Description: This presentation provides the foundation skills necessary to find, land and keep a job. From aptitude testing to résumé writing to financial aid to interviewing skills, each career-building segment prepares students to enter the world of work. Objectives: 1. To introduce the student to the basics of career planning. 2. To investigate the steps to evaluating career choices. 3. To formulate a plan to reach career goals. 4. To develop the necessary skills to properly prepare job application documents. 5. To understand the elements and skills necessary for a job interview. 6. To discover guidelines of choosing the proper attire for the workplace. Complete the Skills, Talents & Interests Activity. Instruct students to begin the Job Shadowing Project. Students will present the project in Class 8. Class 2: Distribute the College Questions? Handout. Show the Higher Learning and Financial Aid segments. Remind students to use the Vocabulary Handout 11 min. and the Worksheet as references. Class 6: Show the Interviewing and The Interview Process segments. Remind students to use the Vocabulary Handout and the Worksheet as references. 15 min. Distribute the Common Interview Questions Activity. Allow students time to complete the previously assigned Cover Letter, Résumé & References Project. Class 7: Class 8: Allow time to complete the Mock Interview Project. Dependent upon class size, this may take more than one class period. Allow time for students to present the Job Shadowing Project. Class 3: Begin class by asking students their thoughts on the most important factors of a career or job choice. Write all answers on the board. Distribute the 10 min. Each interview provides terrific insight and advice for students bringing the vast world of work and real-world application to the classroom.

6 Skills, Talents & Interests Students will conduct a self-assessment of their skills, talents and interests. Followed by using the Career Exploration media site to identify careers which they feel correlate to their self-assessment. Results of the self-assessment will be compared with an aptitude test to analyze the differences and similarities. L E S S O N P L A N Find a Job Students will identify current job listings in the newspaper and online which interest them. Students will create two lists. One which identifies jobs they are qualified for right now and another which identifies jobs they would like to qualify for in the future. For the future job listings, students will develop a plan of how to fill the skill/requirement gap(s) between now and possible employment of these jobs. Job Application Students will complete a sample job application utilizing the tips learned throughout the Application segment. Common Interview Questions Students will write out answers to common interview questions which will better prepare them for the in the Mock Interview Project. Job Shadowing Students will shadow a member of the community for the day to learn more about the chosen career. Students will create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation detailing their shadowing experience. Presentations will be conducted for the entire class. Cover Letter, Résumé & References Students will create a cover letter, résumé and reference list for one of the jobs listed on their Find a Job Activity. The chosen job will also be the job for which they will interview during the Mock Interview Project. See Teacher Instruction Sheet for additional information. Mock Interview This accumulating project allows students to participate in a mock job interview. Students will prepare for the interview by completing the Common Interview Questions Activity, as well as utilizing documents created in prior activities and projects. Capturing the interviews on video will allow students to assess their performance.
