Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscle, special senses and nervous systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their

2 interrelationships. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement. This course may meet the SACS natural science requirement for AGE, AAS, DIP, or CER programs. This is a college transfer course and will be taught at the college/university level. Course Topics: Topics and systems covered in this course are: Body organization * Skeletal system Homeostasis * Muscular system Cytology * Nervous system Histology * Special senses Integumentary system Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to 1) Demonstrate understanding of terminology and basic structure and function of the body systems covered in the course. 2) Apply the correct terminology, anatomy and physiology of the system covered. 3) Explain concepts using appropriate written communication skills. Assessment of learning will be based upon multiple-choice and short answer exams in lecture, written answers to case studies, and timed practical exams in lab using ppts, slides, models and preserved specimens. Access to a computer with internet connection and Microsoft Office software If you do not have your own computer, you will need to fill out a permission slip to use the computers in the N407 Science Study Room. 3. One 3-ring binder & one package of colored pencils 4. Disposable gloves

3 Grading Policy: Your final grade will be the average of your lectures & lab grades. Quizzes, homework and / or any other assignments in lecture and lab will be added together to total an additional test. A missed exam will be counted as a zero (see make-up policy). Your grades will be posted on Blackboard. The 8-point CFCC grade scale is as follows: A B C D F 67-0 *WP withdraw passing (not computed into GPA) *WF withdraw failing (computed as an F ) *I Incomplete (paperwork required Refer to the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook) Extra Credit: There will be no individual extra credit. Any extra credit will be given to all students in the form of additional questions on the tests. Attendance: College instruction is designed for students to learn by way of class attendance, and regular attendance is key to academic success. Attendance is based on class meetings and calculated from the first class meeting, not based on when the student enrolls in the class. Within their respective departmental guidelines, instructors are responsible for stating their own course attendance and tardiness requirements on course syllabi distributed at the beginning of the academic term. (CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook) A student must attend 80% of the total scheduled class hours in order to receive credit for the course. Since BIO 168 is a 96-hour course, if you miss more than 18 hours - not 18 class meetings, you will receive an F. These hours include both lecture and lab hours. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every lecture and lab class. You will be responsible for signing the attendance sheets for both lecture and lab. Failure to sign in will result in an absence. I FORGOT IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE! Under no circumstances can you sign in for another student.

4 If a student leaves any time after roll has been called and fails to come back, or even comes back later, then they are subject to the attendance policy explained below. An absence is defined as any absence from either lecture or lab in full or in part by 30 minutes or more. A tardy will be assessed when a student fails to be in class on time or within 5 minutes OR if a student leaves lecture or lab early. Two tardies = one absence There are NO excused tardies or absences! If your work schedule, family commitments, or health issues prevent you from attending class on a regular basis, a withdrawal is recommended. Make-up Policy One make-up test for the lecture AND one make-up test for the lab component of the course is allowed for an absence due to a valid, documented reason. If a make-up test is allowed, the test will be given during my (Smoots or Uguccioni) office hours. There will be an automatic 10% grade deduction every class meeting until the test is taken. Any lecture test not taken within one week of the scheduled date will be graded as a zero. The format of the make-up is variable and may consist solely of one type of question or any combination of question types. You are allowed to take one test early during my office hours. The final exam, if given, must be taken on the scheduled date. A lab exam may be taken in another lab at the discretion of the instructor, only IF there is room in that section. Withdrawals You are responsible for noting the deadline for withdrawal from the course and following the E-Withdrawal Procedure. Student Expectations for Interaction: Students will be held to the highest standards of language and content in all interaction, whether online or in person. Abusive and derogatory language, actions, or content will not be tolerated. This non-

Academic Honesty CFCC requires of students complete academic honesty in the completion of all assigned work. The discipline policy for academic dishonesty can be found in the CFCC Catalog & Student Handbook. If cheating is found, the student will receive a grade of zero ( O ) on the assignment or test. SMOKING on CAMPUS Tobacco use is prohibited on all CFCC property, except in designated areas. If a student is found smoking on the campus outside of the designated area, the first offense is a warning and the second offense may result in disciplinary action. NO CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children cannot be taken into classrooms, laboratories or shops unless authorized by College personnel. Children can not be left unattended on campus including the Learning Resource Center, the cafeteria, lounge areas, registration sites, administrative offices or parking lots. Failure to comply with this policy will lead to disciplinary action. IT Student HelpDesk The IT Services Student Helpdesk provides first-level technical support to all students of Cape Fear Community College. They are available to assist students with basic computer and technical needs, including logging into Blackboard, mycfcc and WebAdvisor. 6 Science Learning Lab The Science Learning Lab is located in N-407. Tutors are available for all Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Physic courses. You must have your instructor sign a form to verify that you are enrolled in a Science course. You can pick up that form in N-407.at CFCC can provide Writing Assistance, Computer Competency Skills, and Tutoring. Learning Resource Center (LRC) The LRC is located in the CFCC library and can be found online at The LRC provides writing assistance, computer competency skills and tutoring. Learning Resource Center (Library) The CFCC Learning Resource Center (Library) provides students with the following resources: Books/Materials, Course Reserves, Computer/Internet Access, Online Databases/Journals, Group Study Space, and a Quiet Study Space. The Learning Resource Center (Library) is located on the 2nd Floor of the L-Building (Downtown Campus) or on the 1st Floor of the McKeithan Center (North Campus) and can be found online at Student Accounts Every student has an official CFCC-provided account which is to be used for all correspondence with your instructors and with the CFCC staff. Some information from CFCC will ONLY be ed to this address, and not sent through postal mail as in the past, so it is very important that you check your account periodically. To access this account, please visit the CFCC website cfcc.edu and click on the mycfcc link; then follow the instructions to log in. Your address is This account is for your use while you are attending classes and will still remain active after you leave the college. Your account may be for personal as well as academic and is subject to the CFCC Acceptable Use Policy.

7 Students With Special Needs: Students with a documented disability or needing reasonable accommodation in this course (such as extended testing time), must register with the Office of Disability Services in Student Services at the Downtown Campus, U218 ( / 7158). Students are required to provide the instructor a copy of the Accommodation Letter as soon as possible preferably by the end of the first week of classes. You should then meet with me to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accommodation Letter. Contingency Plan: If there is an emergency and I or an appropriate substitute does not meet with the class, wait fifteen minutes. Then, everyone in the class should sign a roll sheet and designate someone to take it to the Department Chair or Secretary in U436. Please look for an announcement on Blackboard for assignments. Additional Class Information: 1. Frequent the course BB site for announcements. 2. When ing me, please use the campus . Place BIO 168 in the Subject Line. I monitor my throughout the week but not on weekends. 3. Personal Electronic Devices: Please set cell phones, pagers, etc on SILENT mode during lecture and lab and do not text or read text messages during class hours. No taping is allowed during lecture or labs. 4 Test dates will be announced at least one week prior to testing. 5. All tests will be turned in with your answer keys at the end of testing. Only your answer keys will be returned to you upon grading. 6. Most of our lab work will be working on skeletons, models, diagrams, and computers. However, there will be some dissection. We will follow strict laboratory safety procedures when dissecting and performing experiments. Detailed instructions will be given prior to these labs. 7. No children are allowed in the lecture hall or labs. 8. No Medical Advice: The Anatomy & Physiology Instructors on staff at CFCC are educational instructors, not licensed physicians. Individual health questions discussed in class are from an educational perspective only. See your doctor for medical consultations.

LECTURE TEST (Test 3) - Chapter 6 Bone Tissue LAB TEST (Test 4)- Chapter 7 (The Skeleton)/10 (Muscular System) Bones and Muscles (some nerves) of the Axial Skeleton LECTURE TEST (Test 5) - Chapter 9 Muscle Tissue LAB TEST (Test 6) Chapter 7 (The Skeleton)/10 (Muscular System) Bones and Muscles (some nerves) of the Appendicular Skeleton LECTURE TEST (Test 7) - Chapter 11 Nervous System Chapter 12 CNS Chapter 13/14 PNS and ANS LAB TEST (Test 8) Chapter 12 (Brain Anatomy), 15 (Eye Anatomy) FINAL - An optional final exam may be given at the discretion of the instructor.
