1 USER GUIDE Remote Desktop Connection user guide for Android. 1. Introduction These instructions apply to Android 4.1 or greater. This document is intended for any user wanting to access their office PC remotely from an Android device (tablet or phone). By using Remote Desktop Connection you can take full control of your Microsoft Windows office PC from your device. Your device will display exactly what your office monitor would normally display, which may make it quite small on some devices. The following instructions were created on a 10 Android tablet, but they should be similar on most devices. 2. Installation 1. on your Android device, go to the Google Play Store and search for Windows Remote Desktop. You should locate the free App shown below: Remote Desktop Connection for Android 2014 Page 1 of 6

2 2. click the Free label and then click install app. It will then appear in your installed apps and may be placed onto one of your screens. Locate and launch it. The following window may open the first time the application is started: 3. tap the back button. This will take you to the next screen: Remote Desktop Connection for Android 2014 Page 2 of 6

3 4. the first thing to do is to configure the Remote desktop gateway, so tap Gateway to go to: 5. tap Gateway and click the (+) button to add a gateway, choose your own gateway name, and enter the Server details as below. Credentials can be left as, Use credentials from connection, as it will then use the same username and password as you use for your PC. 4 Note:the server name should always be set to: rdgateway.nottingham.ac.uk. 6. next you need to configure the PCs you wish to contact. Tap Remote Desktops and click (+) and enter the details of the PC you wish to contact. The PC name can either be the hostname or IP address of the PC (use your own username and password): 7. you should then tap Done. The new PC will be shown as follows: 8. you can start the Remote session by tapping the entry on this screen. Add other PCs if you need to. Remember, if the PC usually enters sleep mode out of hours, as most do, then you need to use the WakeMyPC service to wake it up. Remote Desktop Connection for Android 2014 Page 4 of 6

5 2.1. The WakeMyPC service Before you can use a remote desktop connection, you must first wake the PC you wish to connect to. You can do this from your device by using WakeMyPC. This is the name for the new Wake-on-LAN (WoL) service that allows you to start your office PC from home. With this new service you no longer need to leave your computer turned on in order to be able to use Remote Desktop Connection. Note: Before attempting to wake your office PC from home, you should first attempt it from another office PC to ensure that it works. To wake PCs running Windows go to: 9. go to and login with your University username and password. You will need to prefix your username with ad\ as shown: 10.if not already shown, enter your username and click Search Remote Desktop Connection for Android 2014 Page 5 of 6

6 11.this will display a list of PCs that you have logged-in to. Click on the Wake link next to the name of the computer you wish to wake up 12.when you click the Wake link, WakeMyPC will try contacting your PC. The PC should respond after a few seconds or if the computer is in the Shutdown state, this may take a few minutes. WakeMyPC will keep you informed with an animated display. When your computer has been successfully contacted WakeMyPC will display a green tick icon: Note: if WakeMyPC is unable to contact your computer the software displays a red cross. This may mean that Wake-on-LAN is not correctly enabled on your computer or the computer is disconnected from the mains supply or network 13.You can now run Remote Desktop Connection as described earlier in this document. The link will not work in Android. 3. Troubleshooting If you are having problems using WakeMyPC, you should test this across your office or between two offices to make sure it works before attempting to use the service from home. If it does not work you may need to do some additional configuration.
