We provide leading edge, practice-based training The Institute of Family Practice s (IFP) mission is to provide education and development for people entering or working in child, family and relationship services in NSW. We aim to assist in the development of a robust, highly skilled workforce achieving the best possible outcomes for children, young people and families. We provide professionally recognised training The Vocational Graduate Diploma of Relationship Counselling CHC80208 meets the PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) training standards (2012). PACFA has set rigorous standards to ensure a high degree of professionalism in the sector. The Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution CHC80308 meets the educational requirements of the Commonwealth Attorney General s Department requirements for accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. Our courses are competitively priced and students can pay upfront or in instalments. IFP has VET FEE-HELP for eligible students studying at Diploma and Vocational Graduate Diploma level. We re flexible Most of our students have to juggle competing work and family priorities. We provide class times that are friendly to those who are working and have family responsibilities. IFP offers daytime and evening/weekend classes in most qualifications. We provide quality education IFP provides students with a variety of training methods, including face-to-face seminars, lectures, experiential workshops, online learning and home study. We offer a full range of courses IFP offers professional qualifications that range from certificate IV level (no pre requisites needed) through to Vocational Graduate Diploma level. The qualifications we offer can also assist those with Social Work, Social Welfare and Psychology degrees to specialise in working with couples, families, children and young people. 6 The Vocational Graduate Diploma in FDR is a fantastic course for anyone interested in becoming a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP). 7 OVERVIEW OF RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION COURSES Certificate IV in Relationship Education CHC42412 Diploma of Relationship Education CHC51912 The Certificate IV in Relationship Education is designed for people working in the community services or health sectors. This qualification prepares students/workers for career paths in non therapeutic support, parenting education, group work and relationship skills programs. The Certificate IV in Relationship Education is the first stage of the Diploma of Relationship Education and students may wish to access recognition (RPL) processes to demonstrate competency in some subjects. Training is delivered in subject blocks. Duration: Flexible 9 months or up to 2 years Entry Requirements: Some prior knowledge or experience in the community health sectors (paid or voluntary work). Access to a suitable workplace is essential to apply on-the-job learning requirements. Subjects: Effective Group Leadership Working with Relationships Workplace Health and Safety Then Working with Men Or Working with Families The Diploma of Relationship Education is the continuation of the Certificate IV in Relationship Education with a mixture of modules as electives depending upon the student s preference. Training is delivered in subject blocks. Duration: 6 months 4 years depending upon existing competencies or qualifications (including the Certificate IV in Relationship Education) Entry Requirements: Certificate IV in Relationship Education or experience in the community services or health sector (paid or voluntary). Access to a suitable workplace is essential to apply on-the-job learning requirements. Subjects: As for the Certificate IV in Relationship Education and the following: Design and Develop Relationship Education Programs Coordinating Relationship Education Programs And one of the following: Strengths Based Practice Building Safer Families Develop Psychoeducational Programs Leadership Training Managing Risks in the Workplace Coordinating Programs and Stakeholders Organisational Leadership and Mentoring Working with Emotion Regulation or Anger Management Issues Managing Diversity in the Workplace COMING IN 2014: Certificate III in Disability CHC

8 OVERVIEW OF COUNSELLING COURSES Certificate IV in Community Services Work CHC40708 Diploma of Counselling CHC51712 The Certificate IV in Community Services Work is designed for people who are interested in entering the community service workforce. Achieving this qualification gives you the skills and confidence to work in a wide range of roles with opportunities to work in areas such as disability, mental health, youth work and other jobs within community service organisations. The Certificate IV in Community Services Work is delivered as a mix of face-to-face and online learning. Duration: 6 12 months Entry Requirements: No prior knowledge or experience. Application process includes a non-competitive student interview. Subjects: Communication Skills Mental Health Responding to Client Issues Ethics and Administration Working Across Cultures and Diverse Backgrounds Child Protection Issues Community Development: Theory and Practice Case Management I Workplace Project (50 hours) Workplace Health and Safety The learning objectives for this qualification are based around the different models of community services and providers, students gain knowledge on the intricacies of working in community organisations, communicating with clients and evaluating their needs along with the complex nature of working with disadvantaged groups and individuals. Students completing the Certificate IV in Community Services Work may be considered for recognition of prior learning for some subjects contained within the Diploma of Counselling. The Diploma of Counselling is designed for those working or wishing to work in assisting roles where a high level of autonomy is required and counselling related activity is an integral part of the role. For example: intake worker or support worker or a worker in telephone counselling or a residential care worker in a community service provider. The Diploma of Counselling is a mix of face-to-face and online learning. VET FEE-HELP is available to eligible students studying at Diploma level. Duration: 2 years Entry Requirements: Completion of HSC or equivalent (no ATAR required) or through mature age entry at the age of 21 or above. Application includes short answer questions and non-competitive interview. 9 Vocational Graduate Diploma of Relationship Counselling CHC80208 Students undertaking the Diploma of Counselling choose one elective from the following choices: Effective Group Leadership Develops knowledge and skills to effectively lead and facilitate therapeutic and educational groups, group processes and the dynamics of a group and group work. This elective also enables students to plan, organise and deliver group based delivery modes and intervention strategies within a variety of group settings along with how to utilise observation and group analysis skills. Problem Gambling Counselling Students undertaking this elective will learn how to identify and assess client needs and how to provide support for clients and their families with problem gambling issues. This subject offers high level specialist knowledge in regards to the laws affecting clients, the range of services available to clients including counselling, referral, advocacy and education. Mental Health Issues Students undertaking this elective will learn how to recognise mental health issues in children, young people and adults and devise appropriate case plans or referral strategies. This subject offers a theoretical approach for identifying and managing the personal issues that may arise when working with people in a counselling environment. Working with a Disability This elective gives students the understanding of issues facing people with disabilities and their carers. As well as the practical knowledge and skills to advocate and support people whilst upholding their rights, students will learn appropriate referral and the delivery of services within organisations. The subject teaches students the different impact on people with specific disabilities including acquired and developmental disabilities. The Vocational Graduate Diploma is designed for those who wish to work as a counsellor in private practice or organisations that provide relationship counselling for individuals, couples and families. VET FEE-HELP is available to eligible students studying at Vocational Graduate Diploma level. Duration: 2 years Entry Requirements: Relevant Counselling Diploma or higher with 200 hours of appropriate work experience. OR An appropriate undergraduate degree e.g. Counselling, Psychology, Social Science or equivalent. OR Demonstrated extensive previous experience in a family counselling environment undertaking self directed interventions applying knowledge of substantial depth, independent judgement, decision making and a range of counselling and case management skills. All applicants for the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Relationship Counselling are required to participate in an application interview. Subjects: Family Therapy Couple Therapy Working with Children at Risk: Domestic Violence, Suicide and Homicide Working with Children, Young People and Families Working Therapeutically with Families after Separation Working Therapeutically with Children after Separation Clinical Placement (50 hours+) Electives: Grief and Loss Group Counselling Addictions 07

10 OVERVIEW OF FAMILY DISPUTE RESOLUTION COURSE Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution CHC80308 The Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution is designed for those working, or wishing to work, in a variety of settings providing dispute resolution services and interventions for families post-separation and where people may be involved in the Family Law System. The Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution meets the educational requisites of the Commonwealth Attorney General s Department requirements for accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP). For students seeking registration as a FDRP with the Commonwealth Attorney General s Department, who also have the required undergraduate qualification in psychology, social work or law, have the option of completing the six core competencies. Students undertaking this option must find their own appropriate placement. VET FEE-HELP is only available to eligible students studying the entire Vocational Graduate Diploma level. Duration: 6-8 months block training plus placement. (Placement can take up to six months on completion of course work.) Entry Requirements: An undergraduate degree or higher qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Law or relevant social science. OR An accredited qualification in conflict management or dispute resolution at Diploma level or Advanced Diploma level. OR A Certificate IV in Mediation together with significant relevant vocational practice. OR Applicants undertaking this qualification need to have previous experience in a dispute resolution environment, the job role would have involved the self directed application of knowledge with substantial depth in some areas, the exercise of independent judgement and decision making and a range of technical and other skills. All applications for the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution are required to participate in application interview. Subjects: Subjects for the full qualification (10 units of competency): Framework of Family Dispute Resolution I Framework of Family Dispute Resolution II Professional Development and Ethics Family Dispute Resolution and Family Law Power, Family Violence and Safety in Family Dispute Resolution Working Across Cultures and Diverse Backgrounds Working with a Child Focus Clinical Placement (20 hours+) Those with the required undergraduate qualification can choose to undertake the six core competencies. The subjects are: Framework I Framework II Ethics Power, Family Violence Family Dispute Resolution and Family Law External clinical placement sourced by student (20 hours+) Participants would be required to undertake a clinical placement in a suitable workplace. 08 PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION COURSES

11 OVERVIEW OF FAMILY INTAKE AND SUPPORT WORK COURSE Diploma of Family Intake and Support Work CHC51812 Many organisations have a range of services to choose from and intake workers are the initial point of contact for potential clients. Workers in these roles may also provide some non-therapeutic supports, such as provision of information, initial intake, referral, advocacy, administrative tasks and participation in case planning. The Diploma of Family Intake and Support Work is designed to provide high level knowledge communication skills, intake skills and a broad knowledge of counselling and family dispute resolution to equip intake and support workers employed in various services that provide relationship support and interventions for families. It also provides a broad knowledge of the legal and ethical framework in which they work. For students who have completed a Diploma of Counselling exemptions will be given for Counselling Skills Development I and II, Ethics and Administration, Working Across Cultures and Diverse Backgrounds and Domestic and Family Violence. Duration: 18 months Entry Requirements: Relevant work experience in an autonomous role. The Application process includes a short essay and student interview. Subjects: Theories of Counselling Counselling Skills Development I Counselling Skills Development II Intake Skills Case Management and Intake Work Ethics and Administration Working Across Cultures and Diverse Backgrounds Suicide Awareness Domestic and Family Violence Understanding the Family Law Environment Introduction to Family Dispute Resolution Supervised Work Project (50 hours) Workplace Health and Safety As I reflect back on my time at IFP, I can honestly say that it was a truly positive experience every step of the way. As a student I experienced those principles that were being taught to us as necessary in a healthy counselling relationship; being listened to, care and empathy, good communication and healthy boundaries with flexibility. 12 Further Information VET FEE-HELP Eligible students who study at Diploma Level or Vocational Graduate Diploma level are now able to apply for VET FEE-HELP to assist with the payment of course tuition fees. What is VET FEE-HELP? VET FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector that is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). VET FEE-HELP assists eligible students undertaking certain VET courses of study. It allows students to borrow funds up to their FEE-HELP limit to help pay for all or part of their tuition fees. Students who access VET FEE-HELP assistance will have a loan with the Australian Government who will, on the student s behalf, pay their tuition fees to their approved VET provider. The loan is repaid through the tax system once a student s income reaches the specified threshold. For more information on VET FEE-HELP go to We offer a variety of assessment methods Subjects are assessed using a variety of methods including: participation in group discussions learning activities essays case studies role plays and student critiques of their own work. We offer Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) If you have previously studied or have relevant on-the-job training or experience prior to enrolling in any of our courses, you may request an assessment for Recognition (RPL). If you have completed nationally accredited training with other RTO s including TAFE, you may have already attained some of the competencies included in our qualifications and can request a credit transfer. RPL applications will be addressed on an individual basis. Candidates will need to provide evidence highlighting their existing knowledge and skills. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION COURSES 10

13 University Credit and Links IFP pathway to Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Social Welfare or Bachelor of Social Work. IFP graduates with the Diploma of Counselling are eligible for the standard two years or 128 point credit package for the Bachelor of Social Welfare. IFP graduates with either the Diploma of Counselling or Diploma of Problem Gambling Counselling are eligible for one year credit for the Bachelor of Social Work. Library services for IFP students For students who are enrolled in a qualification, the UnitingCare Children Young People and Families Library will provide services to support the learning needs of students. The library catalogue includes professional journals, reference books, videos and DVD resources. Students also have access to the PsychInfo database with online access to thousands of articles. Centrelink Provider number IFP has Centrelink approval for Cert IV in Community Services Work (CHC40708); Diploma of Counselling (CHC51712); Vocational Graduate Diploma of Relationship Counselling (CHC80208) and Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution (CHC80308). Potential students who are Centrelink clients need to contact Centrelink regarding possible assistance whilst studying at IFP. Assistance is determined by Centrelink dependant on individual s client status. All counselling and FDR applicants are required to attend a personal interview conducted by experienced therapists and trainers. The application interview is a non competitive process to ensure potential students fully understand the course and the learning processes involved. Our interviewers (counselling qualifications only) use the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) principles to guide IFP in the student interviews.
