de desarrollo económico a través de la generación de conocimiento. Sobre esta base, el Plan despliega siete retos y 21 objetivos estratégicos. En resumen, los desafíos que nos plantea para los próximos años son consolidar el proyecto común, coordinar los programas de investigación, avanzar en la ordenación de la oferta tecnológica, fomentar la transparencia y la compartición de información, buscar clientes y mercados nacionales e internacionales, reforzar el papel como interlocutor de las instituciones y atraer y retener talento. Todo ello con un ambicioso objetivo: conseguir que, al final de este complicado tramo del camino, en 2016, IK4 sea un referente de la I+D+i en Europa. La meta no es para nada sencilla. Pero estoy convencido de que, al igual que hicimos años atrás, seremos capaces de lograrlo gracias al compromiso de todas y cada una de las más de personas que formamos parte de este proyecto. Al fin y al cabo, las personas con talento son nuestro principal activo. Gauza garrantzitsu gutxi gertatzen dira kasualitatez. And the current position of IK4 as a driving force of Basque R+D+i is no coincidence, either. That the fact that in a terribly adverse economic context our Alliance is displaying a state of health that is capable of resisting the worst symptoms of a widespread disorder. One could come up with countless explanations and wise analyses, but the perception that things have been done well would most likely emerge in all of them. If IK4 is a consolidated, viable project today blessed with a future projection, it is because a few years ago the people who belonged to this Alliance had a sufficient medium and long term vision to take the plunge and establish the bases of a strategy that would enable IK4 to address the difficult challenges appearing on the horizon. That strategic vision is the one that has allowed us to put ourselves in an advantageous competitive position when it comes to anticipating the tools needed to address the difficulties along the way. It is only fair to recognise things well done, but that does not exempt one from the duty to go on making an effort to trace a better path to take towards the future. Indeed, it is the right moment to shore up the foundations and strengthen the means so that IK4 can cope competently in a future characterised by widespread uncertainty. In this respect, we have taken a giant leap forward by providing ourselves with the new Strategic Plan , which was approved last December. This Plan, which will be our guide for the coming four years, lays down the guidelines outlining the role that IK4 has to fulfil in the new context. It is a plan that urges us to maximize the value contributed and increase the competitiveness of companies, to encourage the efficient use of resources so that a model sustainable in time can be achieved, to collaborate with the Administration in the specification of industrial policies, and to support public economic development policies by generating knowledge. On this basis, the Plan sets out seven challenges and 21 strategic aims. Basically, the challenges facing us over the coming years are: to consolidate the shared project, to coordinate the research programmes, to move the planning of our R+D offer forward, to foster transparency and the sharing of information, to seek national and international clients and markets, to reinforce our role as the interlocutor of the institutions, and to retain talent. All this is underpinned by an ambitious goal: to make IK4 a benchmark in R+D+i in Europe by the end of this rocky stretch of road. The goal is by no means straightforward. But I am convinced that, just as we did years ago, we will be capable of achieving it thanks to the commitment of each and every person among the 1,400 of us who belong to this project. At the end of the day, it is people with talent who are our main asset.

4 Jose Miguel Erdozain Director General IK4 IK4 ko Zuzendari Nagusia Managing Director of IK4 Resulta inevitable comenzar este mensaje haciendo alusión a la situación económica que nos toca vivir. Y es que son ya nada menos que cinco años de durísima crisis, de una realidad extremadamente complicada para ese tejido productivo que desde IK4 conocemos tan bien gracias a nuestra cercanía con las empresas. Afortunadamente, esa misma cercanía nos permite lanzar un mensaje de optimismo porque sabemos muy bien que la empresa vasca siempre ha visto en la I+D+i una herramienta esencial para ser más competitiva y, en consecuencia, la percibe en general como una inversión de futuro y no como un mero gasto sin retorno a medio-largo plazo. Creemos que desde IK4 hemos sido capaces de interpretar adecuadamente esta realidad, especialmente relevante en el contexto actual, y hemos sabido anticiparnos apostando por dar más valor a las empresas, por maximizar nuestra aportación en clave de transferencia de conocimiento. Este esfuerzo nos ha permitido mantener nuestra actividad e incluso potenciarla, colaborando con más de 800 empresas cliente y consolidando así nuestra posición como entidad de referencia en I+D+i. En este contexto, los resultados alcanzados por IK4 en el ejercicio 2012 sólo pueden tener una lectura positiva. Nuestra Alianza alcanzó unos ingresos algo superiores a los 105 millones de euros, de los que 95 corresponden a actividades de I+D+i, lo que representa una cifra muy similar al ejercicio anterior. Más allá de la frialdad de unos números que sitúan a IK4 entre las 10 principales corporaciones tecnológicas privadas europeas, me gustaría destacar que el 63% de los ingresos tiene su procedencia en la contratación directa por parte de las empresas, lo que nos consolida como entidad líder en Europa en función de este ratio. Este es un dato clave para entender la buena posición de IK4 a pesar de los ajustes presupuestarios que en diferentes medidas han debido realizar las administraciones públicas, con su correspondiente reflejo en las partidas destinadas a programas de I+D+i. Incluso en este escenario tan desfavorable IK4 ha sabido adaptarse a las condiciones del entorno y conseguir que los ingresos procedentes de programas de apoyo a la investigación impulsados por las administraciones hayan permanecido prácticamente estables. Así, IK4 ha obtenido retornos por valor de cerca de 66 millones de euros por su participación en el VII Programa Marco de la UE, habiendo tomado parte en 168 proyectos de investigación, de los cuales ha liderado 48. Nuestro valor en clave de generación de actividad económica también se evidencia a través de nuestra aportación de know how tecnológico. El número de patentes solicitadas en 2012 fue de 36, y el número de patentes concedidas 15. Con ellas alcanzamos un total de 145 patentes en vigor. Asimismo, realizamos el pasado año inversiones por valor de 20 millones de euros. Son datos de los que podemos estar satisfechos. De hecho, cuando echamos la vista atrás, nos sentimos realmente orgullosos de haber podido ayudar a cientos de empresas a encarar el futuro con mejores perspectivas. Ahora bien, lejos de ser autocomplacientes tenemos que redoblar nuestros esfuerzos para apoyar a un tejido empresarial obligado a vivir en un contexto de incertidumbre permanente. Nos toca perseverar y seguir avanzando por esta senda, continuar adaptando la Alianza a un futuro cambiante y complejo. Sin duda, para ello va a ser una herramienta fundamental nuestro nuevo Plan Estratégico , que sienta las bases para consolidar IK4 como referente de la investigación aplicada en Europa. Es un esfuerzo compartido para el que sé que podemos contar con todos los que forman parte de IK4. Hasteko, ezinbestekoa da gaur egun bizi dugun egoera ekonomikoari aipamena egitea. And this tremendously severe crisis has in fact already been going on for the last five years, no less, and is an extremely complicated reality for the manufacturing base which we at IK4 are so familiar with, thanks to our proximity to the companies. Fortunately, this very same proximity allows us to convey a message of optimism because we know very well that Basque enterprises have always regarded R+D+i as an essential tool to enable them to be more competitive, and that is why they tend to perceive it as a future investment rather than a mere item of expenditure lacking any returns in the medium to long term. We believe that at IK4 we have succeeded in adequately interpreting this reality, which is particularly significant in the current context, and that we have been able to anticipate it by committing ourselves to giving more value to companies, and by maximising our contribution in the form of knowledge transfer. This effort has enabled us to maintain our activity and even to boost it by collaborating with over 800 client companies and thus consolidate our position as a benchmark organisation in R+D+i. In this context, the results achieved by IK4 in 2012 can only be interpreted in a positive light. Our Alliance achieved income of just over 105 million euros, 95 million of which corresponds to R&D&i activities, which is a figure very similar to that of the previous year. Beyond the starkness of the figures that put IK4 among the top 10 main private R+D corporations in Europe, I would like to highlight that 63% of our income comes from direct contracting made by companies, which consolidates our position as a leading organisation in Europe in terms of this proportion. This is a key detail when it comes to understanding IK4 s good position, despite the budgetary adjustments which, to varying degrees, have had to be made by the public administrations, with their corresponding reflection in the items devoted to R+D+i programmes. Even in such a dismal scenario IK4 has been able to adapt to the local conditions and has managed to secure income from programmes supporting research being promoted by the administrations, and thus end up in a virtually stable situation. So IK4 has obtained returns to the tune of nearly 66 million euros for its participation in the EU s 7th Framework Programme, having participated in 168 research projects and leading 48 of them. Our value in terms of generating economic activity is also clear though our contribution of technological know-how. The number of patents applied for in 2012 was 36, and the number of patents granted was 15. With them we now have a total of 145 patents in force. Likewise, we made investments to the tune of 20 million euros last year. These are figures we can be satisfied with. In fact, when we glance back, we have a tremendous sense of pride because we have been able to help hundreds of companies face the future with a better outlook. But right now, far from being complacent we have to redouble our efforts to support the business base which is being forced to live in a context of permanent uncertainty. It falls to us to persevere and go on advancing along this path, to continue to adapt the Alliance to a changing, complex future. There is no doubt that what is going to be an essential tool in this is our new Strategic Plan ,which establishes the bases for consolidating IK4 as a benchmark of applied research in Europe. It is a shared effort in which I know we can rely on each and every one of us who belongs to IK4.

Nuestra condición de referentes en el Estado español en estos ámbitos hace necesaria una apuesta permanente por investigar y aplicar en materiales y tecnologías de unión, novedosos y avanzados como fricción, SLM, cladding, laser etc. desarrollando herramientas de simulación, cálculo estructural y análisis que optimicen y garanticen los mejores resultados de los procesos en su aplicación. Nuestro compromiso se focaliza en proponer y apoyar a nuestros clientes en su planificación tecnológica a largo plazo, y trasladar y aplicar estos conocimientos y tecnologías al diseño y desarrollo de productos y procesos que les proporcionen ventajas competitivas que les permitan alcanzar posiciones ventajosas y diferenciadas en el contexto internacional. Our position as a reference in Spain in the above mentioned fields commits us in a continuous investment in joining technologies research applied to materials, including new and advanced processes like Friction Stir, SLM, Cladding, laser,, all supported by tools for simulations, structural calculation and analysis to optimize and ensure the best results in the applications of the processes. Our commitment focuses on proposing and supporting our customers and partners in their long-term technology planning and transferring this knowledge and technologies to the development of products and processes that will provide them with sustained competitive advantage and enable them to achieve differential and advantageous positions in the international context. For us is a real challenge to contribute to the success and the consolidation of the International positioning of our customers, and this encourages us in the development of our strategic project to reinforce and consolidate our position in the European context. El conocimiento profundo de los clientes, sus necesidades, nos está permitiendo dirigir con convencimiento nuestras actividades de especialización y de transferencia. Clientes que, a pesar de la situación económica en la que vivimos, siguen apostando en la innovación como claves de su competitividad y crecimiento y que, desde IK4-LORTEK nos sentimos satisfechos por poder participar en su cometido estratégico. During the 10 years trajectory of IK4-LORTEK, our vocation has focused on forging relationship and development of research projects with companies, which has been the key to conclude successfully the last exercise 2012, taking into account the shortages. Deep knowledge of customers and their needs, is allowing us to direct with determination our specialization and transfer activities. Despite the economic situation in which we live, our industrial customers are betting on innovation as the key to their competitiveness and growth. IK4-LORTEK is pleased to be part of their strategic mission. In this sense, our recently inaugurated building has been designed to have more appropriate spaces and means, to support the needs in materials, processes and joining technologies. This has been a year of thinking, too. The strategic planning of IK4-LORTEK, in alignment with the strategic planning of IK4 Research Alliance, includes a period in which our main challenges are, develop dimension, maximize the excellence in research, increase our activity in Europe and continue transferring value to the industry. In 2012 we have made an extra effort to improve the position of the centre at international level (mainly European). IK4-LORTEK has submitted more project proposals to European Programmes than ever (50% growth compared to 2011) and has got a greater and more active presence in technological platforms and events across Europe. As a result of this work, the first Clean Sky project (WELDMINDT) has been funded, being IK4-LORTEK included as CSJU partner. One of our main challenges in the next years is the structural consolidation of the centre and the development of a culture based on scientific excellence and good management. We have to grow with excellence and for that purpose international cooperation is a must. For it, and also to support our customers in their internationalisation, the commitment will be reinforced in the next years, because we must go beyond.
