The SSAF is calculated and charged progressively for each semester, based on your enrolment (mode and study load) within a calendar year. This short course aims to help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed at university. PASS Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are designed to assist your transition to university life. PASS is a voluntary program that offers academic assistance through weekly guided study sessions for undergraduate students. Higher Education Mentor Program Whether you are coming to university from high school, TAFE, the workforce or another path there are common challenges to overcome. To support your transition to university, we provide you with an experienced student mentor. Student Experience Office The Student Experience Office enhances your university experience by providing sport, recreation, social and interest group activities. Consultations are bulk billed and are available by appointment to all students. For students studying at SMB and Camp Street campuses there are external health services located nearby. Gippsland students have access to an on campus nurse offering a vaccination service. Counselling Counselling can provide you with free, professional and confidential assistance for a range of academic and personal issues such as: career decisions, adjusting to student life, cultural issues, academic progress, financial hardship, relationships, anxiety, depression, and stress management. Disability The Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) is available to assist people with permanent and temporary disabilities in gaining access to courses and facilities and in achieving their academic and training goals. Further assistance may be available for apprentices and trainees through the DAAWS (Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support) scheme. Student Learning Skills Student Learning Skills provides free assistance in study skills, academic writing and English language for undergraduate degree students. Learning Skills Advisers present academic skills workshops throughout the year and can provide limited individual assistance at weekly drop-in sessions. Aboriginal Education Centre The Aboriginal Education Centre provides support to prospective and current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. FedUni is well placed to improve access and participation rates by strengthening its pathways and raising aspirations and confidence levels of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A voluntary working with Children Check. This entry level qualification prepares students wishing to progress to further study or employment in community services in the welfare services industry. This qualification defines the knowledge and skills for residential care workers work autonomously under the broad guidance of others. This qualification refers to specific knowledge of a client group and appropriate intervention processes applied in residential and community settings. Professional Experience Successful completion of 30 hours volunteer work within a welfare agency is necessary to ensure a pass in all courses of the program. Further Study Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Community Services Work will lead to a guaranteed place in the Diploma of Community Services Work. Completion of the Certificate IV in Community Services Work provides students with some credit towards the Diploma of Community Services Work. Successful completion of this certificate will allow graduates to seek employment as a Residential Care Worker and other related fields; alternatively students may progress to further study. Applicants must attend an information session and complete a literacy assessment. Police Check and Working with Children Check. This program equips students with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities to work in the community sector. Theoretical concepts combined with practical application are applied in this program for students to gain a broad range of technical skills along with the interpersonal skills required to work in this industry. This qualification requires students to complete 400 hours of placement which provides students with the opportunity for hands-on work in the community sector and to demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom. Applicants must either be recognised as competent, through a recognised training program or recognition process, against the following compulsory courses of competency from the Certificate IV in Community Services Work: CHCCS411A Work effectively in the community sector HLTHIR403B Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and coworkers Professional Recognition Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) On completion of this diploma, graduates will be eligible to seek employment in the human services field with a range of employment bodies including local, state and federal government departments, voluntary organisations, community-based organisations and private employers in the Social and Community Services (SACS) industry. Police Check and Working with Children Check. This dual award qualification will equip graduates with a range of skills which will allow them to provide services and interventions to clients with Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) and/or Mental Health issues and/or implement health promotion and community interventions. Work in this area may focus on engaging people with AOD and mental illness issues in the community. This may include relapse prevention and promotion of recovery through programs such as residential rehabilitation, work in clinical settings, home based outreach and centre-based programs delivered by community organisations. The mental health components of this certificate provide the student with the skills to provide rehabilitation and support for people affected by mental illness and to implement community based activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and mental health promotion work. It also allows the student to gain specific knowledge of clients with Alcohol and Other Drugs issues and to provide intervention strategies in residential and community settings. It is usually undertaken over a four week period full time (120 hours approx.), however part-time can be negotiated given that some students have other commitments. This qualification enables students to provide services to clients in relation to mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues in the area of Community and Human Services. Specialist knowledge, skills and competencies are developed especially in regard to laws affecting clients, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health issues and alcohol and drug use and misuse. Applicants must have a Certificate IV qualification or above in a Community or Health related area and/or relevant experience. It is expected that students will be employed in or entering into a position within the Community Services industry. The study of Rural Social Welfare grew out of an identified need for more welfare support in Australia s rural areas. The degree introduces students to models, theories and methods of rural social policy, social planning, welfare service provision, social development and practice, with a special emphasis on regional and rural communities. The bachelor challenges the metro-centric basis of many social work and welfare theories, and seeks to equip students with an enhanced framework for practice in rural settings. There will be a specific emphasis on issues faced by indigenous people, and the course is located within a culturally respectful framework of social welfare practice. This degree will prepare you for a variety of careers in the social and community services industry. You will be introduced to a range of practice and theoretical approaches within a variety of contextual environments, and will develop both practical skills in welfare service delivery and the capacity to critically analyse issues relevant to the delivery of welfare services in Australia. Studies in human behaviour, psychology and social inquiry are core components of the qualification; and you must choose a plan of a least 90 progress units from one of these areas in addition to your Rural Social Welfare plan. You will also be able to complete the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) Psychology plan (150 progress units) which is fully accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), enabling you to undertake postgraduate studies in Psychology. In addition, you may wish to plan a program which enables you to undertake a Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary) after completion of the degree or undertake a Masters by Research, or a doctoral postgraduate qualification. Professional Recognition The degree is accredited by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA). The Psychology major is fully accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). The program will provide you with the skills and knowledge to enable you to pursue careers in a variety of welfare and social services, both in government and nongovernment settings. While a particular reference and focus is given to rural practice issues, as a graduate you will be able to gain employment in both rural and urban locales. Career options are flexible with graduates being employed in areas such as youth work, child protection, community work and in many other areas. Graduates are able to pursue postgraduate studies in psychology or teaching. Industry Experience You will undertake fieldwork placements in a variety of agency settings in your second and third years of the degree. This is a total of 72 days of supervised practice. In second year, placement is 20 days duration and third year placement is 52 days. These placements will take place partly during semester and partly during break periods. Final year field placement is generally undertaken over 4 days per week in second semester and coincides with September school holidays. 13 What our graduates say Melissa Sizeland Bachelor of Arts (Rural Social Welfare) Youth Services Manager BGT Youth Services I completed my degree and now work at BGT (Ballarat Group Training) as the Youth Services Manager looking after a number of Government contracts relating to youth work across the Grampians region. Our core business is working with young people between who are at risk of leaving school early or who have already left school to reengage back into an educational setting, reconnect with family and the community. Mark Lacey Bachelor of Arts (Rural Social Welfare) Client Engagement Officer Centacare Ballarat While studying for my BA in Rural Social Welfare, I gained employment at Ballarat Health Services as one of the first consumer consultants there a kind of a patient advocate position. I worked in that role for 14 years, and in that time won a number of reforms for patients/consumers. In fact, at accreditation in 2010, I gained an outstanding achievement categorisation with my colleague, Jackie Crowe, the family/carer consultant. I was also appointed to be a member of the Victorian Mental Health Reform Council. Since the start of this year, I have been employed at Centacare Ballarat as the Client Engagement Officer, another client advocate position. Thanks for the years of excellent education and training. Successful completion of at least two Australian university level (or equivalent) units will also be considered. Attendance at weekend schools is compulsory for all All students students undertaking psychology units and some community welfare and counselling units. This degree develops skills and knowledge for intervention across a range of practice fields, including (but not limited to): counselling, child protection, disability, family support, homelessness, community corrections, youth justice, community development, aged care, family violence, research and policy analysis. The study program includes case management and human services practice from a management perspective. You will need to complete a structured sequence in community welfare and counselling including two field placements in community development and human service organisations. An arts minor from Australian Indigenous studies, Psychology, Psychological Studies or Sociology is also taken. The study program focuses on counselling, group work, community development, social policy and emancipatory practice. Graduates may work with individuals, families, groups and communities in crisis or development situations, in areas such as community services, counselling, and social research, policy and planning. Industry Experience You will also be required to undertake a 16- day placement in the second/third year and a 60-day field education placement during the final year. You are required to attend the Gippsland campus for two residential workshops during the program, involving one two-day workshop and one three-day workshop. Psychology courses also require compulsory attendance. This degree develops skills and knowledge for intervention across a range of practice fields, including (but not limited to): counselling, child protection, disability, family support, homelessness, community corrections, youth justice, community development, aged care, family violence, research and policy analysis. The study program includes case management and human services practice from a management perspective. You will need to complete a structured sequence in community welfare and counselling including two field placements in community development and human service organisations. An arts minor from Australian Indigenous studies, Psychology, Psychological Studies or Sociology is also taken. The study program focuses on counselling, group work, community development, social policy and emancipatory practice. Course structure The Arts component includes a major and minor study area, a first-year level sequence in a third area of study and two electives. The Community Welfare and Counselling component is a structured sequence including two field placements in community development and human service organisations. Studies cover a range of areas related to human services, counselling, social welfare and community development. Students are required to undertake a 16-day field education placement in their second/third year and a 60-day field placement during the final year. Graduates find employment is areas such as youth work, advertising and marketing, policy and research, consumer research, industrial relations, human resources, program co-ordination and welfare. Work is also found in areas related to the arts major and minor studied. You are required to attend the Gippsland campus for two residential workshops during the program, involving one two-day workshop and one three-day workshop. Psychology courses also require compulsory attendance.
