The committee is seeking a sculptor to create a permanent sculpture to honor the life and accomplishments of writer Ray Bradbury. The committee is open to all submission ideas and has not definitively decided on a realistic, life sized likeness of Mr. Bradbury or a more abstract, conceptual piece and is therefore leaving that up to the creative process of each individual sculptor interested in the project. Sculptors are asked to submit qualifications for consideration by the Ray Bradbury Statue Committee. The Committee s Goals: To acquire the highest quality sculpture and establish a significant public art collection for the City of Waukegan To enrich the downtown of Waukegan for residents and visitors through this placement of public art To commission this piece of public art so that it is durable and able to withstand high-traffic, unmonitored outdoor environments with little maintenance 1

2 Project Description Raymond Douglas Ray Bradbury (August 22, 1920 June 5, 2012) was an American fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery fiction author. He is best known for his dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 and for the science fiction and horror stories gathered together as The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man. Bradbury was one of the most celebrated 20 th and 21 st century American genre authors. Bradbury was born and grew up in Waukegan from 1920 to As a young boy he was an avid reader and frequented the Carnegie Library a short distance from his home, reading such authors as H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Edgar Allen Poe. He also loved going to movies at the Genesee and Academy Theatres, both downtown Waukegan watching Lon Chaney s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and others. Ray loved Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan and Jon Carter of Mars, Buck Rogers, and Buck Rogers. After moving to Los Angeles in the spring of 1934, Ray became obsessed with stage, screen, and radio. He sold his first short story at the age of 22 and became a full-time writer by His more than 500 published works short stories, novels, plays, screenplays, television scripts, and verse have been translated into over 40 different languages and have sold millions worldwide. Green Town was a reinvention of Waukegan and featured in Dandelion Wine, Farewell Summer, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, and others. Besides being the backdrop of many of his stories, it was Ray s home. The RBSC would like to appropriately honor him and his connection to Waukegan. It inspired him and provided the impetus for his story craft and dedication to his art. To honor Ray, the Ray Bradbury Statue Committee was assembled to commission a sculpture with base to be placed in the proposed Waukegan Public Library Story Garden (see page 6). Parameters for the sculpture include: The sculptor is limited only by his/her own imagination for this piece Durable material, preferably bronze Base that would not detract from overall design The sculpture will serve as a landmark for the City of Waukegan much like the full-size, bronze statue of Jack Benny (also born in Waukegan) that sits on the corner of Clayton and Genesee Streets. It will be a meeting location, photography opportunity, and representation of the creativity of Waukegan s residents. 2

3 Sculptor Eligibility This opportunity is open to all professional sculptors with public art experience working in the United States. Sculptors living in the Upper Midwest or with ties to Waukegan are encouraged to apply. Selection Process All submissions will reviewed by the entire committee to ensure they are submitted timely and include all items requested. Incomplete or late submissions will not be reviewed The RBSC will review each complete submission and select up to three finalists based on materials submitted A maximum of three finalists will be asked to interview with a presentation to the committee. The final decision rests solely with the committee which will include the addition of some arts professionals with experience with public art projects The committee will consider the appropriateness of the sculptor s proposal for the site, excellence and innovation of the proposed design, conservation and maintenance plans, completeness of the sculptor s budget, sculptor s contract requirements and willingness of the sculptor to work with the committee to develop a plan to inform the public about the piece as it is developed Finalist Selection Criteria Quality of presentation and completeness of application. Aesthetic appeal and quality of past work Innovation and concept exemplified by past works including diversity of subject matter, content, media, and appropriateness of prior concepts for public art projects of similar-sized scope and budget Experience and success in creating public sculptures for outdoor environments Project Budget The total project budget minimum is $125,000; $100,000 includes sculptor fees and costs for design, engineering, fabrication of the sculpture and base, and delivery, and $25,000 for ancillary expenses, if required. Sculptor will perform as advisor during the installation. Project budget must also include reimbursable expenses, travel costs, accommodations for the sculptor, and insurance fees. The sculptor will be required to make one or two site visits for consultation with the Ray Bradbury Statue Committee; selection of materials for the base, and installation. The design proposal must include renderings and a scale model. 3

4 Required Application Materials The application submission must include the information and materials described below, all of which are required to constitute a complete application. Applications are to be submitted electronically via or on CD/DVD or USB Flash drive, or may also be mailed or dropped off at the Waukegan Public Library. Applications will not be returned. 1. Sculptor Statement of Interest (500 word maximum) Submissions shall include a Sculptor Statement of Interest that outlines a general interest in this opportunity. Explain your interest and your general approach to its design and production. Please include a brief description of your experience creating artwork for public spaces and collaborating with stakeholders. NOTE: This should not take the form of a formal design proposal, but rather a description of your methods for producing a design and finished project if selected. 2. Resume and References (4 page maximum) Submission shall include a current resume that outlines your professional accomplishments as a sculptor. Please include two references for your professional work. 3. Sculpture Samples (10 images maximum) Qualification submissions must include visual representations of sculpture that demonstrates your qualifications for this project. The applicant shall submit up to 10 images of past work. Proposals for this project will not be reviewed at this time. Image Specifications: All images must be formatted to the following specifications for consideration: Label: Last Name_First Name_imagenumber.jpg (i.e., Smith_John_image 1.jpg). Dimensions: 1200 pixels on the longest side File Format: BASELINE Standard JPEG File Size: each JPEG must be under 1MB Color space: RGB Description of Sample Sculpture Submission shall include an annotated list of the submitted images with descriptions that clearly explain the projects (if applicable) and images. Please indicate title, date, location, dimensions, significant materials, and budget. If you were a member of a team, please indicate your role in the project. 4
