2 Jesús María Iriondo Presidente de IK4 IK4 ko Presidentea Chairman of IK4 En estos tiempos en los que el debate tiende a centrarse en cuánto falta para alcanzar esa salida del túnel que parece verse a lo lejos no estaría de más dedicar algunos minutos a pensar no tanto en cuándo podremos dar por terminada la crisis sino en cómo queremos salir de ella. Dando por sentado que en algún momento nos encontraremos con un escenario diferente al que hemos padecido estos últimos años estamos preparados para competir con éxito en las nuevas coordenadas que se van a dibujar? Porque en un mundo globalizado y cada vez más exigente está claro que nuestra ventaja competitiva no pueden ser los costes. Quizás lo fueron en algún momento, pero seguro que no lo van a ser en el futuro. Dónde va a situarse entonces nuestro valor diferencial? Euskadi realiza una inversión en I+D del 2,12% del PIB (dato de 2012), frente al 2,07% en UE27 y 1,29% en España. Este dato se sustenta en un consolidado Sistema de Vasco de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación que cuenta con amplio respaldo de la Administración y se beneficia del convencimiento ampliamente extendido entre nuestras empresas de que la innovación es un factor clave de la competitividad. Todo ello contribuye a fortalecer nuestra posición pero exige estar alerta para no caer en la trampa de la complacencia. Creo que en este contexto resulta imprescindible redoblar la apuesta por favorecer la competitividad de nuestro tejido industrial como eje central de la generación de riqueza y motor de la actividad económica, desarrollando para ello estrategias avanzadas de alto valor añadido. Tenemos que superar el modelo de valor basado en fabricar bien para integrar eficazmente en los productos y procesos de negocio la investigación, el desarrollo y la innovación. Las empresas necesitan apoyo, nuevos espacios y herramientas de colaboración para multiplicar capacidades de innovación y abordar mejor su inserción en el mercado global. Tenemos en Euskadi una buena materia prima. Por ejemplo, las capacidades científico-tecnológicas generadas en fabricación avanzada, un concepto que engloba todas las actividades relacionadas con la fabricación intensiva en conocimiento. Y es que en IK4 sabemos muy bien que la tecnología y el conocimiento juegan un papel multiplicador en la adquisición de ventajas competitivas. Así que estamos a disposición de las empresas para ayudarles en este apasionante reto. Un reto que pasa por la transformación de actividades productivas tradicionales en nuevas industrias tecnológicamente avanzadas, que han integrado la innovación y la apuesta por la calidad y el valor añadido en su cadena de valor. Porque la tecnología y la innovación ya no sólo son factores de diferenciación para la empresa en un país como el nuestro, sino de supervivencia. Es nuestra responsabilidad como Alianza Tecnológica facilitar ese conocimiento a las empresas para que nuestras empresas sigan siendo competitivas y rentables produciendo en Euskadi. I believe that in this context it is essential we intensify our efforts to encourage the competitiveness of our industrial fabric as a central focus in generating wealth and driving the economy, and to do so developing advanced high added value strategies. We have to overcome the value model based on good manufacturing in order to efficiently integrate research, development and innovation into both products and business processes. Companies need support, new spaces and collaborative tools to increase their ability to innovate and better enable them to position themselves in the global market. The Basque Country has good raw material, eg. scientific and technological capabilities in advanced manufacturing, a concept which encompasses all activities relating to the intensive production of knowledge. At IK4 we know all too well that technology and knowledge play a multiplying role in acquiring a competitive edge. We are therefore at the service of businesses to help them in this passionate challenge. This challenge requires transforming traditional manufacturing activities into new technologically advanced industries, which have integrated innovation and strive for quality and added value in their value chain. Because technology and innovation are no longer only factors of differentiation for businesses in a country like ours, but a factor of survival. It is our responsibility as a Technological Alliance to facilitate this knowledge for businesses so that our companies continue to be competitive and profitable whilst producing in the Basque Country.

3 Jose Miguel Erdozain Director General IK4 IK4 ko Zuzendari Nagusia Managing Director of IK4 Por primera vez en mucho tiempo podemos comenzar esta carta sin hacer referencia a un horizonte cargado de nubes de tormenta. Han sido 5 años en los que hemos tenido que abordar cada nuevo ejercicio sabiendo que para numerosas empresas de nuestro entorno podría ser el último. En IK4, por nuestra cercanía a aquellos que día a día construyen con su trabajo el progreso y la prosperidad de nuestra sociedad, hemos compartido la ansiedad con la que muchos de ellos han peleado para sobrevivir. Ha sido un período muy prolongado de zozobra que ha causado daños importantes al tejido productivo y al conjunto de la sociedad. Hoy, al escribir estas líneas, ese horizonte que señala nuestro futuro muestra signos que nos permiten pensar que lo peor ha pasado. No es que todas las dificultades hayan quedado atrás, ni mucho menos, pero, por primera vez desde 2009, comenzamos el año sin esa sensación de catástrofe inminente que se había convertido en el estado natural de las cosas. Sabemos que no va a ser fácil. La incipiente recuperación económica que se alumbra ante nosotros va a requerir mucho esfuerzo y seguramente llegará tarde para algunos. Para los que hemos sido capaces de capear el temporal sin sufrir daños irreversibles comienza un período apasionante. Tenemos ante nosotros la oportunidad y la responsabilidad de jugar un papel protagonista en el nuevo ciclo económico. Para ello tenemos que reforzar nuestro posicionamiento como entidad comprometida con el progreso de las empresas mediante nuestra función de líderes en el desarrollo de tecnologías innovadoras que contribuyen de forma real a mejorar la competitividad. Ése ha sido siempre nuestro papel y en este momento de cambio de ciclo nos toca ser más eficientes que nunca. Nos toca ser decisivos. Afortunadamente, muchas empresas han sido conscientes en este periodo de que la apuesta por incorporar conocimiento a sus productos y servicios es una condición imprescindible para seguir siendo competitivas. Esa convicción, reforzada desde la administración pública vasca incluso en momentos de extrema penuria fiscal, ha tenido mucho que ver con el nivel de resiliencia de nuestro tejido productivo. Por nuestra parte, podemos afirmar que desde IK4 hemos cumplido nuestra misión con nota más que aceptable y hemos sido capaces de mantener una trayectoria positiva a pesar de las dificultades del contexto. Nuestra Alianza ha obtenido en 2013 unos resultados que consolidan su tendencia de los últimos años, alcanzando unos ingresos por encima de los 100 millones de euros, en línea con el ejercicio anterior. Podemos, en consecuencia, sentirnos razonablemente satisfechos. Más allá de los factores cuantitativos, es momento de centrar esfuerzos en los aspectos cualitativos, porque sabemos que sólo el mantenimiento de una apuesta decidida por la excelencia y la especialización inteligente nos permitirá conservar y potenciar nuestra posición de corporación tecnológica de referencia. Ese esfuerzo sostenido es también imprescindible si queremos seguir siendo uno de los players relevantes en el programa Horizonte 2020 y tener cada vez más peso específico en el mapa de la I+D+i europea. Abordamos, pues, un nuevo ciclo que nos exige dar respuesta a los retos de siempre y a otros nuevos que encontraremos en el camino. Para superarlos con éxito necesitaremos poner en valor lo que nos une, sumar masa crítica y abordar los desafíos desde la colaboración entre los centros, así como con las empresas y las administraciones. Llegan nuevos tiempos y en IK4 estamos preparados para avanzar con paso decidido hacia ese horizonte. For the first time in a very long time we can start this letter without referring to a horizon full of storm clouds. Over the past 5 years we have had to tackle each new year knowing that it could be the last for many companies in our area. At IK4, our close relationship with those working day after day to build the progress and prosperity of our society has meant that we have shared the anxiety that many have had to contend with in order to survive. It has been a very long period of worry which has badly damaged the production base and society as a whole. Today, when writing these lines, that horizon pointing to where our future lies is displaying signs that allow us to think that the worst may be over. It isn t that all the difficulties are now behind us, far from it, but for the first time since 2009, we have started the year without that sensation of imminent catastrophe that had become the natural state of affairs. We know it s not going to be easy. The incipient economic recovery that is lighting the way ahead of us is going to take much effort, and will very likely arrive too late for some. An exciting period is opening up for those of us who have managed to ride out the storm without sustaining irreversible damage. What we are facing is an opportunity and responsibility to play a leading role in the new economic cycle. To achieve this, we have to reinforce our positioning as an organisation committed towards the progress of companies through our role as leaders in the development of innovating technologies that actually contribute towards improving competitiveness. That has always been our role, and at this time when the cycle is changing, it is up to us to be more efficient than ever. It is now up to us to be decisive. Fortunately, many companies have become aware during this period that the commitment to incorporate knowledge into their products and services is an essential condition if they are to go on being competitive. This conviction, reinforced by the Basque public administration even at moments of extreme fiscal penury, has had much to do with the level of resilience of our production base. For our part, we can assert that at IK4 we have fulfilled our mission more than satisfactorily and we have been capable of maintaining a positive course despite the difficulties of the context. In 2013 our Alliance achieved results that consolidate its trend in recent years, achieving income of over 100 million euros in line with the previous year. So we can be reasonably satisfied. Beyond the quantitative factors, the moment has come to focus our efforts on qualitative aspects, because we know that only by sticking to a decisive commitment towards excellence and intelligent expertise will we be able to keep and boost our position as a benchmark R&D corporation. Sustained effort is also essential if we want to go on being one of the significant players in the Horizon 2020 programme and have increasingly greater specific weight on the European R&D&i map. So we are embarking on a fresh cycle that is requiring us to respond to the usual challenges and other new ones we may come across along the way. To successfully meet them, we will need to highlight what unites us, add critical mass and tackle the challenges through collaboration among the centres as well as with companies and the administrations. New times lie ahead of us and at IK4 we are prepared to move forward with a decisive step towards that horizon.

4 HITOS EN ko MUGARRIAK 2013 LANDMARKS Tecnologia y colaboracion con empresas Establecer vínculos a medio y largo plazo en las empresas es sinónimo de desarrollo y sostenibilidad en un contexto de eficacia y transparencia. En este sentido destacamos los tres convenios de colaboración con empresas relacionadas con el mundo de la tecnología laser, en dos campos estratégicos: la fabricación aditiva de componentes metálicos y las uniones mediante laser. Teknologia eta enpresen arteko kolaborazioa Enpresekin epe ertain-luzerako loturak gauzatzea garapen eta jasangarritasunaren sinonimo dira, konfidantza eta transparentzi testuinguru batean. Zentzu honetan, aurten laser teknologia arloko hiru enpresekin sinatutako kolaborazio akordioa goraipatu nahi dugu. Akordio bakoitza bi arlo estrategikoetan ematen da: osagai metalikoen fabrikazio gehigarrian eta laser bidezko loturetan. Technology and collaboration with companies Linkages in the medium and long term in business is synonymous with development and sustainability in a context of transparency and efficiency. In this regard we highlight three cooperation agreements with companies related to the world of the laser technology, in two strategic areas: the additive manufacturing of metal components and joints using laser. Dicho proceso ha llevado a que a partir del 1 de Enero de 2014, IK4-LORTEK se haya transformado de asociación a cooperativa. 6 IK4 LORTEK IK4 LORTEK Iñaki Otaño Presidente de IK4-LORTEK IK4-LORTEKeko presidentea Chairman of IK4-LORTEK En nuestro constante desarrollo de IK4-LORTEK, en este ejercicio hemos tenido una intensa y especial dedicación a varios importantes apartados, que han posicionado al Centro con una fortaleza y capacidades que nos posibilitan avanzar en la trayectoria de ser un referente en el contexto europeo, en el ámbito de las tecnologías que abarcamos. Por un lado, hemos modificado nuestro modelo societario, pasando de ser una Asociación a una Cooperativa sin ánimo de lucro, por ser este un modelo más consistente y coherente con nuestro origen y la dimensión tanto financiera como de personas y equipamiento del Centro. Asimismo, entendemos que este modelo nos aporta la adecuada estructura y equilibrio societario para el desarrollo de la filosofía de gestión participativa e implicación conjunta de las empresas y personas que componemos el Centro. Esto nos ayudara a transmitir mejor la información y el necesario conocimiento de la empresa a todos los agentes que la componen, para con ello diseñar la evolución estratégica y el proyecto que mejor responda al desarrollo de las personas y empresas involucradas. Todo ello potenciara la motivación y el compromiso de todos con el futuro de IK4-LORTEK. Por otro, hemos mantenido una intensa dedicación en el ámbito europeo en todas las áreas. Hemos desarrollado una amplia actividad en la participación en proyectos estratégicos de investigación, liderando una parte importante de los mismos y contando con partners muy potentes y cualificados. La acción de networking asimismo ha sido muy activa y fructífera, estableciendo una red de alianzas y colaboraciones en Europa que potencia y amplia nuestras capacidades en los ámbitos tecnológicos avanzados de nuestra especialización. In our constant development of IK4-LORTEK, this year we have had a special and intense dedication to several important sections, which have positioned the Centre with strength and capabilities that enable us to move forward on the path of being a reference in the European context, in the field of technologies that we cover. On the one hand, we changed our corporate model, from being an association to a non-profit cooperative, this model is more consistent and coherent with our origin and financial, personnel and equipment dimensions of the Centre. We also understand that this model gives us the proper structure and corporate balance for the development of the philosophy of participatory management and joint involvement of the companies and people who make up the Centre. This will help us to better transmit information and the necessary knowledge of the company to all the agents that compose it, to thereby design the strategic evolution and the project that best responds to the development of people and companies involved. 11 05 We have to grow with excellence and for that purpose international cooperation is a must EUROPE INTERNATIONAL 2013, a year for the consolidation. Despite being a transition year between the Seventh Framework Programme and Horizon 2020 Programme we have maintained the progress of the previous years in terms of proposals submitted. The balance has been excellent, since a success rate of 50% has been achieved and two new projects have begun at the end of the year: TIFAN and LIGHT- WELD. The first one underpins the research in additive manufacturing, one of the IK4-LORTEK s strategic lines. It aims at developing and manufacturing more efficient and lighter air cooling unit fan wheels by Selective Laser Melting in an economical viable manner, thanks to its higher design freedom and material utilisation efficiency compared to traditional manufacturing techniques. The latter is focused on the development of advanced welding technologies for newly developed light alloys to enable its introduction in aircraft fuselage manufacturing processes. It should also be noted that we have strongly worked in the positioning of the center for H2020 Programme, raising awareness of the center and its capabilities in different frames and participating in the meetings and events linked to different European initiatives, both individually (IK4-LOR- TEK became EFFRA partner in 2013) and represented by the IK4 alliance (EERA, EGVIA), mainly in the strategic fields for IK4-LORTEK of Manufacturing and Energy.
