1 SPRING EDITION 2015 EVERY BODY WELCOME GESAC S HEALTH AND WELLBEING NEWSLETTER Spring has finally arrived and I m sure many of us are happy to be saying goodbye to the icy mornings. I am proud to announce there have been some exciting achievements during winter. Firstly, GESAC won both the Customer Service Award and Personal Trainer Award at the Aquatic and Recreation Victoria (ARV) Industry Awards in June. These are two highly-regarded awards and reflect the effort that we continue to receive from our staff. Congratulations to the 54 participants who took part in our recent six week team challenge in the Health Club. They achieved some significant results with one of our customers losing more than 30 centimetres in the first five weeks. Due to its popularity, we will be running a new challenge in October. Stay tuned for further details. Our new ladies daytime netball competition has started successfully, with the mums enjoying the convenience of a social game of netball while their kids enjoy the benefits of our childcare centre. Our leisure pool will be closed on Monday 7 to Friday 18 September to carry out essential maintenance to this area. We apologise for the inconvenience but works are necessary to ensure the facility continues to operate at a high standard. Just a reminder that the 50 metre pool hours will revert to being open all day as of Monday 21 September. The spring edition of the Group Exercise Timetable is now available and there are some fresh additions that can give you the best start ahead of summer. Finally, I d like to thank our members for their continued support and encourage you to get in contact with us if there is anything we can assist you with. 2 GESAC is proud to announce that Centre Manager Mark Collins was a finalist in the 10th annual SACS Leadership Awards Awards, held at the Sofitel Hotel on Wednesday 26 August. Mark was nominated for the prestigious Award and was the first runner-up. The Awards recognise examples of true leadership with leaders that change the experience of colleagues and stakeholders, also inspiring people to innovate and improve operations themselves. All staff at GESAC congratulate Mark on this recognition of his hard work and inspiring leadership. GESAC Centre Manager Mark Collins. GESAC staff were announced as winners of the Customer Service Team and Personal Trainer Awards at the 2015 Aquatic and Recreation Victoria (ARV) Awards held on Friday 12 June. The Awards are overseen by ARV, the industry body and involved a written application and a mystery onsite audit and verification process by industry peers. The Customer Service Team Award is an organisational award that recognises excellence and commitment of a team to a facility, including knowledge and skills relating to customer service, interpersonal and leadership skills, contribution to the facility and commitment to excellence. Feedback from the judges was that GESAC S Service Improvement Program was a leading contributor in determining the result as well as the professionalism and knowledge displayed. The Personal Trainer Award is an individual award and was won by Brady Daw. It recognises the outstanding contribution by a personal trainer to the local community, the facility and industry through high-level customer service. Feedback from judges was that Brady is an excellent trainer who has been assessed on his high levels of technical knowledge and customer service. CHILD CARE GESAC S childcare and pre-kinder program is delivered in a safe and friendly environment so that your child has a comfortable and fun experience while in our care. Members are entitled to a discounted rate of $7 per session or are able to purchase a 10 pass multi-visit for $63. Child care hours: Monday Friday Session one: 9.15am 10.25am Session two: 10.30am 11.50am Pre-kinder hours: Monday and Thursday, 12.30pm 3pm (subject to demand) New outdoor equipment for childcare and playgroup participants.

3 GESAC s inaugural Retail VIP Night was a huge success with more than 150 people in attendance. The night featured a fashion parade from GESAC s industrious personal trainers, as well as exciting discounts to a selection of fitness and swimwear. Event organiser Customer and Retail Team Leader Pru said it was an exciting and positive experience and she looks forward to running another one in the near future. The Retail VIP Night was really successful and it was great to see such a large turnout, Pru said. Everyone received gift bags on arrival, delicious nibblies and a fun fashion parade with a sneak peak of our spring stock. GESAC hopes to run another VIP night in November to launch the summer range from brands including Seafolly, Running Bare and Speedo. Make sure you pop into the GESAC retail store to check out the new spring stock.

Why do you believe group fitness is important? Group fitness makes exercise fun and has the power to improve the health and wellbeing for many people. Why did you join GESAC and what do you enjoy about it? GESAC is the premier destination for group fitness in Melbourne. The facility is fantastic, the staff are friendly and the members are passionate. What can you say about your interactions with GESAC s members thus far? I love that there is such diversity here at the club. People from all walks of life coming together to have fun, get fit and build a healthier and happier community together. MEMBER S CORNER Name: Samuel How long have you been a member? Since before the Centre opened (Foundation member). What do you like most about GESAC? I like the gym the most it s new, upto-date and not too crowded. All of the trainers are really friendly and are good for a chat and to give advice at any time. Being able to use the pools and spa/sauna area as part of the membership, is an added bonus. How have you benefited since starting at GESAC? It has helped me put on some size and strength for football and overall maintain a strong level of fitness. What do you have to say about GESAC staff? They ve all been really friendly and welcoming. You re always greeted with a smile and chat when entering the gym. Favourite muscle group to work: shoulders Favourite sport: footy Favourite team: Richmond Tigers SLEEP AND EXERCISE Not getting enough sleep can have consequences for health, particularly managing weight. On average we need about eight hours of quality sleep per night. People who get less than this tend to have more body fat than those who don t, which is due to a combination of hormones and habits. The two key hormones affected by sleep deprivation are ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin is the go hormone, which tells you when to eat. When you are sleep deprived you have more ghrelin and studies have shown this is when your appetite increases up to 25 per cent. Leptin is the stop hormone, which causes you to feel full, so when you are sleep deprived, you have less of it. These hormonal challenges can create a vicious cycle of habits. Not only does your appetite increase but so does your craving for high carbohydrate snacks, which you find yourself reaching for to stay alert. If you find yourself relying on stimulants such as caffeine and sugar to get through then this can further disrupt sleep by keeping you tired and wired. Sleep deprived people are generally more lethargic and less capable of getting to the gym. When you skip the gym you don t just miss out on burning calories, building lean muscle mass and increasing your metabolic rate, you also miss the endorphins and the opportunity to process stress hormones. Being physically tired from a workout can improve the quality of sleep to make tomorrow a better day. Try training with a friend or joining one of our group fitness classes and you ll feel more inclined to attend and avoid excuses. Getting adequate sleep is not just helpful in maintaining a healthy weight, it is also important for physical, mental and emotional rejuvenation and repair. Make it a priority to get eight hours sleep a night and enjoy greater vitality and wellbeing.

5 There is a lot happening in the Stadium with our new competition launched for Mum s on the Move netball on Tuesday mornings. As you can see by the photos, the mums enjoy a social catch-up after the game. With the new futsal seasons about to kick-off in the first week of September, we will have the most teams registered in the three years we have been running our Stadium competitions. Also in the Stadium, we have many of our Swim School participants also increasing their motor skills and joining in with the Warriors Kids First Basketball program which is going from strength to strength. For the little ones, Ready Steady Go for preschoolers is a great way to gain confidence by improving their motor skills in a fun environment. So there are many activities happening in the Stadium, so why not check out the different options on our website
