More than 200 Energy Valley Platform members, a strong link with companies, governments and knowledge institutions and over twenty founding partners certainly prove one thing: the network works. 4 Bio Based Energy Biomass contains many valuable substances that can be extracted by bio refining. This makes them available for use as raw materials in other sectors, such as the chemical industry. The residue can be used for generating energy. Bio energy is therefore an important facet of the Bio Based Economy. Given the strong agro-industry and agro-knowledge centred in the North, the Energy Valley foundation supports initiatives in this field and helps the positioning of bio energy in the sustainable energy mix. To bundle knowledge and various companies involved in this field, Energy Valley, set up the Dutch Torrefaction Association (DTA). This was later followed by the establishment of the European Torrefaction Association (EURTA). An important theme for Bio Based Energy is thermo-chemical conversion: separating out the biomass constituents at high temperatures and pressure. An example of this is torrefaction, a process where biomass is roasted and thus maded suitable for generating energy. It is known as bio coal. Bio coal is a sustainable fuel, making it an excellent substitute for fossil coal. 6 7

5 Green Gas Roundabout The Netherlands is a true gas country. The country sits on top of the largest gas field in North-Western Europe, has a central position in the European gas grid and benefits from a wealth of business and knowledge regarding gas. The Netherlands forms the logistical hub or gas roundabout for the extraction, transport, storage and trade in gas throughout Europe. Energy Valley is focussed on utilising this unique gas position in the transition towards a sustainable energy supply. Gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, easy to store and can be used as a back-up if there isn t enough wind or sun to produce sufficient energy. exceptional promise is LNG: Liquefied Natural Gas. LNG is considerably cleaner than regular fossil fuels used in transport and is suitable for shipping and heavy road haulage. This benefits the environment in the North of the Netherlands, including shipping on the North Sea and Wadden Sea, and provides extensive employment in the business of adapting engines and infrastructure construction. It is also possible to produce green gas from biomass. The North of the Netherlands is the Dutch principal green gas region; a region that has made considerable investments into Green Gas Hubs, infrastructure, fermentation installations and the acquisition of knowledge. The Energy Valley foundation supports various research and production projects in order to lower cost prices, develop new market models and improve the production process. 6 Smart Decentralised Energy The development of smart energy systems smart grids creates new business for companies in the Energy Valley region, particularly for SME s. An increasing number of parties, both companies and private individuals, are getting involved in generating energy in a decentralised manner. The use of solar panels or high efficiency boilers are good examples. For the most part, power generated in this way is consumed by the producer, however any excess energy can also be loaded on to the grid to supply neighbouring end-users. This calls for smart routing systems, innovative methods of generation and new market models. Transition Parks and Energy dikes/energy from water. The business group New Energy Business Community has been established to help speed up developments in smart decentralised energy. In the North, several Smart Grid projects are under way, including PowerMatching City, VIOS, MeppelEnergie and ibalance. And more is happening in the field of smart energy systems: in the Energy Valley region for example, various pilot projects are being carried out with smart public lighting. There is also a lot of hard work being put into extending the roll out of solar/photovoltaic systems. Other significant themes being investigated include residual heat use, Energy 10 11

7 Power Production & Balancing The North of the Netherlands is a significant control point for the production and balancing of Europe s power supply with its ports, North Sea coastal location, power line terminal facilities, power stations and underground gas supplies. The development of wind farms at sea are a key element in the production of sustainable energy. Wind farms are currently being developed off the coast of the North of the Netherlands and Germany which can be serviced from the northern ports. This creates plenty of new jobs and generates business as well as energy. Gas is the perfect stand-by fuel to cover the occasions when less wind energy is being generated for North-West Europe due to a lack of wind. Gas fired power stations are highly flexible to address any imbalance. Gas also has an added advantage because it can be stored, ensuring there is always enough in reserve. This ensures that the region can guarantee supply, whilst delivering a trustworthy international energy system which is prepared for a rapid transition to sustainable energy provision

8 Knowledge & Internationalisation The Energy Academy Europe was officially launched in September 2012: a premier institute bundling research, education and innovation regarding energy. Working closely with the market, research is carried out to attain the knowledge required to stimulate innovation and energy transition, while simultaneously educating the energy experts of tomorrow. The part of the Energy Academy Europe concentrating on the intermediate vocational level is called the Energy College: a collaboration between the market, government bodies and intermediate level secondary schools in the region to educate the next generation of practical innovators. Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany and Norway. The status of Region of Excellence will enable it to apply for EU funding to empower a mutual effort towards speeding up energy transition. Energy is a subject which concerns every country. As a reflection of this, countries in North-West Europe have joined forces in launching various mutual projects to share knowledge and generate business. The objective of these collaborative projects is to become what the EU terms a Region of Excellence. This North Sea Region includes 14 15
