2 PRE-CONFERENCE EVENT: JOSEPHINUM Wednesday, November 13th, 2013 Währinger Straße 25, 1090 Vienna 19:00-19:45 - Guided tour through the museum 19:45 - Reception On the eve before the conference a guided tour through the Josephinum Museum takes place, which is co-organized by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). The Josephinum was founded by Emperor Joseph II as a medico-surgical military academy and is the most prominent example of neo-classical architecture in Vienna and an important legacy of the Age of Enlightenment in Austria. In connection with the Vienna General Hospital and the nearby mental hospital»narrenturm«, this entity of important medical and scientific institutions, all created within Joseph s II short reign of ten years, formed an important structural development still defining Vienna s urban landscape today. The Josephinum houses the world-renowned collection of nearly 1,200 anatomical wax models commissioned by Joseph II in Florence for the newly established academy, the historical library with scripts and volumes from the 15th to the 18th century, as well as numerous additional collections of the Medical University of Vienna documenting the history of medicine and the great contribution of the Vienna School of Medicine. The Josephinum is the historical gateway to the Medical University of Vienna and remains to date an important place for teaching, research and the exchange of ideas. 3 REGISTRATION AND NAME BADGES Upon arrival at the conference venue you will be asked to sign the participants list and receive your conference materials together with a name badge. Please make sure to wear your name badge openly visible at any time. Otherwise entrance to the venue will not be granted. HOTELS We pre-booked a contingent in hotels close to the conference venue. 4 TRAVELLING AROUND VIENNA The best way to get around Vienna is to use the city s public transport network, which comprises five underground lines, 28 tram lines and 90 bus routes. Single tickets are 2 ( 2,20 if bought in the means of transport). They can be used for any single trip within Vienna. You may change lines, but you may not interrupt your journey. Travel cards are available for 24, 48 or 72 hours and are valid throughout Vienna for exactly 24 ( 6,70), 48 ( 11,70) or 72 ( 14,50) hours from the time they are punched. Available in the Vienna Transport Authority s ticket offices, tobacconists and ticket machines. The Vienna Card is the ideal entrance ticket to the city: a 72-hour ( 19,90) ticket valid on all means of transport and additional discounts and benefits at museums and sights, theatres and concerts, in shops, cafés, restaurants, etc. It comes with a comprehensive information brochure. Available in hotels and at the tourist information centre on Albertinaplatz (open daily from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm) and the tourist information point at the airport (open daily from 6.00 am to pm), at sales and information points of the Vienna Lines (e.g. Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz, Westbahnhof, Landstraße/Wien Mitte). BANKING Bank hours are Monday Wednesday, Friday: 8 am 12:30pm, 1.30 pm to 3 pm Thursday 8 am 12:30pm, 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm The Euro (sign:, code: EUR) is the official currency in Austria. Money can be changed at the airport, at banks, exchange bureaus, and larger hotels. Cash dispensers/ ATMs (Bankomat) are available all over the city. SHOPPING Typical shopping hours are Monday to Friday 9 am 6 pm and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. Apart from some tobacconists and small supermarkets at petrol stations and at the main railway stations, shops are closed on Sundays. Luxury shops with an elegant clientele can be found in the pedestrian zone of the Graben, Kohlmarkt and of Kärtnerstraße (underground U1, U3/ station Stephansplatz). A well-known shopping area is Mariahilferstraße (underground U3/ station Neubaugasse).

5 CLIMATE Weather in November is usually cold, average of 4 8 C. However, there may also be the possibility of snow. Thus, warm clothes are useful. ELECTRICITY The electrical current is 230 volts, 50 Hz. VIENNESE CHRISTMAS MARKET On 16 November 2013 the Advent season will descend upon Vienna again. The aromas of candied fruits, cotton candy and other delicacies wafting around the small wooden market stalls still retain their magical power. While children warm their hands on paper bags containing hot chestnuts, parents can sip their mulled wine and admire the way that the Christmas market has managed to keep its childhood fascination.
