4 MISKOLC M i s k o l c, t h e c h o i c e o f t h e f u t u r e Miskolc with its agglomeration is the public administration, economic, scientific, intellectual and cultural centre of the Northern Hungarian region. Miskolc has a very rich history and background in steel and machinery industry dating back to the 18th century. The University of Miskolc with its history of more hundreds of years is the educational and research centre of the region. Miskolc is Hungary s fourth largest urban area. Some people live in and around Miskolc and its agglomeration. The city currently is a hotspot for industrial and commercial investments. Machinery industry, chemical industry, services, trade and tourism are still the most important sectors in the region. Within 2010 Q1 Q3 in the Northern Hungarian region industrial sector rose by 19% mainly due to the growth of the machinery industry. Export rose by 26% in the same period. 11 ARRIVED J u s t a r r i v e d Success stories... One of Europe s leading machinery manufacturers, a Finnish company has bought a 24-hectare plot in Miskolc s Mechatronics Industrial Park in order to build a plant. The firm will employ about 400 people from the beginning of operation in Miskolc, which will be their fifth biggest factory after Finland, France, the USA and China. They plan to produce more than pieces of components for building construction per year; 50% of the raw materials they will buy from local suppliers. The German Gustav Wolf GmbH has bought a 2 ha plot in the Mechatronics Industrial Park and will build a 3.5 million wire factory. The company expects to launch production of steel strands used in the manufacturing of motor-vehicle tires at the 2,000-square-meter factory. The company will initially employ 50 workers at the new factory and expects the plant to generate a turnover of 6 10 million per year.
