3 Overview This document was developed as a guide to help install the Citrix client on personal devices to allow connectivity to the MedStar Health external Citrix site which is reachable at Disclaimer: This document does not infer any level of support for connectivity of personal devices to the Medstar Health Citrix Environment. Medstar Health and Dell Services do not provide support or troubleshooting for connecting your personal device to the Medstar Health Citrix environment. Support for connectivity from Medstar Health owned devices will be provided through the normal channels. What is Citrix and why do I need it Citrix is application virtualization and allows remote access to applications regardless of location. Citrix technologies and compressions greatly improve application response and performance. The application appears to be running on your device but is actually running on the Citrix Server. Additionally, as no data is transferred to your device, the solution is much more secure than other application delivery methods. Device Types The Medstar Citrix environment can be connected to from various devices. The primary device type that connects into the environment are Windows based PC s however connectivity options exist for Macintosh OSx and mobile devices running ios and Android. This document will provide some tips and tricks to help you connect your various devices to the applications made available to you via How do I connect For desktop systems, point your browser to The web page will open and offer to install or download the client if necessary. Once you have the necessary client, you will be able to logon and use the applications that are available to you. Mobile devices require the installation of Citrix Receiver which is available from the Android Market aka Google Play, or the Apple App Store depending on your device. Additional connectivity information for the various device types are provided below. This includes screenshots for the Mobile devices and additional information to help with connectivity on the Desktop systems. 3
4 Desktop Systems Windows Clients If no client exists, you should be provided an option to install the client upon connection to Add citrix.medstar.net to trusted sites in Internet Options Recommended Browser is Internet Explorer 8 or 9 Firefox Browser does work Google Chrome does work however, since Client Auto-Detection does not work, you must modify the settings after you logon to use the Native Client. Once you have signed in, click the Settings button and select Native Client even though it says Not available. Due to this, we recommend Internet Explorer or Firefox. Macintosh OSx devices If no client exists, you should be provided an option to download and install the Citrix receiver from If this is not automatically presented to you it is recommended to open a connection to to download and install Citrix Receiver Firefox works better than Safari if connecting to using Safari causes issues or does not launch your applications via Citrix (after installing the client), we recommend trying Firefox as the browser. We have seen instances where Firefox will allow the application to launch successfully when Safari will not. Mobile Devices As with any device, network speeds greatly affect the performance of every application. To help ensure an optimal user experience, we recommend that your device is connected to the Internet using a Wi-FI connection. While 3G and 4G speeds are normally fast enough for a good experience, they can also be very inconsistent resulting in some application pauses, disconnects and other errors. Please keep in mind that most applications are NOT designed for touch input. Use the Zoom feature when necessary to help ensure you are pressing on the correct menu option or button when using applications via mobile devices. To help simplify the configuration of the Citrix Receiver client on mobile devices, two auto-configuration links have been configured and made available via By opening the appropriate link for your device type (Android or ios), the Citrix Receiver account will be created and configured for using Citrix Receiver. In order for this to work correctly, you MUST have already installed Citrix Receiver on your device. Once Receiver has been installed, open your browser to and then click on the appropriate link for your tablet. You will be asked if you want Add Account. Press the button for Add Account and then click Save. Then Select the Medstar Health Citrix account to logon. 4
5 ipad - Once Receiver has been installed, open your browser to and then click on the appropriate link for your tablet. You will be asked if you want to Add Account. Press the button for Add Account and then click Save. Then open Citrix Receiver and Select the Medstar Health Citrix account to logon. You can then sign in using your Medstar credentials and open your available applications. Android we recommend loading Firefox as the default browser. Using Firefox, open your browser to and then click on the appropriate link for your tablet. You should then see a notification that the account was added. Open Citrix Receiver and click Log On. If presented with a prompt to Install, press the Skip to Log on option. You can then sign in using your Medstar credentials and open your available applications. If the automatic configuration steps above do not work for your device, the screenshots below will provide assistance in manually configuring your device for connection.
