1 BIOLOGY 203 HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Karen K. McLellan, M. S., Course Coordinator Spring Semester, Lecture Times: T/R 9:00 10:15 AM in LA159 T/R 10:30-11:45 AM in LA 159 Textbook: Seeley s Anatomy and Physiology, ninth edition, Cinnamon VanPutte, Jennifer Regan, and Andrew Russo Supplements: Human Anatomy and Physiology Biology 203 Lecture Notebook , Marilyn M. Shannon Laboratory Guide for Biology 203 Human Anatomy and Physiology , Marilyn M. Shannon Optional: Anatomy and Physiology Revealed CD s. Introduction: Biology 203 is the first semester of a two-semester introduction to the structure and function of the human body. The Lecture The lectures emphasize the physiology (function) of the body. Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course. Recitation The recitation portion of the course is integrated into the lecture. Critical thinking skills will be developed as relationships between structure and function are examined. The Laboratory The laboratory will emphasize anatomy, giving you hands-on experience with a variety of anatomical models and preserved specimens. Course Web Site Scan the QR code with your smart phone and bookmark the course web site or enter directly to your web browser. Biology 203 Page 1

2 Tests: There will be four lecture exams, two laboratory practical exams, and eight lab quizzes scheduled during the semester. Lecture Exams: Each of the one hour lecture exams will contain 50 multiple-choice questions and will be worth 100 points. The final lecture exam will not be cumulative. Lab Practicals: The two 60-item practicals will test your ability to recognize and name anatomical structures. Lab Quizzes: Eight 8-item lab quizzes are scheduled during the semester, four before the first practical and four after the first practical. Each will cover material from the previous week. Your lowest lab quiz score from each half of the semester will be dropped so that you can earn a total of 48 points from the lab quizzes. You may take a quiz only in the lab for which you are registered. There are no make-ups for laboratory quizzes. Make-up Exam Policy: Lecture exams: A limited number of make-up exams may be given due to extenuating circumstances on an individual basis. If you must miss an exam due to a university sponsored event (i.e. athletics), you must notify me one week prior to the exam so alternative arrangements can be made. If you miss an exam due to an unpredicted situation (i.e. illness, family crisis, or emergency), you must contact me before the time of the exam via . If more than one test or practical is missed, make-up test arrangements for a second make-up will require the Biology Chair s approval, and you must provide evidence of extenuating circumstances for both missed tests. The large number of students in this course makes individual make-up tests impossible. Make-ups for all missed exams will be given Tuesday, April 17 or Thursday, April 19. Lab practicals: Lab practicals need to be taken the same week they are scheduled, if they cannot be taken at the assigned time. Due to the lab space and time required to provide these tests, an incomplete grade will be the only option offered for make-up lab practicals after the week of the scheduled practical. Lab Quizzes: No make-ups are permitted for lab quizzes, even in another lab class during the same week it is scheduled. Any lab quiz not taken at the scheduled time will result in score of 0. However, your lowest lab score for each half of the semester will be dropped. Biology 203 Page 2

3 Grading Policy: There is a single grade given for the course. Final grades are determined primarily by the total points accumulated. Lecture Exam Lecture Exam Lecture Exam Lecture Exam Lab Practical Lab Practical Lab Quizzes 48 Total Possible Points 648 Grading Scale A % B % C 70 79% D 60 69% F <60% Points Needed pts pts pts pts <389 pts Last Day to Withdraw from Class and Credit to Audit Deadline - March 16, 2012 March 16, 2012 is the last day you can withdraw from classes or change to a grade of Audit. If circumstances arise causing you to discontinue the class, you must go through official withdrawal procedures (submit a drop/add form to the Registrar s Office) or drop your class through OASIS. Failing to submit this form will result in F grades for courses not completed. Academic Dishonesty: Academic Dishonesty, whether giving or receiving test information, will result in a failing grade for the course. Note: The IPFW Student Handbook states that when such events occur, the students major department chair and the dean of their school must receive a letter concerning the incident, and the students may be dropped from their program. Instructor s Office Hours: Office Hours: Tuesday 8:00 8:45 AM Thursday 8:00 8:45 AM also by appointment Office: Science Building (SB) 378 Office Telephone: (Voice mail may be left at any time.) 4 Additional Help: Below is a list of resources that are available to help you succeed in this course. Biology 203/204 Website: 1. Cumulative grades may be accessed. The website also contains back-up copies of the course syllabus, powerpoint illustrations and animations, links to the textbook web site, links to back-up copies of the course Notebook and Lab Guide and photographs of the lab models. Lecture Help: 1. Lecture Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring Weekly help sessions are scheduled through CASA (Center for Academic Support and Advancement) and are available to all students at no cost. These sessions are conducted by student leaders who have recently completed the course successfully. Lecture SI times will be announced. Individual tutoring is available at no cost through CASA - The Learning Center in Kettler G21. You are entitled to 2 free hours per week of one-to-one tutoring. Make all appointments online through TutorTrac at ipfw.edu/casa. Questions? Call Lecture Study Organizer The lecture study organizer recommends chapter questions that are useful in preparing for lecture exams. Lecture study organizers may be downloaded from the class web site at any time. 3. Practice Lecture Test Questions A handout with sample lecture test questions will be provided before each lecture exam. These are not available on the web. 4. Attending and Recording Lecture Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course. Students often feel that audio taping the lecture is helpful. Lab Help: 1. Lab Supplemental Instruction (Open Lab) These labs are open to all Biology 203/204 students, and will be held weekly, except the first week of class and during weeks in which a lab practical is scheduled. Open labs provide additional study time and are supervised by a qualified student leader. Times will be announced in class and posted on the class web site. 2. Sample lab practical questions Lab practical questions will be set up during the review labs prior to each lab practical so that you may be better prepared for the practical. Biology 203 Page 4

5 DISABILITIES STATEMENT: If you have a disability and need assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. Contact the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities (Walb, room 113, telephone number ), as soon as possible to work out the details. Once the Director has provided you with a letter attesting to your needs for modification, bring the letter to me. For more information, please visit the web site for SSD at Biology 203 Laboratory Class times and Instructors: All lab classes meet in SB 377. University policy prohibits students from attending a lab for which they are not registered, unless they have permission of the laboratory instructor. If you must miss a lab, use the following information to arrange for a make-up. Missed lab quizzes may not be made-up or taken in another lab under any circumstances. Section/Lab Time Instructor -03 T 10:30 am - 12:20 pm Liz Syster-Clevenger -04 T 12:30 pm - 2:20 pm Karen McLellan -05 T 2:30 pm - 4:20 pm Kevin Ann Hunt -06 T 4:30 pm - 6:20 pm Liz Syster-Clevenger -07 W 1:30 pm - 3:20 pm Bryan Eads -08 W 3:30 pm- 5:20 pm Evin Carter -09 W 5:30 pm- 7:20 pm Evin Carter -10 R 8:30 am 10:20 am Tiffany Hough -11 R 12:30 pm- 2:20 pm Tiffany Hough -12 R 2:30 pm- 4:20 pm Kevin Ann Hunt -13 R 4:30 pm- 6:20 pm Ryan Hunt 3-Digit I.D. Number and Assigned Seat Number for Exams: Each student will be assigned a three digit number to use on all exams and quizzes. All grades will be recorded and posted using this private number. It is important to remember your 3-digit number and darken it in on every test answer sheet. You may record your 3 digit I.D. number here: All students will be given an assigned seat for taking lecture exams. You may record your seat number here: There will also be assigned seating for lab practicals. Weather Cancellations: Decisions to cancel classes due to weather are made by the administrators of the university, not by your instructor. If you think IPFW may have declared an adverse weather closing, listen to local radio or television announcements (including CATV (Comcast Channel 5 or Verizon FiOS Channel 30), go to (a notice will appear at the top of the page), or call the campus weather emergency number, or , for a recorded message. Any cancelled exam will be held during the next class meeting; any exam scheduled the class after a cancellation will be postponed one class. Biology 203 Page 5
