I love being around children and watching them develop, they have so many questions, and a great imagination. The Diploma of Children s Services helps you to understand their development and how children grow and learn. As soon as I came to Open Day and saw the campus, I knew I wanted to study here. Once I got into the program, we started learning about brain development and I found that really interesting. We did practical placement which I loved. We had 2 focus students that we had to observe, and plan experiences for them. In my first year, I lived on residence in Victoria Street. It was a great experience, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, meeting and getting to know new students. After completing the Diploma I have now gone on to study the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and I m now in my second year. Studying at TAFE first was a great pathway to this degree. It really prepared me well and I already had a good understanding of children and their behaviours, rather than starting straight from high school. The Diploma also gave me quite a few credits towards the degree, which means I didn t have to undertake all of the first year subjects again FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder 7

14 Success Stories Jack Blythman Bachelor Primary Education, Gippsland Campus Securing the skills and support for teaching success After completing Year 12 in Bairnsdale, Jack Blythman knew studying education at Gippsland would offer new and exciting opportunities, but wanted to be sure that support would be there when he needed it. Having a good relationship with my lecturers is helpful when it comes to needing assistance with assignments and course work. It s nice to know that I m not just a number to them, but someone who they know and care about. Jack is on his way to becoming a PE teacher, and has found the flexibility of Gippsland s programs ensure he becomes a wellrounded and highly qualified educator. Aside from being able to shape the course to my own interests I ve been able to take part in a range of extracurricular activities on campus, as well as sport and field placements, which not only helped my resume, but also made studying fun and less stressful. Being able to get out and be involved in classrooms throughout the local community while still studying makes it all worthwhile. The relaxed feel and social opportunities on campus are great, and you get a more personalised experience than secondary school. Jenna Shaw Bachelor Primary Education, Gippsland Campus Real experience in the workplace Jenna Shaw says she has found her study and school placement experience to be extremely rewarding. Placements are not only complementary to university studies and start you on the road to becoming a teacher, but they also show you how exciting a teaching career can be. Throughout her placements, Jenna has made the most of Gippsland s unique location to enhance the experience for her students, including taking one of her younger classes to the nearby Hazelwood Wetlands to learn more about the environment. Student teachers are sometimes given opportunities to teach in settings outside the classroom. I ve been placed at both small and larger schools in towns across Gippsland, including Morwell, Tyers, Moe and Rosedale. I m currently completing advanced practicum at St Gabriel s Primary School in Traralgon. It s been very enjoyable working with a wide range of knowledgeable primary teachers in the schools. The lecturers and tutors at the Gippsland campus are fantastic. They re always willing to help with whatever you need, be it workload or assistance with placement. The placements I have undertaken have been an awesome experience and I ve enjoyed every minute FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder

There are excellent support services available, and the teaching staff are always there if you need them. I have been passionate about teaching since a young age and have committed to reach my goal. I chose this university because I had heard from past students what a great course it was. I have met so many new people, and created memories that I ll have for a long time. The organised social nights have been an ideal way to feel like I m part of the university and the orientation program in my first year was invaluable. My course has been so interesting and enjoyable, especially my time on rounds. So far I have been on two primary school placements, which the staff in the placement office arranged for me. I have really enjoyed the lectures and tutorials, and these have prepared me well in the lead up to my assignments and placements. My advice to prospective students is don t be afraid to ask for help. There are excellent support services available, and the teaching staff are always there if you need them FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder 15
