Opening and registration The Regional Workshop for Central Africa on Updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans will be held in Brazzaville, Congo from Sunday, 19 to Thursday, 23 June The workshop will start at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, 19 June 2011, and registration will take place at the venue of the workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. the same day. 2. Venue The workshop will be held at: Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et de la Coopération 5th Floor, Room 515 (in front of the Palais des Congrès) Alfred Raoul Boulevard Brazzaville, Congo 3. Working language of the workshop The workshop will be held in French with interpretation into English. 4. Documents Participants are kindly reminded to bring their own copies of the pre-session documents for the workshop as there will be no extra copies made available on site during the workshop. Pre-session documents are available on the Secretariat s web site at: 5. General information on access to Brazzaville, Congo Brazzaville is serviced by the Brazzaville - Maya Maya Airport (about 5 km from the city centre) and the journey takes about minutes. Please note that there is a departure tax for international travellers. Taxis are available at the arrivals level at a cost of about XAF 2, /US $5 by day and the cost is double at night. 6. Visa information Participants require an entry visa for the Republic of Congo and are strongly advised to contact the nearest Congolese diplomatic or consular mission as soon as possible in order to secure the required entry visa in a timely manner, prior to departure. Some airlines will not allow boarding without a valid visa. Information on visa procedures is listed below. General requirements to obtain a visa for the Republic of Congo: 1. Passport valid at least 6 months; 2. Ticket and documents for return or onward travel; 3. Vaccination; 2

International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever required if arriving form infected area within 5 days; 5. 2 visa application forms, fully completed and signed; 6. 2 passport size photos. A list of relevant Congolese diplomatic/consular missions abroad is available at the following web site: To facilitate the issuance of visas, the Secretariat will issue upon request invitation letters to be attached to the visa applications. 7. Health information A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age. There is a risk of Malaria that exists throughout the year in the whole country. For more information, please consult a medical professional with regard to the vaccination requirements for your travel. 8. Hotel information Participants are kindly requested to make their own hotel bookings. A list of hotels located in the vicinity of the meeting venue is attached as Annex A. 9. Payment of the Daily Subsistence Allowances (DSA) The relevant residual DSA will be paid to the sponsored participants on the first day of the workshop. 10. Official language in Republic of Congo The official language in the Republic of Congo is French. English is spoken in some hotels and restaurants. 11. Weather and time zone information In June, temperatures in Brazzaville averages about +23 C. The dry season is from June to October. Current weather conditions can be found at: The standard time zone is GMT/UTC + 1 hour. 3
4 12. Electricity The electrical currents are 230 Volts, 50 Hertz. The power plug used in Congo is shown below. 13. Currency The currency in the Republic of Congo is the Central African Franc (CFA franc) (XAF). The current exchange rate as at 7 June 2011 is US $1.00 = CFA Franc and 1 = CFA Franc. 14. Disclaimer The CBD Secretariat disclaims all responsibility for medical, accident and travel insurance, for compensation for death or disability compensation, for loss of or damage to personal property and for any other loss that may be incurred during travel time or the period of participation.
