18 Success Stories Rachael Sedgwick Bachelor of Nursing, Ballarat The highlight of my degree was the clinical placements My dream career was to help people in need. After speaking to current students at Open Day and researching, I decided nursing was the career for me. I always thought that I would enjoy being a nurse because it s a career that is hands-on and involves people and communication skills which I felt I was good at. I have always had a strong connection with children and endeavoured to become a paediatric nurse, which I have succeeded in! The highlight of my degree was the clinical placements. The placements were always an exciting experience because I was able to put my theory into practice and Ballarat offered an extended number of weeks of placement. Clinical placement was a fantastic way to develop confidence in communication and better understand nursing processes, which also helped with my graduate year. I completed the Graduate Nursing Program at the Royal Children s Hospital and I am currently employed here. I completed my graduate nurse year on the Platypus ward, which includes orthopaedics, urology, plastics, burns and trauma courses. On completion of my graduate year, I successfully obtained a scholarship to complete my Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatrics, through the University of Melbourne and the Royal Children s Hospital in I loved studying at Ballarat due to the unique, friendly and personal approach to learning. The teaching staff are readily available to provide advice and support, and help to expand your knowledge in the nursing environment. I encourage future students to put your mind to something and work hard. Everyone has the ability to succeed and reach any goal they set. Cameron O Brien Bachelor of Nursing Practice, Gippsland A career that makes a difference Cameron O Brien chose to study nursing at the Gippsland campus so he could experience a challenging and rewarding career that makes a difference to the lives of others in his community. I ve always wanted to have a career that allowed me to make an important contribution to the region and its residents. I saw the Bachelor of Nursing Practice as a way to do that, and I m confident it provides the right mix of resources and support to start my career off on the right foot. The program continually presents fun and exciting challenges, whether it s through high-intensity clinical placements, or the program content and classroom interaction. Cameron says the supportive learning environment he shares with his peers was equally important. The Gippsland campus provides a relaxed atmosphere to study in. I feel like I m surrounded by friends and peers, who just happen to be really inspiring teachers, students and professionals as well FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder

21 Success Stories Tracey McKay Bachelor of Nursing Practice/ Bachelor of Midwifery, Gippsland Making a difference for women Tracey McKay was attracted to the double degree of Nursing Practice and Midwifery as it provided a window of opportunity to move into her dream career. I ve always been amazed by the whole pregnancy and birthing process and wanted to help women during this special moment in their lives. This double degree has allowed me to study an area that I m truly passionate about and it leads to a long-term career, where I can achieve my goal of becoming the best nurse and midwife I can be. Tracey says the staff at Gippsland are always willing to help with the challenges of the program and encourage students in their endeavours. The support of the other students and teaching staff is just wonderful. Our university group has become very close and we re always assisting each other. Tracey is interested in the cascade of intervention that many women face when giving birth. I would like to see midwifery take the next step, avoiding a medically-based approach to birth and hopefully giving women the choices they deserve. New practices in the field are in our generation s hands. It s a career in which I ll never stop learning and this excites me FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder 19
