1 LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MEMORANDUM TITLE: NUMBER: MEM ISSUER: DATE: June 15, 2015 Summer 2015 Professional Develoent for Special Education Teachers of Students on the Core Curriculum ROUTING All Schools Local District Superintendents Local District Administrations of Instruction Instructional Directors School Site Administrators Special Education Teachers PURPOSE: MAJOR CHANGES: BACKGROUND: WORKSHOP INFORMATION: The purpose of this Memorandum is to notify special education teachers of students with mild to moderate disabilities on the core curriculum of professional develoent classes being offered during Summer Not applicable. Aligned with the District s vision that all students have the skills to be Life-Ready, College-Prepared, and/or Career-Ready for the 21st Century, a series of professional learning workshops are being offered on a variety of topics that address supporting students with mild to moderate disabilities in meeting Common Core State Standards. Topics will include: best practices in IEP develoent and implementation aligned to Common Core State Standards, evidence-based practices for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and the use and implementation of supplemental English/Language Arts and Mathematics curricular resources and materials to support classroom instruction and improve student participation and success in the least restrictive environment. The series of professional learning workshops is designed to provide participants with curriculum resources, classroom strategies, and assessment tools to support the diverse learning abilities of students with mild to moderate disabilities in meeting the Common Core State Standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Additionally, IEP develoent workshops will provide participants with guidance and support on how to use student assessment data to develop IEPs that address student needs and identify appropriate goals and objectives aligned to Common Core State Standards. Teacher kits will be distributed at the training; consumable student books will be delivered to the school (renewable for ). Teachers may only attend one session, but can receive materials for all grade levels served. Teachers will be trained in the implementation of supplemental curriculum resources, online learning tools, and manipulatives designed to support students with disabilities in accessing these math courses. Teacher editions will be distributed at the training; consumable student books and manipulatives will be delivered to the school (renewable for the and school years). The workshop focuses on self-management interventions to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) learn how to regulate their behaviors independently and act appropriately in a variety of home, school, and communitybased situations. Self-management is an evidence-based practice recommended by the National Professional Develoent Center on Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) learn in a variety of different ways, but research has shown that they demonstrate strength in visual learning. This workshop will define visual supports, discuss how they might be used across settings, and provide specific examples that can be used to accommodate individuals with ASD. Visual supports organize a sequence of events, enhancing the student's ability to understand, anticipate, and participate in those events.
