2 Welcome to summer at the All classes are open to the community and take place on the FPD campus at 5671 Calvin Drive, Macon, GA Register online for all camps at Questions: Call , ext. 182 or LEARNeducational programs Reading and Writing Shake, Rattle, Read, and Write For boys and girls rising in grades K - 2 We will fall in love with writing through engaging hands-on activities, observations, and experiments as we use the curiosity God naturally gives us. We will explore books through Reader s Theater performances and have fun creating character costume pieces. Instructor: Wade Putnal, Lower School Principal Dates: July (Monday - Thursday) Location: FPD Elementary Multi-Purpose Room Eloise Adventures For girls rising in grades 1 4 Come and join the fun as we celebrate Kay Thompson s beloved book, Eloise. Girls will have tea parties and slumber parties all while reading, writing and illustrating about what it might be like to live in the beautiful Plaza Hotel. Instructor: Cindy Kross, Former FPD Elementary Teacher Time: 9 a.m p.m Location: FPD Elementary Classroom, TBA, includes book The World of Harry Potter For boys and girls rising in grades 2-8 Center for Discovery Science, Math & Technology Wild About Math! For boys and girls rising in grades 1-4 Get crazy with math through goofy games and awesome experiences. Each day we ll play games that are so wild and fun, you won t even realize you are learning. We ll send marshmallows flying, crack secret codes, make glow in the dark geometric shapes, and race against time. We ll also play fun games with partners to sharpen our math skills. Instructor: Melissa Brown, FPD 5th Grade Teacher Dates: July A Galaxy Far, Far Away For boys and girls ages 6 and older We ll explore the science and engineering behind Star Wars with LEGO bricks! From spaceships to speeders and droids to alien life, each day will feature a different science or engineering lesson followed by a mechanized or motorized Technic model of the day. Instructors: Bricks4Kidz Instructors Cost: $140 Kool Kids Coding Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 2-4 Begin the week with a choosing ceremony and continue the Harry Potter fun by creating crests and drinking butter beer. The week will also include house competitions and crafts as well as acting out different scenes from the Harry Potter books. Friday will conclude with awarding the House Cup. Instructors: Kathleen Gettmann, FPD Media Specialist, and Holly Scott, FPD Community Service Director Dates: June Time: 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. Location: FPD Media Center If you like to be in charge and if you like to play computer games, then you are ready to join the Kool Kids Coding Camp. We will introduce the exciting world of computer coding through creative games and play. We may even have special guests both human and robot! who can teach us all about this exciting world of technology. 3 Summer Discovery A variety of classes that are so much fun, you won t even realize you are learning something new! EV3 Robotics Camp: All About Sports For boys and girls ages 9 and older Challenge others to a game of basketball or soccer after building models and creating the software programs to control them. Put your technology skills to the test when you create the software programs for each model and watch them perform! Instructor: Tom Birmingham, Bricks4Kidz Instructor Dates: July Cost: $195 EV3 Robotics Camp: Contraption Concepts For boys and girls ages 9 and older Experience cutting edge technology with the introduction of LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Robotics. Students will be captivated as they incorporate the newest generation of motors, sensors and software by programming their commands. Instructor: Tom Birmingham, Bricks4Kidz Instructor Dates: August 1-5 Cost: $195 Stop Motion Movie Making Camp For boys and girls ages 9 and older In this unique and creative camp, students will plan, script, stage, shoot, and produce their own mini-movie using Stop Motion Animation. Use LEGO bricks to tell a story, complete with music, special effects and all your favorite LEGO mini- figure characters! Instructor: Brick4Kidz Instructors Cost: $175 Sandcastles and Sailboats For boys and girls rising in grades PreK - 1 Explore the ocean through art, literature, and language. We will use centers to strengthen gross and fine motor skills as well as reinforce skills used in PreK, Kindergarten and 1st Grade. Instructor: Dana Walker, FPD 3K Teacher Dates: June 27 - July 1 Location: FPD Kindergarten Classroom Once Upon a Time A Fairytale Adventure! For boys and girls rising in grades PreK - 1 Explore the classic fairy tales through art and language. Students will use their imagination while building language skills and strengthening fine and gross motor skills. Instructor: Dana Walker, FPD 3K Teacher Time: 9 a.m p.m Location: FPD Kindergarten Classroom Pirate and Princess Camp For boys and girls rising in grades PreK - 1 Pirate and Princess Camp will engage your little learner using centers to strengthen fine and gross motor skills as well as develop language and writing skills. It will be an exciting way to get back in the school routine. Instructor: Dana Walker, FPD 3K Teacher Dates: July Location: FPD Kindergarten Classroom Algebra Review For boys and girls rising in grades 6-8 Need extra math help in order to gear up for Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1? Come join us for a week of math centers and activities to get you ready for the year to come! Instructor: Carlie Hawkins, FPD Math Teacher
4 Laughter, Lockers, and Lunch For girls rising in grade 6 Join us for fun, food, and fellowship with other 6th grade girls. Reconnect with old friends and meet some new ones too! Learn ways to be organized for middle school using Outlook calendar and other organization apps for a successful year. Plus, get crafty and creative by making personalized locker decorations. Lunch provided. Boys Rock! For boys rising in grades 1-6 No girls allowed! This week will be filled with things boys love to do. With a different theme every day, we ll conduct messy science experiments and put a different twist on games you love such as relays with toilet paper, baseball with shaving cream, and tic tac toe as a team sport. Instructor: Melissa Brown, FPD 5th Grade Teacher Dates: August 1-5 Location: FPD 5th Grade Classrooms Across the Street and Around the World: Caring for Others in our Global Community For boys and girls rising in grades 1-6 You can make a difference in your community! Do you have a big heart for others? Spend an active week completing mission projects. We ll make cards for orphans in Mexico, write letters to soldiers overseas, and pack food bags for the Backpack Ministry for local hungry children. We will also serve at some local nonprofit agencies. Instructors: Holly Scott, FPD Community Service Director and Kathleen Gettmann, FPD Media Specialist Dates: June 27 - July 1 Time: 9:30 a.m p.m. Location: FPD Media Center Happy Paws and Wet Noses Pet Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 4-7 Be the best pet owner ever! Campers will learn about pet care, training, grooming, and of course, playing. We will explore rescue shelters, service dog organizations, meet therapy dogs, and learn how to be a good pet sitter. Special guests may include a veterinarian, wildlife biologist and animal rescue personnel. Instructor: Laurie Colter, FPD Elementary Teacher and dog lover Dates: June Time: 9:30 am - 12 p.m. Location: FPD Elementary Classroom, TBA Instructor: Kelly Bullington, Instructional Support Teacher and Carol Sawyer, 6th Grade Teacher Date: August 4 Time: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Cost: $40 CREATE Dance Hip Hop Dance Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 3-8 art & creative programs This camp will teach beginning hip hop skills and combinations in a relaxed and fun environment, whether students have done hip hop before or not. Campers will be split by age and/or skill if needed. Instructor: Lydia Gray, FPD Head Dance Coach Location: FPD Clark Fine Arts Center Lobby Mini Majorette Camp For girls rising in grades 3-8 This camp will teach basic baton twirling skills and combinations. Campers will be split by age/ability as needed. A baton will be provided, but parents will need to provide a measurement from the camper s shoulder to finger tips. 5 Mini Dance Camp For girls rising in grades 3K - 6 This camp will teach many forms of dance in a fun and relaxed environment. Styles include pom, jazz, lyrical, kick, line dances, prop-based dances and hip hop. Older campers may even be able to learn some beginning basic flag moves. Instructor: Lydia Gray, FPD Head Dance Coach Location: FPD Clark Fine Arts Center Lobby Summer Art Calling ALL Artists! For boys and girls rising in grades K 4 Calling all artists to come create! We will try some crazy techniques to produce some AMAZING pieces. We will get dirty and have lots of fun doing so. Various mediums will be used. We also will go to the playground and eat lunch together. All campers should bring a lunch with them each day. Instructors: Nancy Butler, FPD High School Art Teacher, and Mary Bennet Rose, Summer Art Camp Assistant Dates: June Time: 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Location: FPD High School Art Room Cost: $140 Girls Rule! Art Camp For girls rising in grades 3-5 This girls only camp will use a variety of materials to allow these artists to express themselves. We will listen to music, discuss techniques, and just have some great girl time. We also will go to the playground and eat lunch together. All campers should bring a lunch with them each day. This camp provides not only a great art experience but also a no drama zone. Instructors: Nancy Butler, FPD High School Art Teacher, and Mary Bennet Rose, Summer Art Camp Assistant Dates: June Time: 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Location: FPD High School Art Room Cost: $140 Cooking & Baking Junior Chef Baking Bootcamp For boys and girls rising in grades 1-8 Get messy in the kitchen while learning about measuring, mixing and basic food science in order to bake tasty sweet treats to take home every day. Instructor: Kathleen Gettmann, FPD Media Specialist Dates: June Time: 9:30 a.m p.m. Location: FPD Campus, TBA Junior Chef Passport Around the World For boys and girls rising in grades 1-8 Savor the flavors of Italy, France, Mexico, China, and India as we create dishes from a different country each day. Explore multicultural flavors and cuisines while learning all about food customs. Instructor: Kathleen Gettmann, FPD Media Specialist Dates: June 27 - July 1 Time: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Location: FPD Campus, TBA Crafty Creations Pinterest Crafts For boys and girls rising in grades 3-12 Come have fun and get crafty with great ideas from Pinterest. All supplies included in session fees. Make a wooden monogrammed sign, custom Sharpie coffee mug, Mason Jar lantern, and a wall tapestry. Instructors: Sarah Futo and Chelsea Latimer, FPD Middle School Teachers Dates: June 27 - June 30 (Monday - Thursday) Time: 10 a.m p.m. Location: FPD Campus, TBA Cost: $120 Sew Much Fun Session 1: For students rising in grades 3-5 Session 2: For students in Middle School and High School Sewing is so much fun! Third through fifth grade campers will make a pillowcase, a pair of pajama pants, and a tote bag to take home at the end of the week. Middle school and high school students will make a pocket t-shirt, a pair of pajama pants, and an upholstered craft table. Sewing machines and all supplies will be provided. Spaces are limited. 6 PLAY athletic programs Viking Soccer Camp For boys and girls rising in grades PreK - 6 Learn the game of soccer in a challenging but fun environment. Receive soccer training through games and competitions while learning what it means to be a Christian athlete. All participants receive a t-shirt. Instructor: Josh Trieste, FPD Soccer Coach Dates: June (Monday-Thursday) Time: 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Location: FPD Soccer Field Cost: $95 Mini Cheerleading Camp or Competition Cheerleading Camp Mini Cheer: For girls rising in grades 3K - 6 Competition Cheer: For girls rising in grades 4-6 Learn the basics of cheerleading with the FPD JV and Varsity Cheerleading squads! We ll learn cheers, dances, and introductory stunting and tumbling. We ll also talk about what it means to be a cheerleader (for a team and in life!), play a lot of fun games, and have dress-up days throughout the week. Girls in 4th-6th grades may choose competition cheer or regular cheer camp. Instructors: Amy Kenney, Katie Kemper, and Jessica Murnan; FPD Cheerleading Coaches Dates: August 1-5 Location: FPD Middlebrooks Athletic Center Superstars Tennis Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 1-6 Campers will enjoy instruction designed to teach them the fundamentals of tennis. Games and drills will focus on learning proper techniques to hit a forehand, backhand, serves, and volleys. Campers will learn the basic rules of tennis and be exposed to a sport they can enjoy competitively or recreationally for the rest of their life! Instructor: Josh Farrell, FPD Tennis Coach Dates: June (Monday-Thursday) Location: FPD Tennis Courts Cost: $120 Vikings Baseball Camp For boys rising in grades 2-7 This camp favorite will focus on the fundamentals of throwing, catching, hitting, base running, and pitching in a fun and challenging environment. Each camp day will end in games. Instructors: Denny Bryant and Sy Jones, FPD Baseball Coaches Dates: May 31 - June 3 (Tuesday - Friday) Location: FPD Baseball Field Cost: $150 FPD Softball Camp For girls ages 6-13 This camp will include instruction on hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running. Specific instructions on all positions will also be included. Daily games will enable participants to practice the skills being taught. Campers will need to provide a bat, fielding glove, batting glove, softball pants, t-shirt, and water bottle. Instructor: Kristy Alvarez, FPD Softball Coach Dates: May 31 - June 3 (Tuesday - Friday) Location: FPD Softball Complex Lacrosse For boys rising in grades 3-6 Learn and improve on the basics of lacrosse play. The camp will focus on skill building, sportsmanship, and team building. Participants will learn catching, throwing, dodging, shooting, ground balls, face-off techniques, standard offensive formations and defense. 7 Wrestling For boys rising in grades 1-8 Learn the fundamentals of wrestling. Participants will be paired by weight and age. Come ready to work hard and learn one of the oldest and most competitive sports. Instructor: Brett Collier, FPD Wrestling Coach Dates: June (Monday-Thursday) Time: 9 a.m - 12 p.m. Location: FPD Zach Gym Elementary & Middle School Cross Country Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 3-8 Learn how to start a running program, how to eat to fuel your running needs, and how to enjoy running. Come ready to learn how to run your best and have lots of fun! Instructors: Holly Scott and Shane Hall, FPD Cross Country Coaches Dates: June (Monday-Thursday) Time: 9:30 a.m p.m. Location: FPD Cross Country Trail, Track, and Gym All Sports Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 3-5 If you are a multi-sport athlete, this is the camp for you! This exciting camp is designed for kids to learn the fundamentals of different sports while having fun competing. Instructor: Walker Middlebrooks, FPD Basketball, Track and Cross Country Coach Dates: June (Monday-Thursday) Time: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Location: FPD Athletic Facilities Elementary Basketball Camp For boys and girls rising in grades 3-5 Elementary basketball camp will focus on fundamental skill development for ball-handling, dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending. All participants will receive a t-shirt. Instructor: Walker Middlebrooks, FPD Basketball Coach Dates: June 6-9 (Monday-Thursday) Time: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Location: FPD Middlebrooks Athletic Center or Zach Gymnasium Middle School Girls Basketball Camp For girls rising in grades 6-8 Improve your fundamental basketball skills. Geared toward intermediate players, this camp will improve skills through practice drills and training. Instructor: Rennie Atkinson, Girls Basketball Coach Dates: June 6-9 (Monday-Thursday) Time: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Location: FPD Middlebrooks Athletic Center Summer Day Care FPD Summer Day Care provides a loving, enriching environment for students during the summer months. Located in the FPD Kindergarten Building, the Summer Day Care program is open to all enrolled FPD students in preschool through fifth grade and all non-fpd students during the weeks they are enrolled in a Center for Discovery Summer Camp. Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Start Date: Thursday, May 26 for currently enrolled FPD students and Tuesday, May 31 for students not currently enrolled. Students are grouped by age and participate in crafts, outdoor activities, reading and games. Day Care staff will escort students to and from Center for Discovery Summer Camps as needed. 8 College & Career Prep For Teens & Young Adults YouScience: Discover Your Aptitudes, Strengths, and Best-Fit Career Path For students and young adults, years old Using the YouScience platform, participants will complete brain-game assessments to help unlock a deeper understanding of their natural abilities, specific interests and career opportunities. Students will also learn how to describe themselves in interviews and write cover letters. Visit for a detailed look at the YouScience platform. Geared toward new SAT test-takers, this class will go over each section. We will also cover how to register, what tests look like and other helpful information for SAT test takers. The preparatory class will greatly increase a student s opportunity for a higher score on the SAT. Contact the Center for Discovery office at , ext. 182 for more details. Admission: Admissions is offered to any student or adult who meets the eligibility requirements of the camp or activity. The Center for Discovery and First Presbyterian Day School welcome any student or adult regardless of race, color, religion, or ethnic origin who meets the standard of the activity. All camps and classes are taught from a Christian world view. Registration: Registration is required for any camp/class offering. Session are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please enroll early. Any registrations that have been received after a class has reached capacity will be returned with a full refund. Online registration is available on our website at Payment and Fees: Class fees are due in full at the time of registration. All fees include all activities and supplies unless otherwise noted. Payments may be made by check or FPD students may apply the payment to their student account. FPD accounts will be billed upon registration, not during the month of the class. Class Minimum Policy: Some classes have participant minimums set by the instructor. If the minimum is not reached the Wednesday prior to the beginning of the camp, the camp will be cancelled. Participants will be notified by and payments refunded. Refund Policy: A full refund is offered to the participant if the camp/class is full or if the camp/class is cancelled. Except in cases of an emergency that is disclosed to the Center for Discovery prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given five business days prior to the beginning of the class or once the class has begun. Departure: Students should be picked up promptly at the end of each camp/class. For the safety of all participants, girls or boys left on campus before or after the class will be escorted to Summer Day Care. Attendance: The Center for Discovery will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance. NO refunds will be given for students who choose not to attend camps, activities, or classes. Behavior: The Center for Discovery and First Presbyterian Day School reserve the right to dismiss any student whose behavior poses a discipline problem. No refunds will be issued for any student who is asked to withdraw. Personal Items: The Center for Discovery and First Presbyterian Day School are not responsible for lost or stolen property. Students should not bring valuable items. All personal items should be clearly marked with the student s name. Photography: By agreeing to the terms and conditions of enrollment, parents or guardians give permission for their child to be photographed or videoed for FPD and/or FPD s Center for Discovery publications or public relation videos, advertisements, online social media, and/or the FPD website unless a request otherwise is submitted in writing or via to the Center for Discovery office.
