11 SMARTFIBRE Pedro Fardim and Jan Gustafsson Our project focused on development of concepts and technologies for fibre functionalisation and characterisation. Technology for fibre functionalisation that is suitable for large scale and cost efficient applications are needed. Functional pulp fibres can be used in new value chains other than traditional papermaking. We could develop methods for functionalising fibres with inorganic nanoparticles and biopolymers leading to new fibre products that are suitable for flame retardant materials and biocomposites. We could also develop a new process for shorter bleaching sequences in pulp mils. A new platform for fibre characterisation was also developed using nanorobotics and automation. This platform gives new perspectives on measurements of fibre properties and allows the design of fibre functionalities with great precision. Technology and innovation transfer to industrial partners is available in form of new processes to be implemented in fibre lines or new fibre products to be used in other value chains than papermaking. In addition a new device is available for fibre characterisation in laboratory scale
