2 ASPPH Public Health Internship Program Summer 2016 Program Announcement The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) represents schools and programs accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Our mission is to transform public health by strengthening and promoting the education, research, service, and practice activities of CEPH-accredited schools and programs (see ASPPH is currently soliciting applications for the Summer 2016 ASPPH Public Health Internship Program at ASPPH headquarters in Washington, DC. An internship is a professional work assignment that allows undergraduate and graduate students to combine classroom education with practical work experience. Interns will work on a variety of projects focusing on education and practice in public health. Eligibility Internship positions are available for both graduate and undergraduate students. To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements: Graduate student currently enrolled in a Master s degree program, OR An undergraduate who is a rising senior or will graduate in spring 2016, with a major in an area of study that focuses on the science and practice of public health, global health, global public health, or a closely related field. The degree program being pursued, whether graduate or undergraduate, must be offered through an ASPPH member school or program of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). To see a list of eligible schools and programs, click here. o Students attending non-aspph member schools or programs are not eligible. o For further clarification, the degree must be conferred by the ASPPH-member, CEPH-accredited school or program of public health. Related degrees not conferred by the ASPPH member institution are not eligible. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold a visa permitting permanent residence ( Green Card ) in the U.S. to be eligible for the fellowship program. 1

3 Period of Performance Internship positions are for weeks during the summer of Expected start dates will be in late-may or early-june. Exact dates will be determined based on the needs of ASPPH and the selected intern(s). Location ASPPH Summer Interns will be placed at ASPPH headquarters in Washington, DC. The selected intern(s) will be required to relocate to the internship location for the duration of the internship period. Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed. Stipend ASPPH will provide a training stipend to help cover living expenses during the internship period. The stipend amount will be determined based on education level. Evaluation Criteria The following criteria will be used to assess the applicant s qualifications to participate in the internship program. Evaluation Criteria Maximum Points Quality of Essay 40 Strength of Credentials 25 Previous Experience 25 Recommendations 10 Review and Final Selection Applications will be reviewed on the basis of the criteria described above. Applications will be scored and candidates may be called for interviews in early April. Upon completion of the interview process, candidates will be notified of the selection results. Selection results are expected no later than April 15,

4 Application Process Applications must be submitted through the ASPPH Training Programs Online Application System at All supporting, hardcopy documents should be sent via traceable delivery service or to the ASPPH office in Washington, DC. Materials need only be sent via or traceable delivery service, not both. The materials needed to complete an application are listed in the online application, and are described in detail below. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please see the Application Instructions section below for additional details. The online application must be submitted by 11:59pm Eastern time on Thursday, March 10, All hardcopy documents must be received at ASPPH by 5:00pm Eastern time on Friday, March 11, Application Instructions Online Application The ASPPH Training Programs Online Application System is a centralized application service offering a secure, easy, and convenient way for students to apply to all ASPPH Graduate Training Program Opportunities. The online application is accessible through the ASPPH website at: To begin your online application, please click "Create an account under the Log in button. If you already have an account, simply log in. To complete the online application, you will need the following: Resume/CV (only PDF format will be accepted) References list the name, , and phone number of two references Essay (1500 word max; only PDF format will be accepted) Your essay should explain your interest in, strengths, and qualifications for the internship, and how it will benefit your area of study and desired career path. You have the option to Withdraw your application as many times as necessary after submitting until the online application due date. Applications are reviewed only after the online application deadline has passed. Please note, if you choose to withdraw your application after having submitted it once, you must resubmit your application for it to be considered. 3

5 When you have completed your online application, be sure to submit it. Online applications must be submitted by 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on: Thursday, March 10, 2016 Hardcopy Documents In addition to the online application, applicants need to collect and submit the following hardcopy documents, which must be received by ASPPH via traceable mail service or (in allowable cases) by the hardcopy deadline of Friday, March 11, Signature page Available upon submitting the online application. You must print, sign and submit to ASPPH. Please do not fold or staple pages. A signed scanned copy of the signature page may be submitted via in PDF format to Applications@aspph.org. Official transcript o Graduate students should send graduate transcripts only o Undergraduate students should send undergraduate transcripts The transcript must be sent in the mail in a sealed envelope issued by your school. Electronic transcripts will not be accepted. Two letters of recommendation (from the references identified by the applicant in the online application system) ASPPH will not request recommendations from references; you must request that they write the letter and provide instructions on where and when to submit. Letters of recommendation must be on letterhead with contact information and original signature. Recommendation letters are preferred to be submitted in PDF format in an from the recommender to Applications@aspph.org with the name of the applicant in the subject line. Applicants themselves may not submit letters of recommendation via . Alternately, applicants may submit the letter in hard copy in a sealed envelope from the recommender in hard copy via traceable mail service. A copy of your Green Card, if you are not a U.S. citizen A scanned copy of a Green Card may be submitted via to Applications@aspph.org. 4

6 Hardcopy documents, whether submitted via or traceable delivery service, must be received by ASPPH by 5:00 pm (Eastern Time) on: Friday, March 11, 2016 Your application will be considered incomplete, and therefore will not be reviewed, if all hard copy documents have not been received by ASPPH (either by mail, or when allowable) by this deadline. Documents received after this deadline will render your application ineligible and it will not be considered for the program. The Education, Practice and Data Division helps to promote excellence and drive innovation in public health education, training and practice and strives to deliver programs and services that provide high value to ASPPH member schools and programs of public health. Expected Benefits: This internship is an excellent opportunity for a public health student to develop project management, technical, analytical, and reporting skills by working with members of the membership team to collect information on undergraduate programs; assist in the development and management of a centralized database to maintain network contact information; prepare materials for senior-level leaders; and conduct research to identify curricular resources. Specific tasks will be tailored to the level of education and experience of the intern. Position Description: The ASPPH Public Health Intern will assist in ASPPH activities related to public health education. Activities may include providing research assistance to program managers and senior staff, drafting reports and issue briefs, assisting with the organization and planning of webinars, and completing other special projects as needed. Training and Qualifications: Both undergraduate and masters level applications will be considered equally, based on the evaluation criteria outlined previously, and the training and qualifications listed below.
