6. Overview 6.. Rate of change of quantities For the function y f (x), d (f (x)) represents the rate of change of y with respect to x. dx Thus if s represents the distance and t the time, then ds represents the rate of dt change of distance with respect to time. 6.. Tangents and normals A line touching a curve y f (x) at a point (x, y ) is called the tangent to the curve at dy that point and its equation is given y y ( x, y) ( x x). dx The normal to the curve is the line perpendicular to the tangent at the point of contact, and its equation is given as: y y dy dx ( x, y ) ( x x ) The angle of intersection between two curves is the angle between the tangents to the curves at the point of intersection. 6.. Approximation Since f (x) f ( x+δx) f ( x) lim, we can say that f (x) is approximately equal Δx Δ x 0 f ( x+δx) f ( x) to Δx approximate value of f (x + Δ x) f (x) + Δx.f (x). 2 8 MATHEMATICS 6..4 Increasing/decreasing functions A continuous function in an interval (a, b) is : (i) strictly increasing if for all x, x (a, b), x < x f (x ) < f (x ) or for all x (a, b), f (x) > 0 (ii) strictly decreasing if for all x, x (a, b), x < x f (x ) > f (x ) or for all x (a, b), f (x) < Theorem : Let f be a continuous function on [a, b] and differentiable in (a, b) then (i) f is increasing in [a, b] if f (x) > 0 for each x (a, b) (ii) f is decreasing in [a, b] if f (x) < 0 for each x (a, b) (iii) f is a constant function in [a, b] if f (x) 0 for each x (a, b) Maxima and minima Local Maximum/Local Minimum for a real valued function f A point c in the interior of the domain of f, is called (i) local maxima, if there exists an h > 0, such that f (c) > f (x), for all x in (c h, c + h). The value f (c) is called the local maximum value of f. (ii) local minima if there exists an h > 0 such that f (c) < f (x), for all x in (c h, c + h). The value f (c) is called the local minimum value of f. A function f defined over [a, b] is said to have maximum (or absolute maximum) at x c, c [a, b], if f (x) f (c) for all x [a, b]. Similarly, a function f (x) defined over [a, b] is said to have a minimum [or absolute minimum] at x d, if f (x) f (d) for all x [a, b] Critical point of f : A point c in the domain of a function f at which either f (c) 0 or f is not differentiable is called a critical point of f. Working rule for finding points of local maxima or local minima: (a) First derivative test: (i) If f (x) changes sign from positive to negative as x increases through c, then c is a point of local maxima, and f (c) is local maximum value.
APPLICATION OF DERIVATIVES 9 (ii) (iii) If f (x) changes sign from negative to positive as x increases through c, then c is a point of local minima, and f (c) is local minimum value. If f (x) does not change sign as x increases through c, then c is neither a point of local minima nor a point of local maxima. Such a point is called a point of inflection. (b) Second Derivative test: Let f be a function defined on an interval I and c I. Let f be twice differentiable at c. Then (i) (ii) (iii) x c is a point of local maxima if f (c) 0 and f (c) < 0. In this case f (c) is then the local maximum value. x c is a point of local minima if f (c) 0 and f (c) > 0. In this case f (c) is the local minimum value. The test fails if f (c) 0 and f (c) 0. In this case, we go back to first derivative test Working rule for finding absolute maxima and or absolute minima : Step : Find all the critical points of f in the given interval. Step : At all these points and at the end points of the interval, calculate the values of f. Step : Identify the maximum and minimum values of f out of the values calculated in step. The maximum value will be the absolute maximum value of f and the minimum value will be the absolute minimum value of f. 6. Solved Examples Short Answer Type (S.A.) 4 0 MATHEMATICS. (). () 7 units/sec. Thus, slope of curve is decreasing at the rate of 7 units/sec when x is increasing at the rate of units/sec. Example Water is dripping out from a conical funnel of semi-vertical angle 4 at the uniform rate of cm /sec in the surface area, through a tiny hole at the vertex of the bottom. When the slant height of cone is 4 cm, find the rate of decrease of the slant height of water. Solution If s represents the surface area, then ds dt cm /sec r s r.l l. sin 4. l Therefore, ds dt dl l. dt l. dl l dt h /4 l when l 4 cm, dl. cm/s dt.4 4. Fig. 6. Example Find the angle of intersection of the curves y x and x y. Solution Solving the given equations, we have y x and x y x 4 x or x 4 x 0 x (x ) 0 x 0, x Therefore, y 0, y i.e. points of intersection are (0, 0) and (, ) Further y x y dy dx dy dx y and x y dy dx x.
APPLICATION OF DERIVATIVES At (0, 0), the slope of the tangent to the curve y x is parallel to y-axis and the tangent to the curve x y is parallel to x-axis. angle of intersection At (, ), slope of the tangent to the curve y x is equal to and that of x y is. tan θ + 4. θ tan 4 Example 4 Prove that the function f (x) tanx 4x is strictly decreasing on,. Solution f (x) tan x 4x f (x) sec x 4 When < x <, < secx < Therefore, < sec x < 4 < (sec x 4) < 0 Thus for < x <, f (x) < 0 Hence f is strictly decreasing on,. Example 5 Determine for which values of x, the function y x 4 and for which values, it is decreasing. 4x is increasing Solution y x 4 4x dy dx 4x 4x 4x (x )
MATHEMATICS Now, dy 0 x 0, x. dx Since f (x) < 0 x (, 0) (0, ) and f is continuous in (, 0] and [0, ]. Therefore f is decreasing in (, ] and f is increasing in [, ). Note: Here f is strictly decreasing in (, 0) (0, ) and is strictly increasing in (, ). Example 6 Show that the function f (x) 4x 8x + 7x 7 has neither maxima nor minima. Solution f (x) 4x 8x + 7x 7 f (x) x 6x + 7 (4x x + 9) (x ) f (x) 0 x (critical point) Since f (x) > 0 for all x < and for all x > Hence x is a point of inflexion i.e., neither a point of maxima nor a point of minima. x is the only critical point, and f has neither maxima nor minima. Example 7 Using differentials, find the approximate value of 0.08 Solution Let f (x) x Using f (x + Δx) f (x) + Δx. f (x), taking x.09 and Δx 0.008, we get f ( ) f (0.09) + ( 0.008) f (0.09)
APPLICATION OF DERIVATIVES Example 8 Find the condition for the curves orthogonally. x y a b ; xy c to intersect Solution Let the curves intersect at (x, y ). Therefore, x y a b a b x ydy 0 dx dy b x dx a y slope of tangent at the point of intersection (m ) bx a y Again xy c dy x y dx + 0 dy dx y m x y x. For orthoganality, m m b a or a b 0. Example 9 Find all the points of local maxima and local minima of the function 4 45 f (x) x 8 x x Solution f (x) x 4x 45x x (x + 8x + 5) x (x + 5) (x + ) f (x) 0 x 5, x, x 0 f (x) 9x 48x 45 (x + 6x + 5) f (0) 45 < 0. Therefore, x 0 is point of local maxima f ( ) 8 > 0. Therefore, x is point of local minima f ( 5) 0 < 0. Therefore x 5 is point of local maxima.
4 MATHEMATICS Example 0 Show that the local maximum value of x + is less than local minimum x value. Solution Let y x + dy x dx x, dy dx 0 x x ±. d y dx + x, therefore d y (at x ) > 0 and dx d y (at x ) < 0. dx Hence local maximum value of y is at x and the local maximum value. Local minimum value of y is at x and local minimum value. Therefore, local maximum value ( ) is less than local minimum value. Long Answer Type (L.A.) Example Water is dripping out at a steady rate of cu cm/sec through a tiny hole at the vertex of the conical vessel, whose axis is vertical. When the slant height of water in the vessel is 4 cm, find the rate of decrease of slant height, where the vertical angle of the conical vessel is 6. 9 APPLICATION OF DERIVATIVES 5 dv dt l 8 dl dt r Therefore, dl 6. 8 dt dl dt cm/s. Therefore, the rate of decrease of slant height cm/s. h /6 Fig. 6. l Example Find the equation of all the tangents to the curve y cos (x + y), x, that are parallel to the line x + y 0. Solution Given that y cos (x + y) dy dx sin (x + y) dy + dx...(i) or dy ( ) dx sin x + y + sin( x+ y) Since tangent is parallel to x + y 0, therefore slope of tangent Therefore, ( + ) ( x y) sin x y + sin + sin (x + y)... (ii) Since cos (x + y) y and sin (x + y) cos (x + y) + sin (x + y) y + y + or y 0. Therefore, cosx 0. Therefore, x (n + ), n 0, ±, ±...
6 MATHEMATICS Thus, x ±, ±, but x, x satisfy equation (ii) Hence, the points are,0,,0. Therefore, equation of tangent at,0 is y x or x + 4y 0, and equation of tangent at,0 is y x+ or x + 4y + 0. Example Find the angle of intersection of the curves y 4ax and x 4by. Solution Given that y 4ax...(i) and x 4by... (ii). Solving (i) and (ii), we get x 4b 4ax x4 64 ab x or x (x 64 ab ) 0 x 0, x 4a b Therefore, the points of intersection are (0, 0) and 4 a b,4a b. Again, y 4ax dy 4a a and x 4by dx y y dy x x dx 4b b Therefore, at (0, 0) the tangent to the curve y 4ax is parallel to y-axis and tangent to the curve x 4by is parallel to x-axis. Therefore, slope of normal sin θ + cos θ Hence the equation of normal is y (sinθ sin θ) sin cos θ θ [x (cosθ cos θ)] y cos θ sinθ cos θ + sin θ cos θ xsin θ sin θ cosθ + sin θ cos θ y cos θ xsin θ sinθ cosθ (cos θ sin θ)
8 MATHEMATICS sinθ. cosθ 4 sin4θ or 4 (ycos θ xsin θ) sin4θ. Example 5 Find the maximum and minimum values of f (x) secx + log cos x, 0 < x < Solution f (x) secx + log cosx Therefore, f (x) secx tanx tanx tanx (secx ) f (x) 0 tanx 0 or secx or cosx Therefore, possible values of x are x 0, or x and x or x 5 Again, f (x) sec x (secx ) + tanx (secx tanx) sec x + secx tan x sec x secx (sec x + tan x secx). We note that f (0) ( + 0 ) < 0. Therefore, x 0 is a point of maxima. f () ( ) < 0. Therefore, x is a point of maxima. f f (4 + 4) 6 > 0. Therefore, x is a point of minima. 5 (4 + 4) 6 > 0.
