1 Adults and Seniors Activities Newsletter September 1, 2014 Volume 42, Issue Watertown Area Senior Games The Largest Yet! The 2014 Watertown Area Senior Games wrapped up on the fourth weekend of August with our largest games ever. We topped last years numbers with a grand total of 431 registered participants who competed in 26 different events. Senior Games August The big event of each summer is coming up on August with the Watertown Area Senior Games. 27 different events are held over the three day period with events scattered all over town. We are excited to have Big Stone Therapies putting on our picnic this year and the Golden Living Centers providing free water. The games are open to anyone 50 and over and for both men and women. Call to register or for more information.

2 Adults and Seniors Senior s Got Talent The annual Senior s Got Talent event was held recently at the Senior Activities Center and what a fine program we had. Thank you to all of the performers and to everyone who came to watch our yearly event. Make plans for next year August 13, 2015 with a start time of 7:00 p.m. The Senior Activities Center Weekly Wednesday Night Dances are held at 7:30 p.m. and are open to the public. Riding the Recreational Trail The Watertown Recreational Trail is truly one of the best things about living in Watertown and this summer we wanted to highlight the trail by putting on bike rides on six different nights where if you rode all six rides you would have ridden the entire trail system here in Watertown. We did a good group of people that came out this summer and many of them did complete all the weeks. Thank you to all who participated and due to the success we will look at offering more rides next summer and make this a yearly event. Shuffleboard Summer League Complete Congratulations to the two champions of the Summer Shuffleboard League. Much like the winter session it was again Julia Lambert who took the title in the 2:00 p.m. league and Doug Murfiled took the title in the 3:30 p.m. league. Page 2 The next league for shuffleboard will be starting up in February and will last three months. The sign up sheet will be posted in late fall. 3 Horseshoe League Champions Crowned Volume 42, Issue 42 The 2014 Watertown Horseshoe League wrapped up at McKinley Park. Three new champions were crowned for the summer with Vine Marks from Sisseton taking the A-Division title. Jim Flisrand took the B-Division title while Norbert Gruba was crowned the C-Division champ. Thank you to all the pitchers for an outstanding season. Vine Marks (A-Division Champion) Jim Flisrand (B-Division Champion) Norbert Gruba (C-Division Champion) Joy Ranch Horseshoe Tournament Champion Yoga Seniors is The 125 Anniversary Celebration at Joy Ranch was a fun event for everyone especially the horseshoe tournament that was held put on by the Park and Rec. In the finals Keith Flemming from Arizona defeated Dale Kludt by one point to become the champion. Both finalists received there awards in front of a large crowd on the showmobile. Wii Bowling Doubles League The 2014 Wii Bowling Doubles League wrapped up with Lee Jackson coming out the champion by squeezing out a victory over 2nd place Lloyd Christians. Third place went to Hubert Valberg, 4th went to Jean Strohfus and 5th place went to Julia Lambert. 4 Adults and Seniors Outdoor Walking Club Triples in Size What a great summer it was and what a fantastic turnout we have had for the Outdoor Walking Club each Friday morning. The numbers have tripled in size since the last couple of years which we are very excited about. Some of the favorite walks of the members this summer where the ones at Joy Ranch, Mount Hope Cemetary and of course the Bramble Park Zoo. Thank you to all the walkers for making this one of our biggest programs this summer. Members of the Outdoor Walking Club walking by the Stokes-Thomas City Park area Friday Night Bingo at the Watertown Senior Activities Center starts each week at 6:45 p.m. Trail Walking Club to Get Underway The second season of the Trail Walking Club will be getting underway this month each Friday at 9:00 a.m. starting on the 12th at Memorial Park. Each week we will walk for around one to one and a half hours. For a complete list of the walks please stop at the Watertown Park and Rec. offices. Bean Bags Overall Winner Page 4 The Weekly Outdoor Bean Bag Tournaments that are held at the Senior Activities Center each summer are always one of the highlights of each year and this year we had just as much fun. Congratulations to Lee Jackson who is the overall winner over the summer. This year we added a couple of different competitions including Bean Bag Eliminator and Bean Bag Survivor which also added to the fun each week. Lee Lefty Jackson 2014 Summer Champion

5 Wii Golf Summer League Wrap Up Congratulations to Gerry Martell who has won the annual Wii Golf Summer League at the Watertown Senior Activities Center. Gerry narrowly defeated last years champion Aaron Griepp for the title. Volume 42, Issue 42 This was probably the most competitive league we have had and it has been great to see the improvement of all the golfers over the past few months. A reminder for all the golfers that the next league the Winter League will be starting up in the month of January. Gerry Martell the 2014 Wii Golf Summer Champion Bowling Leagues Kickoff September 30 With the month of September starting up we are seeing a couple of big programs starting up this month. The annual Wii Bowling Winter League will be kicking off on September 30 at 9:00 a.m. Once again Professional Hearing Services will be sponsoring our league which we very much appreciate. We will again have 3 different divisions of play to keep it competitive for everyone. There are a couple of openings still left so sign up asap to reserve your spot. The second annual Team Bowling League will also kick off this month. There will be a drawing to determine the team captains followed by a closed draft where the teams will be selected. The Team League will play the last Tuesday of each month, and this year by having the draft should make it more competitive and more fun. Remember to start thinking about team names if you are chosen as a team captain you will not just pick your players you will be able to choose your team name. What a summer it has been as we have had a lot of activities and a lot of fun. Some of the highlights of the summer of 2014 for me was of course the grant we received from the Professional Disc Golf Association to start up a disc golf program for seniors in the area which will start in May of We expect this to be a big hit and see a lot more seniors come out and participating in this sport this is ideal to all ages. Another highlight was our Outdoor Walking Club which in the last year has tripled in size. The word has really gotten out and what a blast everyone had walking around Watertown every Friday. I also wanted to mention about one of the most devoted and talented seniors that I know. Lloyd Christians was recently recognized by the Senior Activities Center and the RSVP program for all the wonderful volunteer hours he has put in. He also put a lot of time and energy and lets not forget money that he has put into the more than 100 projects that he has done for the Center. Jeremy Herrboldt Watertown Adult/Senior Activities Coordinator Lloyd is very deserving of this and I hope he knows how much all of us appreciate his help and dedication for all he has done and all he does do on a daily basis for the seniors.
