1 HISD Elementary Summer School Curriculum 2013 Elementary School Content Area English/Language Arts Recommended Summer School Curriculum HISD Curriculum Planning Guides for Grades 1-5 are based on the identified content/skills in which students show a need for support based on District Level Assessment data and/or trend data from STAAR, Stanford, and TPRI/Tejas LEE. Materials to support TPRI/Tejas LEE instructional activities can be ordered through Printing Services. See the Curriculum web site for details. The High Frequency Word Evaluation will be administered to first and second grade students who did not meet this promotion standard in April. The HFWE Handbook may be reordered through the HISD Printing Services department or printed at the campus. Additional Reading instructional support materials are available on the Curriculum web site. There is a pre- and post-assessment for each grade level based on the standards defined in the summer school curriculum planning guide. Additional Elementary School Summer Programs Pre-K/Kindergarten ELL Reading/Language Arts Mathematics HISD Curriculum Planning Guides for ELL Pre-K/Kindergarten students focus on reading and mathematics skills based on identified content/skills in which students show a need for support as indicated on the EOY Frog Street Pre-K assessments and Kindergarten TPRI/Tejas LEE. Planning guides include resources and materials to use for instruction. Teachers who attend the required training for this program will receive materials to support this curriculum. Additional copies of the printed materials may be ordered through the HISD Printing Services department. STAAR EOC results from May 2013 will serve as a pre-assessment, and the STAAR EOC retest results from July 2013 will serve as a post-assessment. STAAR EOC results from May 2013 will serve as a pre-assessment, and the STAAR EOC retest results from July 2013 will serve as a post-assessment. HISD Curriculum Planning Guides based on key STAAR standards to help students who were not successful on the STAAR World Geography or World History EOC assessment(s) master content and skills necessary to perform at the acceptable level on the STAAR EOC World Geography Studies or World History Studies retest. Each unit contains a general outline for daily lessons and an end-of-unit assessment. STAAR EOC results from May 2013 will serve as a pre-assessment, and the STAAR EOC retest results from July 2013 will serve as a post-assessment. Page 2 of 2
3 HOUSTON ISD SUMMER SCHOOL PLANNING FLOW CHART 2013 PROGRAM 1. Pre-Assessment Administer content-area preassessment(s) only for the content area(s) in which the student needs additional support (i.e., reason for summer school attendance). 6. Monitoring / Re-evaluation Monitor progress of individual students to ensure that learning gaps are appropriately addressed using teacherdeveloped formative assessments and resources in the planning guides. 7. Adjust / Regroup Adjust instruction and regroup students as needed to ensure that students' learning gaps are addressed with effective instruction. 2. Data Disaggregation Review Student Cumulative Learning Profiles, pre-assessment results, students' self-analysis/reflection forms, and other student performance data to determine individual student needs and flexible student groups. 5. Instructional Planning & Delivery Develop mini-lessons and work station activities by TEKS/Student Expectations to target specific needs based on data disaggregation. 8. Post-Assessment Administer post-assessment(s) for every pre-assessment given. 3. Summer School Instructional Planning Guides Review the summer school planning guide(s) for the appropriate grade and content area(s) to identify instructional considerations, strategies, and resources for instructional delivery. 4. Lesson Planning Use appropriate strategies and resources from the planning guides to develop lessons that target the identified TEKS/Student Expectations for individual students. 9. Follow-up Complete a Cumulative Learning Profile for each student to be delivered to his or her teacher in the fall. See Summer School Handbook for additional information regarding Summer School Promotion Standards (requires login; contact HISD elearn Technical Support if you do not know your password). NOTE: Teacher is responsible for documenting instruction for 2013 summer school session on GradeSpeed. The pre- and post-assessments serve as one piece of evidence in the body of student work accomplished in the summer session.

9 Summer School Document Access Guide This guide will walk you through the process of accessing summer school documents, such as instructional planning guides, assessment blueprints, High Frequency Word Evaluation resources, and pre- and post-assessments, through HISD s Curriculum portal, elearn portal, and Principals Curriculum SharePoint site. 11 2013 SUMMER SCHOOL TRAININGS FOR TEACHERS CURRICULUM TRAINING Prospective HISD Summer School teachers will be expected to complete the Summer School Curriculum & Instruction Training for Teachers (3 hours) as a requirement for employment in summer Training stipends ($50) will be provided for the 3 hour sessions, as applicable. Teachers will register via etrain to attend. NOTE: Summer School Teacher priority hiring will begin with teachers who complete the May 4 and 11 training sessions. Additional sessions will be opened, as needed. Attendees will also receive training on supporting summer school teachers in using EdPlan. Attendees should bring a fully-charged HISD laptop to the training.
