1 The Governance Institute s Physician Leadership Program The Broadmoor Colorado Springs, Colorado September 11 13, 2016 A service of

2 September 2016 Physician Leadership Program This leadership program is designed to strengthen the skills and knowledge of physicians who are engaged in medical staff, group practice, and performance management activities with hospital/health system practitioners. It will also familiarize participants with the growing roles of physicians in the governance of healthcare organizations, including employed group practices and ACOs. This will be an interactive program that will engage audience members through discussion of case scenarios and common problems facing physician leaders. Topics will include medical staff redesign for greater effectiveness; strategies for engaging physicians in hospital and health system initiatives; addressing problematic physician clinical performance; raising the institutional bar for quality; and clarification of the role of physicians in various governance structures. This program is appropriate for physicians aspiring to leadership positions, physicians serving as medical staff officers or department chairs, service line medical directors, VPMAs and CMOs, and hospital/system and group practice board members. The program may also be of interest to hospital administrators (especially those responsible for professional affairs), non-physician board members, and legal counsels. The program is $495 for members of The Governance Institute and $595 for non-members. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this program, attendees will be able to: Articulate how roles for physician leadership are expanding and growing in importance and how the historic organized medical staff is adapting to a rapidly evolving new healthcare paradigm and changing professional demographics. Describe the role of physicians in the governance of hospital and group practice organizations and relate the key fiduciary roles and responsibilities of physician board members. Enumerate contemporary best practices for engaging practitioners in hospital and health system initiatives and motivating physicians to support institutional strategies. Outline good practices to engage physicians in the improvement of patient safety and the quality of care. Describe approaches to the management of colleagues who demonstrate unprofessional conduct, clinical incompetence, and/or significant opportunities for improvement. This session will review new roles for physician leaders and their expanding portfolios, examine the skill sets necessary to succeed in these roles, and look at how medical staff organizations are adapting in response to changing physician demographics and to stay relevant in an age of integrated delivery systems. We will also explore how health systems are bringing together and reorganizing physician leadership roles as they develop among traditional medical staffs, ACOs and CINs, employed physician groups, private medical practices, and in the ranks of hospital physician executives. 2:00 4:00 p.m. Managing Challenging Colleagues: A Core Competency for Physician Leaders This session will review the attributes of effective clinical leaders and what skills are essential to influencing colleagues (i.e., emotional intelligence, conflict management, clinical stature, etc.). We will then look at the ways in which colleagues pose problems for physician leaders and enumerate best practices to manage them. Some of the problems to be addressed include: unprofessional conduct, clinical incompetence, and passive-aggressive response to physician directed initiatives. In this part of the program we will explore the toolbox of interventions that can be considered to work with colleagues to improve their quality, address disruptive behavior, and move them to more cost-effective care. 4 Conference Program continued Monday // september Tuesday // september 9:45 10:45 a.m. The New Math of Healthcare: Simple Rules that Connect Strategy & Physicians The current and future healthcare landscape requires sound strategy, evolution of care, and reconnection with essential stakeholders. Physicians are essential participants, authors, or antagonists to this evolution. This session reviews how to invite, mobilize, and unleash physicians as drivers of strategy and commitment in your organization. 1:00 2:30 p.m. How to Engage Physicians around a Shared Mission Even when healthcare strategy and physician commitment are aligned, mobilizing physicians in their daily activity to drive and resonate around shared mission is essential for strategic success, operational vigor, and cultural vibrancy. This session reviews how to support your clinical microsystems so that physician engagement is not a task or initiative, but an abundant resource that powers your mission. 11:00 11:30 a.m. Physician Participation in Governance/Governance of Physician Organizations President The Reinertsen Group This session will clarify the roles and responsibilities of physicians when serving on the governing body of hospitals and physician organizations. The unique challenges of the practitioner as board member will be discussed. 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. How Safe Is Your Hospital? Really? This presentation will include discussion of a case study designed to teach a new framework for measuring and monitoring safety. It will cover how to use leading indicators to assess the safety of an institution, assess the reliability of key safety processes, and evaluate the effectiveness of anticipating and preparing for future safety risks. 5 Conference Program continued Tuesday // september Tuesday // september 1:00 2:30 p.m. Making the Safety Case for New Technology: Moving beyond the ROI Equation This session will use a case scenario and group discussion to examine the roles of various physician leaders in making determinations of when, why, and where new technologies will be purchased and deployed, how to measure the real value brought by such investments, how to navigate the inevitable politics to arrive at the right decision, and how to assure the technology will be utilized competently by an appropriately credentialed practitioner. To register for this conference, visit GovernanceInstitute.com/SeptPL 2:45 4:00 p.m. Addressing Competency & Patient Safety across the Continuum of Care: Reconciling Input from Inpatient & Outpatient Practitioner Performance Measures This final session will again use a case scenario to look at the implications of limiting inpatient privileges based on office practice performance. We will discuss the need of integrated healthcare systems to have effective performance monitoring in all settings across the continuum of care and what such monitoring might look like. The discussion will also include how the information obtained through use of outpatient indicators should be utilized in granting or restricting clinical privileges. 4:00 p.m. Adjourn

Continuing Education Credits Available Joint Accreditation: The Governance Institute, a service of National Research Corporation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. The Governance Institute designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ACHE: The Governance Institute is authorized to award 10.5 hours of pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education credit (non-ache) for this program toward advancement, or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program wishing to have the continuing education hours applied toward ACHE Qualified Education credit should indicate their attendance when submitting application to the American College of Healthcare Executives for advancement or recertification.
