Enroll Online at Sessions: How to Enroll: The sessions are slightly different at each school and time of year - your student is welcome to attend any session, at any school, within their grade level. Go to or come to the SPEF Office and we ll help you enroll online. The SPEF Office is located at 1020 El Centro Street, Room 3, South Pasadena, CA Enroll By: Friday, February 26, 2016* *Except Robotics Academy - enroll by January 29, for an early February start. Which Classroom? We ll Classroom and Dates of sessions on February 27, Refund Policy: Pick-Up/Drop-Off: Daycare: Special Needs: You can cancel your enrollment with refund less $50 administration fee per session, until one week before enrollment closes, after this there are no refunds. All requests for refunds or changes must be submitted on the drop/change form (Form 4) available from the SPEF Office. Our refund policy is uniformly applied. If your student s session starts immediately after regular school dismissal, your student can go straight to their Afterschool classroom. If there is a gap of more than a few minutes, Parents/Guardians must supervise until the start of session. Students found without supervision between regular school dismissal and their afterschool session, will be dropped without refund. If your student goes to SPUSD Daycare, students should go there first, sign in, and then they will walk to their classroom. If you have another daycare provider, you ll need to arrange drop-off and pick-up needs with them. If your child has special needs and you would like them to participate in SPEF s Afterschool Program, please contact the SPEF office. Need more information? 2 ART & CRAFT SESSION DESCRIPTIONS ART & CRAFT About the session: Students will be supported in translating their ideas into works of art and craft: Stimulate and develop your child s creativity and imagination! Curriculum overview: Practice traditional art techniques in painting and drawing, and have fun working on craft projects using different media such as clay. We have new projects and lessons for returning students. Monterey Hills Elementary Friday 1:15 2:15pm (1-3) ART WORKSHOP About the session: Have fun doing art projects and help your student improve their fine-motor skills. Curriculum Overview: Strengthen the small muscles in the fingers and hand by creating items that require dexterity and manipulation of many different tools and materials. Make pom poms & pinchers, and many other fun projects! Marengo Elementary Tuesday 3:00 4:30pm (K-2) $155/session (1.5hrs) FUN WITH FOOD About the session: This class is designed to encourage healthy eating habits and a lifelong interest in food. Curriculum overview: Join Ms Abbie to create real Mr. Potato Heads, grape caterpillars, string cheese octopuses and edible necklaces. Nurturing children s interest in food at a young age will encourage healthy eating habits for life. Arroyo Vista Elementary Thursday 3:00 4:00pm (K-2) SEW MUCH FUN! About the session: Learn the basics of hand sewing and other fabric crafts in a fun, social environment. Curriculum overview: Get comfortable using a needle and thread while learning and practicing different stitches. Potential projects include sewing a pincushion, storage bag, purse or mini backpack, pillows, puppets and more. All materials included in fee. CHESS CLUB Monterey Hills Elementary Tuesday :00pm (2-4) CHESS CLUB About the session: Join the growing South Pasadena chess tradition! Chess Masters Melvin and team offer this popular chess club for all levels of students. The session is suitable for students with a range of skills as our instructors makes sure that everyone is challenged and receives the tuition needed for noticeable improvement. The sessions are aimed at both new and returning students. Students Grades 2-5 are invited! Curriculum Overview: Beginners will learn the pieces, playing strategies, how to read the chess board, and checkmate. More advanced students will continue to build their playing strategies, plus improve problem solving and critical thinking. Arroyo Vista Elementary Thursday 2:50-3:50pm (2-5) Monterey Hills Elementary Friday 1:15-2:15pm (2-5) SPORT, GAMES & MOVEMENT ZUMBA, GYM & SPORTS SKILLS About the session: This is a great session for students who want to try different sporting and fitness activities. Curriculum Overview: Ashley from My Gym is excited to bring this session to South Pasadena! Students will try a variety of sports, practice relays, do gymnastics, even a little Zumba, all the time building teamwork, and confidence! Arroyo Vista Elementary Wednesday 2:45 3:45pm (K-2) Marengo Elementary Friday 1:15 2:15pm (K-2) HIP HOP DANCE & MORE About the session: This is an excellent session for high energy kids who want to have fun dancing! Curriculum Overview: Instructors from Plaza Production I will teach students current dance steps in hip hop, jazz and tap. Students will improve stamina, and flexibility all while having a lot of fun! Monterey Hills Elementary Thursday :00pm (K-3)

3 SPORT, GAMES & MOVEMENT continued JEDI TRAINING CAMP About the session: The Force will be with you as you learn the way of the Padawan! Curriculum Overview: Play Ultimate Star Wars games, build Star Wars vehicles and go from Padawan to Jedi Knight in one session! You will play characters, learn to draw the Clone Wars cartoon characters, create your own Jedi uniform, and take home your very own Light Saber! Marengo Elementary Tuesday 3:00 4:00pm (2-5) $155/session Monterey Hills Elementary Wednesday 3:00 4:00pm (2-5) $155/session SOCCER TINY PROS About the session: Tiny Pros is great for students new to soccer and students who want to improve skills. Curriculum Overview: Brit-West Soccer Instructors will help develop techniques including dribbling, passing, turning and shooting. Students will use their new skills in small team scrimmages, increase game understanding and confidence. Run, jump, kick lots of goals and smile! Curriculum Overview: Breakthru Fitness Instructors have created fun workouts that educate students on how to be fit and move correctly. Using positive coaching methods, students will gain speed and strength, increase energy and mental focus, agility, quickness, flexibility and self-confidence. Monterey Hills Elementary Friday 1:15 2:15pm (2-5) TENNIS SCHOOL About the session: Balance, timing and feel are best learned when an athlete is young! Try tennis! Curriculum Overview: Our instructors from Arroyo Racquet club will teach your student many skills for playing tennis! Whether new to tennis or not, all students will find this session engaging and fun! Racquets will be supplied. Arroyo Vista Elementary Friday 1:15 2:30pm (1-5) $155/session YOGA POP About the session: This is a fun way for students to get active practice yoga. Curriculum Overview: Yoga Pop is a creative, fun yoga session that moves to popular Pop music. This session is for beginners to advanced students! Come learn challenging yoga moves and poses to the sounds of fun music. LANGUAGE Monterey Hills Elementary Wednesday 3:00 4:00pm (K-5) $145/session CHINESE CONVERSATION About the session: New and past students welcome! This session is ideal for students who are interested in practicing Chinese (Mandarin) conversation skills and developing an appreciation for Chinese culture. Curriculum Overview: Learn or refresh students counting skills, knowledge of symbols and key conversational phrases, through exploration of different aspects of Chinese culture music, art, food, and folk songs. Refresh skills plus learn new material! All materials included in fee. Curriculum Overview: This new program by Mad Science uses Lego bricks and customized builds designed with a Lego Certified Designer to teach students all about engineering in a fun and engaging way. 4 SCIENCE continued EGGHEAD DETECTIVES About the session: Join the Egghead Detective squad to solve the mystery of the stolen portrait! Curriculum Overview: Dust for finger-prints, decode secret messages, analyze DNA, and use real forensic science techniques to find the missing artwork. Science has never been so cool! Marengo Elementary Friday 1:15 2:15pm (K-3) $155/session MARINE BIOLOGY About the session: Explore the diversity of ocean life! Curriculum Overview: Learn about organisms in the hot deep sea vents, to the riches of tropical fish, to the astonishing varieties of arctic marine life. Dissect a shark, write with squid ink, learn about the largest environment on the planet, and more! All materials included in fee. Mad Science offers hands on, inquiry based science sessions in topics such as flight, motion, magnetism and more! Curriculum Overview: Burst into the lab with this high-energy session! Children will be stuck on science as they explore magnets, tape, glue, and all the things that bring us together. The pressure will be on as we uncover the science behind aerodynamics and the properties of air. Explore the energy of motion and learn how to make mechanical energy fun! To round out the session, build molecules with your very own Atomic Coins! All materials included in fee. Marengo Elementary Thursday 2:50 3:50pm (1-2) $155/session Arroyo Vista Elementary Friday 1:15 2:15pm (1-2) $155/session MUSIC & THEATRE ARTS UKULELE WITH MRS DIGBY About the session: Ukuleles are the perfect instrument for Elementary students to learn to play music! Curriculum Overview: Students will learn the basics of the instrument and practice songs arranged specifically for the ukulele. Students will learn fundamental music skills, like reading and writing music. For a fun way to practice skills, students will play music games. Experienced ukulele players are welcome and will have a great time learning new songs and composing. Marengo Elementary Wednesday 3:00 4:00pm (K-2) $145/session THEATRE ARTS About the session: Learn the basic components of theater and performance! Curriculum Overview: With student-instructor collaboration, students will write and perform their own original plays, or perform a condensed version of a classic story. Students confidence will be built as language and vocal skills are developed. Students will play theater games, learn stage craft, lighting, costume and set design! SPMS Monday 3:00 4:30pm (6-8) $155/session (1.5hrs) Marengo Elementary Thursday 3:00 4:30pm (3-5) $155/session (1.5hrs) PROGRAMMING & ANIMATION CODING About the session: Develop creativity, collaboration, logic and persistence all the skills of a computer scientist! Curriculum Overview: Create your own animations, programs and games with MIT s Scratch, Python, Sploder, and more! Computer programming helps with brain development, math skills, and logic and is tons of fun! Marengo Elementary Friday 1:15-2:15pm (2-5) $155/session SCRATCH COMPUTER ANIMATION About the session: Scratch is a program created by MIT s media lab. Use Scratch to create wild and crazy projects that mix art and interactivity, and ignite your imagination! Curriculum Overview: Have fun and work on your own small projects, such as your own animation, game, music or art. Learn scratch, plus reinforce a variety of complementary computer skills. 5 PROGRAMMING & ANIMATION continued SCULPTRIS 3D About the session: Learn 3-D computer sculpting with Sculptris. Curriculum Overview: Join Mr Pinedo on a journey into the world of computer sculpting and animation! We ll develop monsters and characters just like our favorite Movies and Video games. We ll learn uses for 3-D such as printing. This session is great for both introductory and return students and will help develop skills in Technology, Science and Art. All materials included in fee. ROBOTICS Monterey Hills Elementary Tuesday 3:00 4:00pm (2-5) $145/session LEGO ROBOTICS About the session: Build and program your own robots with Mr Hua and the Parker-Anderson Scientists! Curriculum Overview: Challenge aspects of your creativity and intellect while learning the basics of engineering and physics! Students are given new and different projects every week to build, test and modify. This session is as fun as it is inventive. All materials included in fee. Arroyo Vista Elementary Thursday 3:00 4:30pm (2-5) $155/session (1.5hrs) SPEF ROBOTICS ACADEMY About the session: Build and program your own robots at Robotics Academy! Curriculum Overview: Learn to build robots using Lego EV3 and KIPR Robotics kits. Learn code to program your robots using a modified version of C. We will use math and science skills, and develop leadership, team building, critical thinking and creative problem solving, as we work on competition level projects. Returning students will continue to focus on programming using new sensors and cameras. Students may choose to compete in Robotics tournaments, such as First Lego League and Botball. Additional fees may apply for tournaments. Sessions start early February.
