2 Public Transportation Status as of March 2013 Budapest's public transportation network includes: bus (Autóbusz), tram (Villamos), trolleybus (Trolibusz), metro (Metró), suburban railway (HÉV), boat (Hajó) and night services (Éjszakai menetrendek). All public transportation (except the boat service) operates between about 4:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.; night services are operating in between this time. Tickets must be purchased beforehand. Travellers may be asked to show the validated ticket during the trip. Travellers without a validated ticket have to pay a penalty of HUF (about 54 EUR). Tickets or passes can be purchased at ticket offices between 6:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. or at vending machines at public transportation stations. Tickets There are many different tickets for the public transport network of Budapest. (One change possible. Changes between metro lines do not count.) Metro The Budapest Metro is the rapid transit system in the Hungarian capital Budapest. It is the fourth oldest underground railway system in the world, only the London Underground, 1863, Athens Metro, 1869, and the Mersey Railway at Liverpool, 1886, pre-dates the railway. Its iconic Line 1, dating from 1896, was declared a World Heritage Site in There are three metro lines in Budapest which provide connection to the three train terminals and the inner city of Budapest. 3 Arriving by Plane Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD) Address: 1185 Budapest, BUD Nemzetközi Repülőtér Tel: +36 (1) Web: Liszt Ferenc International Airport is located about 13 km southeast of the city centre. The airport can directly be reached with the bus lines 200E and 900 (during night times), by an airport shuttle service, by taxi and by car. The airport provides a wireless internet connection in all departing passenger circulation areas. Smoking inside the airport terminals is not allowed. Airport Bus From 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., bus number 200E commutes between Liszt Ferenc International Airport Terminal 2 and the Kőbánya-Kispest metro terminal (metro line M3), via the Ferihegy train station (trains to the Nyugati railway station in Budapest). From the Kőbánya-Kispest metro terminal, passengers can take the M3 metro towards Újpest Központ to reach the city centre. It is possible to change to metro lines M1 and M2 at the Deák Ferenc tér stop in the inner city. From 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., night bus number 900 operates between Budapest Airport Terminal 2 and the South Pest bus garage. At the Szarvas csárda tér stop, it is possible to change to night buses 950 and 950A, operating to the inner city. Change to metro line M2 (direction Déli Pályaudvar ) at the station Deák Ferenc tér. Leave M2 at Batthyány tér and take tram 19 or 41 and leave at the next station, Halász utca (alternatively walk about 400 m from the station Batthyány tér to the hotel). Airport Shuttle The AirportShuttle-Minibusz Service is an alternative to the public transportation or taxi services. It provides direct transfers from the airport to the hotel and vice versa. As special service it offers a free WIFI-access on board. Orders can be made at at least one day before arrival or directly at the AirportShuttle-Minibusz desk. The price for the transfer from the Liszt Ferenc International Airport to art otel Budapest is HUF (about 10 EUR) and becomes cheaper with the higher number of passengers accessing the Minibus. 2

4 Arriving by Train The Budapest train network is linked up with the European rail network in all directions, running trains as far as London (via Munich and Paris), Paris (via Munich), Stockholm (via Hamburg and Copenhagen), Moscow, Rome and Istanbul (via Belgrade). Most international trains arrive and depart from Keleti pályaudvar. Keleti pályaudvar (main train station) Budapest-Keleti pályaudvar (Budapest-Eastern Railway Terminal) is the main international and inter-city railway terminal in Budapest. The building was constructed in eclectic style between 1881 and 1884 and was one of the most modern railway stations of Europe in that time. Route from Keleti pályaudvar to art otel Budapest Take metro line M2 (direction Déli pályaudvar ) and leave the metro at Battyány tér. Then take tram 19 or 41 and leave at the next station, Halász utca. Alternatively you can walk about 400 m from Batthyány tér to the hotel. Déli pályaudvar Budapest-Déli pályaudvar (Budapest-Southern Railway Terminal) is located in the first district (Várkerület) of Budapest, the station is located in Buda, and primarily serves towns and cities in Transdanubia. It was first opened in Route from Déli pályaudvar to art otel Budapest Take metro line M2 and leave the metro at Battyány tér. Then take tram 19 or 41 and leave at the next station, Halász utca. Alternatively you can walk about 400 m from Batthyány tér to the hotel. Nyugati pályaudvar Budapest-Nyugati pályaudvar (Budapest-Western Railway Terminal), is one of the three main railway terminals in Budapest. The station was planned by August de Serres and was built by the Eiffel Company. 5 Arriving by Car Coming from western/south-western direction: When coming from route M1/E60/E75 and from route M7/E71 follow the signs to Budapest- Centrum. Route M1/M7 turns into the street Budaörsí útca. Follow the signs to Erzsébet híd and Centrum, then to Margit híd. Leave the street Alkotás utca and turn right into the Márvány utca. Follow the course of the road until you reach a roundabout. Leave the roundabout at the last exit and turn right into Bem rakpart. Follow the street until you reach no. 16, art otel Budapest. Coming from northern/north-eastern direction: Follow the signs to M3/E71 and Centrum. After crossing the city borders of Budapest follow the signs to Hosök tere and Lágymányosi-híd. Follow the course of the road until you reach the bridge Széchenyi lánchíd. Leave the roundabout behind the bridge at the first exit. Turn right into Bem rakpart and follow the street until you reach no. 16, art otel Budapest. Coming from south-eastern direction: On route M5/E60/E75 follow the signs to Centrum, then to Lágymányosi híd and to Rákóczi híd. Cross the bridge Rákóczi híd and leave the street at the first exit on the right. Take the street northward on the western riverside of the Danube and follow its course until you reach the bridge Széchenyi lánchíd. The first street on the left after passing the bridge leads to Bem rakpart. Follow this street until you reach no. 16, art otel Budapest. Taxi Companies There are many different taxi companies in Budapest and not all taxi meters are set at the same rates, and some are much more expensive than others. There are price ceilings under which cab companies are free to manoeuvre; anyway ordering taxis in Budapest is quite cheap. From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. the highest flag-fall fee that can be legally charged is 300 HUF (1 EUR), the per-km charge 240 HUF (0,82 EUR) and the waiting fee 60 HUF (0,20 EUR). From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the equivalent fees are 420/330/80 HUF (1,43/1,12/0,27 EUR). A phenomenon in Budapest is, that it is always cheaper if you book a taxi over the phone then to flag down a taxi in the street.
