Co-requisite(s) N/A Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Increased proficiency in writing and conversing about texts. 2. A firm knowledge of academic research tools, methodologies, and strategies. 3. A greater comprehension of the nuances of argument as a rhetorical mode. 4. Accomplishment in the writing of a fully developed argumentative research paper. 5. Increased proficiency in the application of Modern Language Association documentation guidelines. 6. Continued development of written skills relative to grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. 7. Continued development of oral communication skills relative to articulation of ideas and presentation of subjective positions. 8. Enhanced critical reading skills and continued development of critical thinking skills.

6 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: t Competency 1 Develop techniques of critical reading. Objective 1.1 Examine, interpret, and evaluate a text more thoroughly by annotating during the course of a reading. Objective 1.2 Appraise a text more decisively by freewriting upon the conclusion of a reading. Objective 1.3 Construct more insightful responses to a text by maintaining a reading journal. Competency 2 Demonstrate proficiency in the use of standard written English. Objective 2.1 Identify and repair common problems in grammar, particularly run-on sentences and sentence fragments. Objective 2.2 Identify and repair common problems in punctuation, particularly the misuse of commas and the misapplication of quotation marks. Objective 2.3 Identify and repair common problems in mechanics, particularly the incorrect use of capitalization and the misapplication of italics. Competency 3 Write persuasive position papers. Objective 3.1 Apply strategies for writing to identify appropriate topics for discussion. Objective 3.2 Determine a viable, defensible thesis.
