The Bachelor of Engineering Technology is a three year design-orientated technical qualification that has replaced the three year Bachelor of Engineering Science degree providing you with the best possible start in a career as an Engineering Technologist. 5 Specialisations for engineering success Civil Engineering Civil engineers are responsible for the design and construction of all types of structures including dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers and buildings that are associated with our transport systems, gas and water supply, sewerage systems, harbours, airports and railways. Civil engineers also plan, design and test the structures of private and public buildings and facilities. A civil engineer will work from an architect s drawings and consider whether the chosen materials for a particular building will be strong enough to hold a structure of that height or design. It is the responsibility of the civil engineer to produce safe, economical and environmentally-sound structures. Civil and Environmental Engineering This growing field combines the skills of a civil engineer to design build and manage a range of infrastructure, with the knowledge of an environmental engineer to create a sustainable future. This area involves the latest in construction engineering and its operation and management, including road and water systems with a focus on incorporating physical and environmental contexts. Civil and environmental engineers manage natural resource systems such as forests, land and water, paying attention to sensitive urban design and reducing factors such as erosion and salinity. They also work in land use planning to produce sustainable urban and rural developments. Mechanical Engineering As a mechanical engineer you will apply the principles of physics and mechanical science to the design and construction of all forms of mechanical systems. You will be involved in all aspects of design specification, development, research, evaluation, manufacture, installation, testing, operation, maintenance and management of machines and systems. This will include, but not be limited to, mechanical and mechatronic systems, automated systems and robotic devices, heat transfer processes, thermodynamic and combustion systems, and fluid and thermal energy systems. With a vast array of career opportunities, a mechanical engineer will quickly find work anywhere in the world. Engineering Technologist vs Professional Engineer As a Professional Engineer you will work at a theoretical level to isolate and define a required engineering outcome, you will then identify one or more potential solutions. The Professional Engineer will conceptualise ways to ensure the desired outcome is met and will then work closely with an Engineering Technologist to determine which is the best solution. You will oversee and potentially contribute to the construction process. As an Engineering Technologist you will work with a Professional Engineer to put predetermined theory into practice and assist in identifying which solution will best deliver the required outcome. You will work in a hands-on role in the construction process. Mining Engineering Mining engineers work together with geologists to investigate and carry out the extraction of ore bodies and mineral deposits, as well as the extraction of non-metallic ores and fuels such as coal and uranium. They are responsible for planning the safest and most cost effective way of removing minerals from the ground, rivers or the sea bed. They may be involved with designing, installing and supervising the use of mining machinery and equipment and for inspecting the progress of mining operations. Mining engineers are responsible for protecting conditions for both people and the environment in the vicinity of mines. PAGE 3

11 Success stories Jessie Waugh Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate, Gippsland Campus Engineering the skills for future success In addition to providing her with the skills being demanded by some of Australia s biggest employers, engineering graduate Jessie says her degree has opened the door to opportunities at home and abroad. I travelled to the United Kingdom as part of the study abroad program, and spent a year at the University of Leeds. During the program, I met fellow students from around the world, and had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe to see many of the engineering achievements I d only ever read about in a textbook. After returning to Australia and completing her degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Gippsland campus, Jessie was offered employment with one of Melbourne s leading engineering firms. Currently, I m working as a Civil Structural Engineer at Beca, where I m responsible for designing bridges as part of major infrastructure projects around Victoria. It s an exciting role, but one that I wouldn t have been able to do without the knowledge that the Civil and Environmental Engineering program has provided. Liam Cox Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate, Gippsland Campus Variety and challenge in the workplace Working as a consultant engineer with GHD Mildura, Liam says opportunities to work on new projects arise frequently. I enjoy the variety of projects, clients and locations I am able to work in. Projects can come from the local area as well as other offices elsewhere within the organisation. They can relate to my already established skills, but often have components of other engineering fields. This requires the ability to adapt and quickly learn new skills necessary to complete a project. Liam says one particular benefit of the position is the further professional development available, and the stimulation of working with other young professionals. As a student, Liam said working part-time as an engineering intern at Latrobe City was of great benefit. This work provided vital practical experience, mentoring from senior engineers, and essential financial support. For me, the significance of university in my life extends beyond just studying friends I studied with have now become important professional contacts. PAGE 9

Typically, mechanical engineering has the widest application of the engineering fields and has increasingly been complimented with computer software tools for design and analysis. On completion, you will be able to apply your newly developed skills in a wide range of practical contexts within the engineering industry. Content The suggested program consists of 5 core courses and up to 15 electives, and is delivered over one year full-time or part time equivalent. The diploma is vocational and, for this reason contains a significant amount of practical work, as well as theory and its application. 19 Success stories John Gruhn Engineering Science* (Mining) I m employed full-time as a Graduate Mining Engineer at Ashton Coal Operations, specialising in Gas Drainage and Mine Ventilation. In addition, I have taken on a number of other roles and responsibilities, including contract management and mine scheduling work. My special area of interest, however, is underground mine ventilation and the effective design of gas drainage systems, looking also at end-use options for the methane gas extracted. As a mature-age student I cannot speak highly enough of my experiences at the University of Ballarat (now FedUni). In hindsight, moving to Ballarat from Newcastle (NSW) to study mining engineering on a full- time basis was one of the best decisions I ever made. The University provided an ideal, supportive environment for learning, and helped me gain the necessary real-world skills needed to secure a career in the coal mining industry. The program also incorporated core skills designed specifically to foster leadership qualities, critical thinking, communication and people-skills. Through the University s ties with the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AUSIMM), I was encouraged to apply for and succeeded in gaining a Rio Tinto Sponsored EEF Scholarship. I also gained the Alexander Prize for my work in Metallurgy last year. I would strongly encourage students to consider studying at FedUni above all other Universities, and especially steer them towards considering a career in mining... As a purely subjective, personal assessment, and giving due regard to my previous experiences as a student at other Australian Universities, I would award FedUni as overall winner in terms of providing the best learning experiences, in providing quality learning content and producing a sought-after graduates I basically secured employment before I even graduated. *Now the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mining) Clint Jenkins Engineering (Mining) I studied Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) even though I had never experienced the mining industry, nor had anyone I knew. For anyone in a similar situation, I would strongly recommend getting as much information as you can and giving it a go! So far throughout my graduate program, I have experienced a number of interesting and worthwhile roles ranging from planning engineer to shotfirer truck driver. I have had a good balance between office based and in-pit based jobs.
