4 VCE and VCAL Are you a young person looking to complete senior secondary school in an alternative setting, or are you mature age and would like to return to study? Our VCE or VCAL programs could be for you. VCE program The Gordon is Geelong s only alternative VCE provider, offering VCE in an adult learning environment without class bells or uniforms. If you are self-motivated and willing to take responsibility for your own learning, this could be a great option for you. Upon successful completion, students may obtain an ATAR for entry into tertiary studies. Geelong Technical Education Centre If you are aged 16 or over, have completed Year 10, and would like to get a head-start on your career as well as completing senior secondary studies, our VCAL program is perfect. This unique program is delivered through the Geelong Technical Education Centre (GTEC), offering a pathway from the world of school to the world of work. Our highly flexible program combines hands-on TAFE training and real work opportunities that are tailored to your career goals. In just two years you could receive: VCAL Intermediate and Senior certificates (equivalent to Year 11 and 12) Credits towards a Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology (CAD/drafting) A full Certificate II qualification OR the first two years of a Certificate III qualification (dependent on the chosen field) this can also reduce the educational component of a full apprenticeship or traineeship. PLUS: Work experience through Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) A possible School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) opportunity with an employer in your chosen field. 2 VCE and VCAL thegordon.edu.au

5 I had always wanted to complete my VCE and apply to university for a degree in criminology and criminal justice. I approached my mum and asked if we could find a place that provided VCE in an adult learning environment. We found The Gordon! I was so happy when school started and l made friends who were all similar to me and although only young, had experienced real life. My VCE group worked hard and formed friendships that allowed us to support each other and complete our VCE. The environment that the staff created was always supportive and welcoming. My teachers encouraged me to develop strong written communication skills as it is a skill l will need when l commence university. I have now been accepted into Griffith University to study criminology. My career goal is to one day work for a justice related agency supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Jarred Basaraba VCE Year 12, 2015 I m currently completing my senior VCAL alongside a Certificate III in Companion Animal Studies at GTEC. I chose to study here as mainstream school wasn t the right fit for me, and I wanted to learn in a hands-on way. The teachers at GTEC and within Animal Studies are all great. They treat you like a person rather than a student and are there to support your learning. As part of my course, I completed work experience at PetStock in Corio and am now completing a traineeship with them. In this industry, you need to learn to identify problems with animals, keep an eye out for different behaviours, make them comfortable, as well as have knowledge of nutrition and anatomy. I love working with animals and am looking forward to continuing my career in this field. Emilia La Spada VCAL and Certificate III in Companion Animal Studies, 2016 #thegordon
