Avondale teaching graduates are highly employable; in 2013, 90 percent of students were offered a full-time teaching position within two months of graduation most of these immediately after graduation. At Avondale, you will engage in practical classroom experience in your first semester. You may also be given the opportunity to travel overseas, and gain teaching experience in a developing country such as India, Cambodia or Nepal. Avondale s Bachelor of Education (Primary) is designed to prepare you to graduate as a teacher who is reflective, creative and confident in the classroom and can transform children s lives through teaching and mentoring. Four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) The BEd (Primary) is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and the Board of Studies, Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES). Overview The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is a highly practical course with hands-on classroom experience from the first semester. The degree not only qualifies and prepares graduates to competently teach from Kindergarten to Grades 6/7, but also to be responsible and ethical leaders to children who need positive role models. During the course, you will engage in seven professional experience opportunities. These are undertaken at various primary schools to enable the application of theory in a practical setting. You may also be able to undertake an overseas practical experience. 2 P age

3 Where it could take you Successful completion of the BEd (Primary) will allow you to graduate with the qualifications to teach from Kindergarten to Grades 6/7 and to gain employment in the following areas: Primary teacher Infants teacher Primary school administrator Primary school specialist teacher (Music, Art, PE) Middle school specialist teacher (Music, Art, PE, Science, Mathematics, Humanities) Teacher librarian Tutor. Graduates leave qualified to teach in church, private, independent and state school systems in both Australia and overseas. In addition to education-related careers, teachers often find careers in the corporate world where organisational and relationship skills are valued by employers. Course Structure The BEd (Primary) is composed of 32 units (192 credit points) of full-time study over eight semesters or part-time equivalent. All units are worth six credit points. Component Christian Studies units (3) Development and Experience units (8) Studies units (14) Education Studies units (5) Education Elective unit (1) Discipline Elective unit (1) Description Christian studies units address the religious, ethical and social value emphases of Avondale s philosophy of education derived from its Seventh-day Adventist faith tradition development and experience units address the teaching strategies, skills and practices involved in teaching in the primary classroom and provide opportunities for continuous school-based professional experience, offering increasing responsibilities within a variety of school settings for periods of two to six weeks at a time. The course requires a total of 100 days of professional experience. studies units focus on content and methods of teaching for the key learning areas of the primary school curriculum. Students are familiarised with both NSW State, Australian and Seventh-day Adventist syllabus resources with the intention that they should be prepared to teach effectively in either government, independent, or church-related schools. Education units provide a theoretical base to the teaching and learning process, as well as a practical perspectives contributing to the development of attributes of caring, competence, commitment, critical-reflective skills and Christian values. Education electives are units chosen from within the School of Education, which contribute to the professional development of the trainee teacher. Primary education students may select one undergraduate level unit chosen from outside the School of Education. Overview The Associate Degree of Classroom Support (Primary) is designed to prepare graduates to support classroom teachers over the entire range of Kindergarten to Grade 6/7 key learning areas (KLAs). Graduates leave qualified to support teachers in church, private, independent and state school systems. Course Structure The Associate Degree of Classroom support (Primary) is an integrated course of 16 units (96 credit points) of study over two years of full-time study. The course requirements include 65 days of professional experience. The course is comprised of curriculum studies (7 units), education studies (4 units), Christian studies (1 unit) and professional development and experience (4 units). 5 P age

6 GENERAL INFORMATION Entry Requirements DIRECT ENTRY ATAR of (or equivalent e.g. OP of 17 or less) ALTERNATE ENTRY If your ATAR is below (or equivalent), you may still be able to gain entry into this degree on a conditional basis. For further information on alternative pathways into the course visit ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Overseas applicants will have their qualifications assessed by Avondale Admissions. Overseas applicants are also required to satisfy Australian Government visa requirements. Self-disclosure and Criminal Record Check Current legislation requires that all students who will be working with children or young people must take responsibility to make an online application for a NSW Working With Children Check Check/Volunteers-and-students and complete the Child Protection Awareness Training. All students enrolled in education degrees must complete the above and evidence of completion must be sent or given to the Experience Placement Officer. This will cover all local school visits undertaken as part of education courses and school placements in New South Wales schools. All students who undertake placements in states other than NSW must also complete a separate Working with Children Check relevant to the state in which they are doing their placement. The placement officer will help with this process. Pre-service teachers must take a copy of the Working with Children Check form/card with them to their placement school. This applies to pre-service teachers doing Experience placements in all Australian schools. 6 P age

Some textbooks are available to borrow from Avondale s library. Students who hold a CSP pay a student contribution amount for each unit of study at a lower fee rate than a full domestic tuition fee. FEE- HELP is a Commonwealth loan scheme that allows eligible students to defer tuition fee payment and can cover all or part of a student s tuition fees up to a lifetime limit. 8 State Registration Requirements for Teachers Endorsement of Avondale s Bachelor of Education (Primary) by the New South Wales Government Institute of Teachers Advisory Panel qualifies graduates for employment as teachers in the NSW State public system. Other Australian state governments have different requirements for teachers to become registered to teach in state schools, but normally registration in one state is considered as meeting the requirements for other states. Information concerning certification requirements is available from the Faculty Dean. You are advised to familiarise yourself with these requirements, as responsibility for registration as a teacher rests with you.
