1 SCHOOL OF EDUCATION & TRAINING Secondary Education Design and Technology BA Hons and PGCE programmes leading to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status Avery Hill Campus

2 Secondary Education: Design and Technology Why study one of our programmes? The University of Greenwich s secondary education programmes in design and technology are run by the Design & Technology Centre, part of the School of Education & Training. The centre currently offers design and technology programmes, which lead to the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. These are described on the following pages. These programmes ensure that design and technology trainee teachers gain the necessary skills and qualifications to teach in secondary schools. They also reflect current developments in the subject, requiring students to demonstrate flexibility, innovation, subject knowledge and an aptitude for working with young people. Our students have a strong reputation both locally and nationally, with a recent graduate receiving the Best Newcomer Award from the Design and Technology Association. The Design & Technology Centre is based on the Avery Hill Campus, in Eltham, southeast London. The campus provides excellent academic and social facilities and is situated in 86 acres of parkland. Avery Hill has good transport links to central London and Kent. Why study with us? We are looking for creative and dynamic individuals who can motivate young people. Technology is constantly changing and you need to be able to adapt and learn new skills then use these to innovate in the classroom. We offer: A personal and friendly atmosphere Motivated and experienced staff Well-resourced facilities An accredited CAD/CAM training centre Excellent career prospects Opportunities for European exchange Guaranteed accommodation for year 1 students Bursaries for eligible students.

3 What courses will you study? The four programmes offer courses covering: Subject Study courses will help you to apply the knowledge and skills you develop in a design-and-make context and cover: Product Design Electronics and Mechanisms Digital Electronic Systems Textiles Design Computer-Aided Design and Manufacture Designing A Food Option, including food hygiene and nutrition certification. Teaching Studies and Professional Studies will help you to develop the skills to: Meet National Curriculum, GCSE and post-16 requirements in design and technology Apply your classroom management skills Become aware of administration and planning requirements in design and technology Apply health and safety considerations. School Experience consists of 24 weeks, during which time you will: Develop teaching skills and adopt a variety of strategies that meet the needs of different learning situations Be supported by experienced mentors/teachers Which is the right programme for me? Our four design and technology programmes are: BA Hons Secondary Design and Technology (2 years) This is aimed at mature people who already have prior subject knowledge, such as a minimum of one year in higher education studying a related subject or a HNC/HND or experience in an occupational area related to design and technology. BA Hons Secondary Design and Technology (3 years) This is aimed at students coming directly from school with related A-levels, or mature students entering through Access programmes or similar routes. PGCE Secondary Design and Technology (1 year) This is designed for those who have a degree which involves substantial subject knowledge related to design and technology. Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course (1 year) This is a one-year subject knowledge enhancement course which is designed for people who have a degree and experience related to design and technology but insufficient subject knowledge to take a one year programme. This course qualifies you for the one-year PGCE Secondary Design and Technology programme and may be supported with a bursary. We also offer a two-week Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course to concentrate on your weaker areas before taking up a particular design and technology programme. For more details, see

4 Career opportunities Teaching in a secondary school. Teaching and assessment The basis for monitoring progress is an audit of skills, experience and expertise that trainees bring to the programme. This enables tutors to advise and direct trainees into areas of design and technology practice which may need further development or support. Trainees are allocated a subject specialist teacher, who acts as a mentor. The mentor observes trainees teach and offers help and guidance. Trainees also take courses in subject studies, teaching studies and professional studies. The first teaching placement focuses on understanding the school as an organisation and identifying and claiming the standards required to deliver the curriculum. During the second and third teaching placements, you increasingly take responsibility for managing learning and demonstrating professional skills. The courses are assessed through a professional portfolio, an exhibition of practical work, written assignments and practical demonstrations of classroom skills. These are concerned with professional issues and teaching skills, including ICT. These programmes ensure that trainees are formally assessed against the national statutory requirements for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and lead, if the student is successful, to the recommendation for QTS. Financial information Students beginning in September 2010 intake, on the PGCE Design and Technology programmes are paid a university bursary of 9,000. In addition, a grant may be available from Maintenance and tuition fee loans are also available. PGCE Students may also receive a Golden Hello of 2,500; this is a one-off payment when they begin the second year of a teaching post. Students on the Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course (1 year) may be eligible for a bursary of 7,200. This financial assistance may also be available to nationals of other EU countries, as well as to students from other qualifying countries. In general, however, students from outside the EU are responsible for paying their own tuition fees and cannot qualify for a bursary or Golden Hello. For up-to-date financial information, go to or visit the website for the Training and Development Agency for Schools at Visit us University Open Days are held several times a year. These typically provide a programme of talks and a tour of the campus and give potential students the chance to speak to staff and students. A list of dates can be found at or contact the Enquiry Unit for further information.
