1 // The First Berlin Festival of Lights Competition 2015 INTERNATIONAL PROJECTION MAPPING COMPETITION CALL FOR ENTRIES OUTLINE OF THE COMPETITION 9th 18th October 2015, Berlin, Brandenburg Gate For over ten years, the Berlin FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS brings light into the autumn darkness: local, national and international artists and creatives turn the German capital into a glowing city of light and art. Unlike other light festivals, the Berlin FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS is a private initiative, stays independent and doesn t achieve any financial support from the city or country. The festival is based on a cultural and social entrepreneurship and the budget comes only from sponspors. The Berlin FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS will present high technical and artistic quality and outstanding art. Its products are storytelling and full of content. The FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS connects people and places, art and creatives and has also an eye for hidden and special things. With over two million visitors and more than one billion media contacts it is one of the best-known light art projects in the world. The Berlin FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS 2015 will take place from 9th 18th October Premiere: The First BERLIN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS projection mapping competition at the Brandenburg Gate In the International year of Light, we are proud to announce the BERLIN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Award in 2015 for the first time. We will prize outstanding, creative and innovative video mappings and art works. We want to show the breathtaking possibilities of video art, the newest and most impressive technology and the inexhaustible creativity of artists from all over the world. The six winner mappings will be shown during the whole festival for 10 nights, 5 hours per night. Additionally, we will ask the audience to vote online for their favorite piece of art. The award will be rewarded with prize money. 2014: Ode to joy :

2 THEMES // New Dimensions New Dimensions on the Brandenburg Gate There is no building which fits better. Especially in 2015, the 25th anniversary of the German Reunification, the Brandenburg Gate today a symbol for freedom and unity shows us how time, history, art, culture and symbols enter New Dimensions over and over again. We want to present New Dimensions: technical, artistic, contentual and visual on this historic facade. Your mapping should contain and consider one or several of these themes: Science / Digital world Nature / Sustainability Art / Culture Alliance / Networking and your vision of the future // Vision of Energy This competition has the claim to make energy visible. 3D Videomapping is the perfect tool to show the complexity, the range and the indispensability of energy in all its facets. 3 TECHNICAL INFORMATION Resolution: 3025x1200 Frame rate: 25fps Duration of the animation: 3min File format: Quicktime.mov (Compression: 75% PhotoJPG, Sound: AAC) 2D Reference pictures and 3D model of the facade will be sent to the chosen participants. The content of your animations will be projected onto the facade with 2x2 Panasonic PT-DZ21KE projectors. Technical compliance with the provided specifications is mandatory. SUBMISSION The filled application Portfolio/References Description of concept Visualizations of your concept With the submission the participants are confirming that the appropriate technique is available for producing the animation according to the requirements in the Technical Information above. The participants will be notified until 10 th of August 2015.

This audience-prize is without prize money. Every application will be confirmed by mail. Further benefits for the chosen teams: Extensive presentation in the official FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS media (i.e. homepage (special side about the winners), program, magazine) Featured in the international PR and social media of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Invitation to a press conference and the opening of the festival (9 th October) Every winner will receive an award JURY The participants will be juried by a professional panel of judges, who are either distinguished experts and prominent representatives of visual culture (from the field of arts, visual communications, media, film, etc.), sponsors of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS or representatives from the City of Berlin ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY FEE Entry is free of charge. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION The chosen artists can represent themselves by two persons whom the accommodation will be arranged.

5 Restrictions The competition is open to all natural and legal persons regardless of their profession, age, sex, citizenship or residence. People can enter the competition either individually or as a team. Natural persons under the age of 18 must obtain the prior consent of their legal guardian to enter the competition. When entering the competition as a team one person should be appointed as contact person who will solely be responsible for communication with the organizers. One person is allowed to join in only one team. The competition is open to both professionals and amateurs. Entrants can only enter the competition with their own, original work. In that case, anybody enters the competition with work other than that of their own, the entry will be rejected and the person will be disqualified immediately. Should it be discovered only after the competition, the entrant will be stripped of his/her honors and the prize will have to be returned. Upon completing the registration form entrants declare that the work submitted by them is their own intellectual property, and warrant that it does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party. The work submitted has to meet the requirements as set forth in the Technical information section. It is strictly forbidden to embed any real or fictitious advertisements in the work, either overtly or in a covert way, i.e. it is forbidden to feature any product, brand, name, logo or recognizable image, or text, etc. (with the exception of the inscription on the facade of the building), and/or any mark or symbol suggesting whose work it is. Furthermore any compromising, harming message such as politics, delinquency or pornography is prohibited. Entries that do not meet these requirements will be rejected automatically.

6 Copyright All validated entries will remain the property of the participants. By submitting their work, participants give their consent for said work or parts of it to be used at no charge for advertising and promotional activities. Examples of promotional activities may include press releases, public relations activities for the competition, Internet-related promotion, or articles, all free of charge. The organizer is not liable for any fees resulting from potential copyright infringements that result from the content of the animations submitted by the participants. Preconditions By submitting an entry for this competition, each contestant agrees to all the terms specified in this brief. CALENDAR/DEADLINES August 5: Call closed. August 6-10: Choosing the artists August 11 - September 25: The actual work on the animations. September 1: First preview from the artists September 25: All animations must be ready!
