OUR MENTORING AND SUPPORT The School of Education has a range of support programs and personnel to enable you to successfully complete your degree. These programs are designed to give our students support to build connections with peers, academic staff and professional educators. UOW Education students are also supported by its Careers Consultant, who provides targeted services and support to increase employability and graduate outcomes. 4. OUR INVESTMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY The School of Education has very strong community ties with schools from all sectors. We regularly work with schools from Sutherland to the Victorian border and south west to the Southern Highlands as well as areas in the west of NSW. This means you can also get involved with the community. You can do this through service learning within specific subjects, being a mentor through the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience or involving yourself in a range of community activities promoted by the School of Education. 5. OUR GRADUATES We have a great record of graduate satisfaction and our graduates are highly regarded and valued by future employers. The School of Education run Alumni Mentored Interviews for final year Education students in preparation for their compulsory Department of Education and Communities (DEC) interviews for their teaching accreditation. The program is unique to UOW. ii 1

3 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE The Master of Teaching Program provides a professional course of pre-service education for aspiring school teachers. The program combines the practical and theoretical elements of teaching with professional experience in schools. Underpinning and integrated with the professional experience are curriculum studies and the foundation disciplines of education. In the final session of study, pre-service teachers will take part in our mentored interview program, which prepares pre-service teachers for their interview with the Department of Education and Communities (DEC). ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: APPLICATION PROCESS All students applying for Master of Teaching MUST have a School of Education assessment of eligibility before 30 June prior to the year of commencement. Please refer to School of Education website for the Master of Teaching application procedure ( socialsciences.uow.edu.au/education/courses/index.html) RECORD CHECK All students enrolling will be required to complete the new online Working with Children Check at and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY INTO THE PROGRAM: Test Required overall and individual band scores Overall Score Reading Writing Listening Speaking IELTS (Academic) TOEFL (Internetbased) UOW College English for Tertiary Studies Distinction Not applicable Effectively communicating with your students, colleagues and the wider school community is one of the most important professional standards for teachers. If you have completed tertiary studies that make you eligible for accreditation as a teacher in NSW from a country other than the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, the United States of America, New Zealand or Canada, you are required to successfully complete an approved English language proficiency test to be eligible for NSW teacher accreditation with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES). 4 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching (Primary & Secondary) courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in this course can meet the professional expectations of working in schools and are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts e.g. school sites. It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of UOW. The Master of Teaching (Primary & Secondary) provides students with more than 73 days of professional experience. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & PROFESSIONAL SERVICE SUMMARY: Year/Session Type of Experience No. of Days Yr. 1/ S.1 Immersion Program 15 days Yr. 1 /S.1 *Initial PEX 15 days Yr. 1/ S.2 * Minor PEX 15 days Yr.2 /S.1 Professional Service (Non PEX placement) 15 hours (3 days) Yr. 2 /S. 2 Major PEX 25 days * Placement in the same school COURSE OUTCOMES AND RATIONALE The structure of the program seeks to combine the practical and theoretical elements of teaching by engaging students in professional aspects, including KLA work and classroom practice, from the beginning of the course. Underpinning and integrated with the professional aspects are curriculum studies and the foundation disciplines of education. Each component is intended to contribute to the development of concepts and skills relating to an understanding of, and competence in, teaching. It is expected that prospective teachers will develop as autonomous professionals who will be competent, innovative, and capable of contributing to the formulation of curriculum in schools and committed to their own continuous professional growth. PROGRAM FEATURES INCLUDE: Professional learning workshops run throughout the program and integrated into pedagogical subjects. These workshops supplement the core material presented in the subjects and aim to provide practical, hands-on experiences, often with guest facilitators. The program finishes with a hands on action research project. Professional Immersion Program (PIP) begins in session one, with pre-service teachers placed in hub schools for an introduction to the profession. PIP aims to strengthen links between the university and partner schools and also build connections between pre-service teachers and school staff. The program engages pre-service teachers in observation of classes and conversation with school staff which ties in to the material presented in EDMT901. A blended delivery model utilises modern educational technologies and practices to support students and staff. The degree includes traditional lecture/tutorial sequences, computer lab based and practical workshops, online content delivery, after school hours classes, and block intensives to deliver material in an appropriate manner ICT theory and practices are integrated throughout the program. Subjects were designed in consultation with the UOW ICT teaching team to ensure increasing sophistication in the knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills in the use of ICT in the classroom. The degree is designed to include integrated sessional activities and themes. Content is linked across subjects to provide pre-service teachers with an holistic and meaningful understanding of the key elements of the profession. This is most strongly seen in session three where a unit of work is devised, drawing on knowledge and skills from across the four subjects. 4 5

Each subject is worth credit points, which is equivalent to one eighth of a year of study. Subjects have been designed to complement and broaden understanding of the profession so students can develop the skills, knowledge and understandings required to teach in increasingly sophisticated ways. The Master of Teaching (Primary) by its nature is focused on the workplace both locally and internationally through its professional experience placements (in Australia and abroad) and other classroom based activity. Research is at the foundation of classroom teaching, and we have developed a comprehensive plan to develop a systematic approach to teaching the skills and strategies of conducting research. SECONDARY TEACHING METHODS Master of Teaching (Secondary) students can qualify in either ONE DOUBLE method or in TWO SINGLE methods. DOUBLE METHODS to enrol in a double method, students must have a MAJOR in the area they wish to teach. The requirements for a major are defined by BOSTES subject content requirements.
