1 Electronic Mail ( ) POP Mail is that downloads and stores your messages on your computer. You install a mail client on your computer, which then connects to your ISP s mail server. Examples: Eudora (by Qualcomm) Outlook (by Microsoft), Mail (by Apple). Web Mail is mail that you get through a Web site. Mail is stored on the computers belonging to the Web provider, and typically not downloaded to your individual computer. Web mail examples: Yahoo.com, Gmail.com, Mac.com, Hotmail.com, Fastmail.com IMAP is protocol for accessing web mail, through a web client such as Outlook, without having to download mail to your computer Telnet or Shell Example: UALR s former 1 Internet address Here s the different parts of an address such as president@whitehouse.gov username or at sign domain name user ID (may be longer) sign and domain name can be omitted if you re sending to a user with that domain name. 2 1

2 Passwords Your Password provides SECURITY. Bad Passwords: - Your username or a variation of your name. If your username is sbsmith13, then sbsmith13 is a bad password - A word or words that can be found in a dictionary Good Passwords: - misspelled words; 2 words; word and numbers - example: Yallerkar, luv2dawgs, kiddokar1 Changing your password: - Go to Boss.UALR.Edu - Or in Mail.UALR.Edu, go to Settings-Account-Change Acct Settings 3 Folders, Labels and Filters Inbox shows messages that you haven t read Outbox or Sent Mail shows messages sent Draft Messages composed but not sent Other Folders Gmail uses Labels, not Folders Filters - automatically labels(or files) messages Archive - moves a message into All Mail, Delete - moves a message to the trash Move To - same as Label, then Archive Gmail help for the Inbox 4 2
