Laboratory exercises include detailed dissection of the Lamprey eel, the dogfish shark, the mud puppy, the cat and other animals. TEXTBOOK: Comparative Anatomy of the Vertebrates, Kent, George, C.V. Mosby Co., 9th Edition. ISBN LABORATORY MANUAL: Atlas and Dissection Guide for Comparative Anatomy, Wischinitzer, Saul, W. H. Freeman Co. Publisher, 6th. 3 The phylum chordata, the vertebrate body - general plan and Vertebrate characteristics - big four and satellite. 2 Protochordates and the Origin of Vertebrates: 3 Protochordates, the origin of vertebrates, the ammocoete and an alternate theory of ammocoete-protochordate relationships. 3 Parade of the Vertebrates: 4 Vertebrate taxa, Agnatha, chondrichthyes, osteichthyes, amphibia, reptilia, aves and mammals. 4 Integument: 6 The epidermis, the dermis and dermal induction. The integument from fishes to mammals. 5 An Introduction to the Skeleton: 7 Bone, Cartilage, Tendons, Ligaments and Joints, regional components of the skeleton and Heterotopic Bones. 6 Skull and Visceral Skeleton: 9 The neurocranium, the generalized dermatocranium, the neurocranial complex - bony fishes and tetrapools and the visceral skeleton. 7 Vertebrae, Ribs and Sterna: 8 The vertebral column, Ribs and Tetrapod sternum. 8 Girdles, Fins, Limbs and Locomotion: 10 Pectoral girdles, pelvic girdles, fins and tetrapod limbs. 9 Muscles: 11 Muscles Tissue, introduction to skeletal muscles. Axial, appendicular, branchiomeric and integumentary muscles. Electric organs. 10 Digestive System: 12 The digestive tract, mouth and oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestine, liver, pancreas and cloaca. 11 Respiratory System: 13 Gills, Nares and Nasal canals, Swim bladder, lungs and their ducts. 12 Circulatory System: 14 Blood, the heart of fishes, lung fishes, amphibians and amniotes. Arterial channels, Venus channels and Lymphatic system. 13 Nervous System: 16 Spinal cord and spinal nerves and Brain and cranial nerves 14 Sense Organs: 17 Special somatic receptors and special visceral receptors. 15 Urogenital System: 15 Kidneys and their ducts, Urinary bladders, Genital organs and the cloaca. Other % TOTAL % NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ABOVE SEQUENCE BUT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITH THE INSTRUCTOR'S NOTICE. CLASS PROTOCOL Make-up Testing: Any student who misses an exam without prior arangements will be required to take a cumulative final at the end of the semester to replace the missed grade. Any missed lab quiz will result in a zero unless prior argangments have been made. In either case if an exam or quiz is missed due to an emergency a make-up will be permited if the student can provide WRITTEN documentation to confirm the nature of the emergency and the missed work must be made-up within one week. Once the first student has left the exam NO students will be allowed to start the exam. Grading scheme: A 90% - 100% B+ 87% % B 80% % C+ 77% % C 70% % D 60% % F 0% % Student and faculty support services: 1. Students experiencing difficulty with this course should acquaint themselves with the services of the Tutoring Center and Smarthinking. 2. The BCC Library provides extensive support services for student research. 3. Faculty office hours may be a productive vehicle for assistance in understanding the course material. 4. A wide variety of services are available to students with documented disabilities through the Office of Specialized Services (OSS). It is highly recommended that students with documented disabilities contact OSS (Room S-153; ) or at during the college application process Class Assignments Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made. Class Attendance: There is no attendance policy for lecture classes. Success in class is related to attendance and it is hoped that the students will attend classes. If you miss a class it is YOUR responsibilty to find out what you missed either from a classmate or from me. Absence is no excuse. Lab Attendance: If you find it necessary to miss a laboratory meeting, you should make arrangements, upon your return to school, to make up the laboratory class. There is no make-up for missed quizzes unless prior arrangements have been made. If you miss a Lab it is YOUR responsibilty to find out what you missed either from a classmate or from me. 5 Lateness: Lateness to class or lab sometimes cannot be avoided. Continued lateness is frowned upon. Smoking Policy: As of January 1, 2008, Bergen Community College is smoke free campus, which means that you will have to give yourself and the others around you lung cancer and emphysema off campus, plus you won t smell so bad. Eating & Drinking: Eating and drinking in the classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories and passageways is forbidden. Eating and drinking are permitted in the cafeteria and vending areas only. Faculty Absence: If a class finds the instructor is absent, a class representative should report to Divisional Office(S-131) or the evening office (L-113) after ten minutes of the period have elapsed. The class should remain until the representative returns with instructions. If class has been cancelled whatever we were going to do that day will be done at the next meeting time and the students should sign in and slip the sign in sheet under my door S-232 Laboratory Safety: Your laboratory instructor will review safety precautions prior to each laboratory session. Careful adherence to these precautions is essential in order to prevent injury to yourself or to others working around you.
