1 CTI AT A GLANCE Monthly Newsletter of the College of Technological Innovation Faculty Affairs Committee Chair Message Welcome from the Faculty Affairs Committee team. It is our privilege to support the faculty of the College of Technological Innovation. The Committee oversees faculty concerns regarding issues of interest related to faculty professional development, research, faculty morale, salary compression issues, faculty evaluation policies and implementation, faculty recruitment and retention, or any faculty policy changes. Some of the concerns that were raised last year were: educational allowance, PD, and free/subsidized tuition to dependents and spouses at the undergraduate level at ZU. These issues were raised to the University s Faculty Affairs Standing Committee. We welcome your input. 2 New To CTI Abeer AlHasan is an Adjunct Instructor in the College of Technological Innovation at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi. She will teach "Management Information System". She received her Master Degree in Engineering Management from University of Jordan, Jordan, in 2008 and a Bachelor Degree in Computer Information System from Applied Science University, Jordan, in Her areas of interest include quality management, problem solving tools and methodologies, project management, total quality management, quality process analyst, ISO implementation, quality auditing and management information system. Abeer is a member of ASQ American Society for Quality and gained a certification in QPA and TQM. Besides executing many system analysis projects, she has experience in implementing quality standard projects. Asmaa Seyam has recently joined the College of Technological Innovation at Zayed University as an Adjunct Instructor. She is teaching the CIT245 Web Development Course. She received her MSc in Computer Engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. Her thesis topic focused on the utilization of wireless sensor networks by enhancing the sensing coverage and reducing the communication cost, and she has published two papers regarding this topic. The first was published in IEEE and the second was accepted the in Wireless and Technology Journal. Haseena Al Katheeri is a new adjunct instructor who is HCI and IT in Global and Local Cultures. She has been an ICT teacher for 10 years. She earned her Master degree in Cyber Security from ZU, her MIS degree from the UAE University and she has an Education Diploma from ECAE. Haseena is planning to pursue her PhD degree in information security field. She has extensive experience in supervising trainees and is interested in security and IT management as well as teaching ICT. Hello! I am Saiqa Aleem! I joined Zayed University in September 2012 as an Adjunct Instructor in the College of Technological Innovation. I am teaching Networks & Telecommunications and Communications Network I. I hold Master s Degree in Computer Sciences and also I am a Microsoft, Cisco CCNA and CompTiA Certified Professional. I have five years of Industrial experience as a Networking Administrator and also taught various courses in Canada. Currently, I am enrolled in a PhD Program and involved in research activities. I also published research papers on Cloud computing and E-government topics. I received scholarships for my Masters and PhD programs. Working with Zayed University has been a marvelous experience so far. It s a great learning and encouraging environment. Thanks to all my wonderful students and colleagues! We welcome you to CTI and wish you a very productive and exciting academic year.

3 CTI News COL270 Version 2.0 Dr. Chris Stryker from University College delivered a talk on Sept. 20 th to outline the new version of the COL 270 (Introduction to IT) course that is being implemented this semester. This course can have a profound effect on pre-major students and thus influence their decision whether to major in IT. Chris is anticipating that the new COL 270 will inspire students to consider majoring in IT. He emphasized that COL270 is not a computer science course, nor hardware course. It doesn t teach programming or ICDL applications to the students. It is actually a transformational course in every ZU student s academic experience. He stated that it is an enjoyable and memorable course that can be a reference standard for quality and innovation in content, technique and evaluation. Chris made it clear that COL270 prepares students to understand what IT is and how it is influencing our world and lives. It prepares them to work with technology productively, wisely and creatively and to continue to learn new IT skills. UAE Armed Forces meet with the IEEE Student Branch Dr. Manar Abu Talib, the branch counselor, succeed in getting external collaborators for the IEEE Student Branch such as the UAE Armed Forces, Microsoft, ADSIC and Abu Dhabi Municipality. The first meeting was held with the UAE Armed Forces on September 11 th The 2 nd Undergraduate Intercollegiate Cyber Defense Competition The College of the Technological Innovation will organize the 2nd annual Undergraduate Intercollegiate Cyber Defense Competition (UICDC 12). The one-day competition is planned to take place on Dec 1st,2012. Many Universities will participate. The list includes ZU (AUH,DXB), Khalifa University (Sharjah), Sharjah University (Sharjah), UAEU (Al Ain), HCT (Men and Women, Dubai), Manipal University (Dubai), AUD (Dubai), University of Dubai ( Dubai), Ajman University of Science and Technology ( Ajman), AUE (American University in Emirates, Dubai). The event will be sponsored by the EC-Council and Spectrum FZ. Both companies are leaders in providing technology and training in Network, Information Security and Ethical Hacking. The participants will be provided with multiple training workshops taking place on Saturdays. The competition steering committee is Dr. Mario Guimaraes, Dr. Huwida Said, Dr. May El Barachi, Mr. Nagarajan Chandrashekaran,, and Ms. Mona Bader. The committee would like to thank the Dean of the College, Dr. Leon Jololian, for his support. Dr. Ibrahim Baggili and Dr. Andrew Marrington hosted training for some government employees with Advanced German Technologies (AGT) for EnCase I and II in Abu Dhabi with Mona'sand Izzeddin s help. Soon they will host more training courses at CTI College Dubai with AGT. Dr. Ibrahim Baggili might be launching a portal with the MSIT students called 2mn (Amn), which means security in Arabic. An Experience from an Outcome- Based University, accepted for publication in the International Journal of Arts & Sciences (IJAS) Conference, May 28-31, 2013, Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. Manar Abu Talib published two papers in the 38th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2012), Montreal, Canada. They are titled Using ISO in Teaching Information Security and Towards Reliable Web Applications: ISO Dr. Munir Majdalawieh had his paper Outsourcing the Internal Audit Activities: An Empirical Study of Practices in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) accepted in Internal Auditing Journal. Dr. Zakaria Maamar delivered a seminar: Cloud 2.0 : Opportunities and Challenges in Ankabut Users' Meeting on September 18 th Dr. Maamar pointed out that cloud computing capitalizes on the widespread availability and use of Internet technologies to offer innovative solutions to today s organizations. He explained that it is usually shaped into three models: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). He said: Cloud 2.0 (or social cloud) is the blend of social computing with cloud computing. Existing initiatives look into this blend from the perspective of deploying social applications on the cloud. Our vision of Cloud 2.0 is different since we envisage a social network whose members are clouds that engage in different relationships like collaboration and competition to better respond to organizations needs and expectations. Dr. Maamar concluded that the potential socialization of separate clouds means establishing long-lasting relationships between these clouds, which will give organizations access to a space of unlimited computation and storage resources. 5 Faculty News Dr. Nermine Mahmoud is conducting a research on how to use Swarm Intelligence in the communication of Information Retrieval Mobile Agents while routing in a network to perform a given task. The Mobile Agents will communicate together during their trip through a network to notify each other about the data found and collected; to ensure the uniqueness of the data; and the nodes visited; so, as not to revisit the same node more than once. The Mobile Agent then, accomplishes the given task accurately and more quickly. Swarm intelligence is the collective behavior of decentralized, self-organized systems. When social insects, birds or fish work together, their teamwork is largely selforganized. Coordination arises from the different interactions among individuals in the colony or swarm. Although these interactions might be primitive, together they result in efficient solutions to difficult problems (such as finding the shortest route to a food source among myriad possible paths). The collective behavior that emerges from a group of social insects is what is called swarm Intelligence. Swarm Intelligence ensures flexibility; where the group can quickly adapt to a changing environment s, robustness. Even when one or more individuals fail, the group can still perform its tasks and self-organization; the group needs relatively little supervision or top-down control.
